It's a dog-eat-dog world island...literally
Sad to read about how more than 300 stray dogs that were dumped on isolated islands in Malaysia--like Pulau Tengah, Pulau Selat Kering and another undisclosed island--turned to cannibalism after weeks of starvation.
BBC News have covered the story in "'Dumped' dogs turn to cannibalism". And so have MSNBC in "Dogs dumped on island turn to cannibalism". (Yes, I now realize that it is NOT easy indeed to create a unique title for the articles which content are more or less the same.)
The Sun Daily in "Two more islands used to dump dogs from Pulau Ketam" has this terrible thing to report:The team saw several emaciated dogs hungrily feasting on the remains of another dog.
"They were fighting amongst each other for a small meal. The stronger dogs dominated, while weak dogs sat at a distance and watched helplessly.
"The dogs were starving and very skinny as they had not had proper food source for weeks."
The Malaysian Insider in "Outrage over Klang Council sanction in marooning strays" has this to say (Yes, even Malaysians are angry!):The capture and dumping of stray dogs from Pulau Ketam to other islands were sanctioned and funded by Klang Municipal Council and councillors.
A total of 312 dogs were captured and transported to several islands between February 27 and March 12 and the council allegedly paid for each capture while a councillor used his allocations to transport the dogs to the islands.
Selangor executive councillor Elizabeth Wong today told The Malaysian Insider she was outraged at the action of the council.
“I have received information that money came from the municipal council for each dog captured.”
Wong said she had brought the matter up with her executive council colleague Ronnie Liu who is in charge of local councils on Monday and had urged him to investigate the case.
She added that the islands off Pulau Ketam are reserves and the culprits had committed an offence in dumping the dogs there.
“They should be charged in court.” she said.
I agree. It's very cruel to dump those dogs out there. Apparently they could not survive on their own (the call of the wild are very much mute there, I guess. Anyway, not all dogs can be Buck.).
So if you ask me what would be the fitting punishment for the culprits? I'd say, let us dump the culprits on the same island with the poor dogs. I'm sure the latter will know how to welcome the two legged animals rightly. Right to the culprits' jugulars, I can imagine.
