SDP Chee Soon Juan vs Ambassador Chan Heng Chee: War of Words which takes place at Washington Post
The spark was started with an article at Washington Post, "The Best Guide for Gitmo? Look to Singapore". Written by William J. Dobson and published on 17 May 2009, the article has praises over how Singapore reform & rehabilitate terrorists:40 former terrorists, or roughly two-thirds of the detainees Singapore has arrested since 2001, have been rehabilitated and released. None appear to have returned to their violent past.
Soon the Singapore Democratic Party's Secretary General Chee Soon Juan writes a letter to Editor, "Don't Follow Singapore's Lead" which was published on 23 May 2009. In his letter, he made a very daring claim:Such a rehabilitation program has been so successful that there is no political opposition or civil society to speak of in Singapore. Of course, as in Guantanamo, rehabilitation in Singapore comes with beatings and other forms of torture. A few people have been reported to have died in Singapore's cells.
He'd better have his facts right because I never read about any death (concerning terrorist detainees) in any of the detainment center.
As expected, there is a reply--another letter to Editor, "Singapore's Treatment of Terrorists". It was published on 11 June 2009 & written by Singapore Ambassador to the United States Prof. Chan Heng Chee. In her letter, she refuted Chee's claim about the beatings, tortures and the deaths of the detainees. In addition Prof. Chan firmly stated:In the face of terrorist violence, a government's priority must always be to protect the lives of its people.
It's very interesting to read these 3 articles--especially as I have not found them reported in the local newspaper like Straits Times. Hallo, Straits Times? Don't you think this is news-worthy? Heh.
Update/correction: Thanks to "A new life in a new place". Yes, the ambassador is a lady. I knew I should have check out more about the ambassador, say from Wikipedia: HERE.
