Day 5 of the Coroner's Inquiry of The Case of David Widjaja: The use of 120 Photos | Why almost all the blood stains belong to David?

If David Widjaja was the attacker, why the blood stains found in the Professor Chan Kap Luk's office MOSTLY belonged to David? I know some are wondering about it. So am I.

If I were the lawyer, I'd definitely raise the question about how strange it is that David was the one whose blood stains were found most in the office. Well, to be fair, Prof's blood was reported to be found on the floor near the computer table and (mixed with David's blood apparently during the alleged knife struggle?) on the blade.

Argh. I ought to buy Straits Times later today to get the full story!

PS. The use of 120 photos should actually be enough for David's parents to request for an open verdict. They & their lawyers surely would require more time to study the photos. Unless they were given the photos earlier--which the online article of Straits Times does not reveal.

Photographs - 120 in all - were used to paint a likely scenario of events which transpired between Nanyang Technological University student David Hartanto Widjaja and Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk on March 2 this year.

On that day, Mr Widjaja was found dead after falling four storeys from a link bridge on campus. Minutes before he was seen running from the office of Prof Chan, his final-year supervisor, after allegedly being in a knife struggle with him.

On the fifth day of the coroner's inquiry into Mr Widjaja's death, forensic scientist Lim Chin Chin told the court that her findings were based on the photographs, two visits to the campus in April and information given by the police.

Ms Lim, from the Forensic Chemistry and Physics Laboratory of the Health Sciences Authority, took the witness stand on Tuesday, along with Dr Christopher Syn, a senior forensic scientist who conducted a DNA examination of blood taken at the scene.

She said that almost all the blood stains left behind in Prof Chan's office belonged to Mr Widjaja - including some found on the wall above a computer monitor. Prof Chan had been seated near the computer when the alleged attack began.

These stains indicate the swing of an arm downwards from somewhere above the monitor where blood was either cast off from a wound or from a blood-stained object, she explained.

Dr Syn told the court on Monday that only Mr Widjaja's blood was found on the knife handle. He added that the blade, which broke off during the struggle, had a mixture of both Mr Widjaja's and Prof Chan's blood.

Ms Lim said that Prof Chan's blood was only detected on the floor near a computer table.

Blood from a partial palm print on some documents near the office's door were also found to be Mr Widjaja's.

Outside the room, blood trailed in two different directions. One was caused by Prof Chan while the other, more severe, was from Mr Widjaja.

From Straits Times, "Likely scenario through photos".

Update: So the hearing shall continue from 17 June to 19 June and from 24 June to 25 June. I don't know that.

Blood stains and items out of place indicate a possible struggle in Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk's office at the Nanyang Technological University.

These findings were given by the Health Sciences Authority's consultant forensic scientist, Lim Chin Chin, at the coroner's inquiry on Tuesday into the death of Indonesian student David Hartanto Widjaja.

Miss Lim had conducted a scene reconstruction report and found two trails of blood heading in different directions.

The first, which contained Prof Chan's DNA profile, started from the office, turned right at the door and stopped at the lift.

The second trail had David Widjaja's DNA profile. It turned left at the door, down two flights of stairs and up the parapet wall to the roof of the NTU link bridge.

21-year-old David Widjaja had allegedly stabbed Prof Chan before falling to his death on March 2 this year.

The inquiry will continue in June. The hearing will resume from June 17 to 19 and again from June 24 to 25.

From Channel NewsAsia, "2 blood trails going off in different directions found at NTU don's office".

Update: The following article has a new piece of information about how David's brother, William will will be called to the stand when the coroner’s inquiry resumes on June 17. Why William? Because he is David's brother & he might be sharing his insights about David's character.

It is still not known exactly when David Widjaja sustained the 19 cuts — 18 superficial and one deep on his right wrist — before he fell to his death on campus grounds at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on March 2.

But on the fifth day of the coroner’s inquiry into the 21-year-old’s death, Health Sciences Authority’s (HSA) forensic scientist, Ms Lim Chin Chin, told the court that investigators had recreated the incident by zooming in on the blood splatter patterns inside Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk’s office.

Blood cast-offs and impact patterns, which were found all over the office, all pointed to a violent struggle. Most of the blood found belonged to the Indonesian student, added Ms Lim.

Assoc Prof Chan’s blood was also found in a pool beside the computer table, suggesting he was on the floor when he was bleeding.

This scenario was based on 120 submitted photos taken at the crime scene, a report by lead investigator Station Inspector Soh Chee Eng, and Ms Lim’s own visits to the site last month.

During a lengthy testimony, Ms Lim told State Counsel Shahla Iqbal most of the blood stains were found in the inner portion where Assoc Prof Chan’s desk was situated.

Blood cast-offs are often formed when a blood-stained object is swung in any direction.

Before David was found dead, the final-year electrical and electronic engineering student had allegedy stabbed his professor at around 10.25am.

In his testimony last Thursday, Assoc Prof Chan said that moments into a conversation they were having about David’s final-year project, the professor felt “something knocking on (his) back area”.

When he swung around, he found David trying to attack him with an 18-cm long knife.

But could he have cut David during the struggle, asked the Widjaja family’s lawyer, Mr Shashi Nathan, during his cross-examination that day.

No, Assoc Prof Chan had replied then.

Yesterday, Ms Lim said blood drip trails — which were approximately 32.7m long — were found outside Assoc Prof Chan’s office.

One belonged to the professor, who was later found near a lift lobby in the building. The other trail led to the link bridge, where David, an Asean scholar, was said to have jumped from.

Drip patterns on the roof, which came from David’s wound, were undisturbed at the scene, indicating that there was no movement before he fell.

Blood stains were also found approximately 15.1m below the glass ledge.

Ms Lim added: “Quite a significant (amount of blood) was dripping (on the rooftop). If someone else sat in the area, the blood stains would have been disturbed”.

Earlier in the day, Mr Sashi also cross-examined Dr Christopher Syn, an HSA senior forensic scientist.

On Monday, Dr Syn had told the court that DNA tests collected from the scene showed that both David’s and Assoc Prof Chan’s blood were found on the blade of the knife used in a struggle between the two.

When asked if there could be other DNA profiles from the knife, Dr Syn said they did not test for other profiles.

More witnesses, including David’s brother, Mr William Widjaja, will be called to the stand when the coroner’s inquiry reconvenes on June 17.

From Today, "Most of the blood was David’s".
