Wellness Village Spa & Fitness outlets disappear? And to think that SIA Boarding Pass Privileges showcase the spa...

Wellness Village Spa & Fitness

SIA Boarding Pass Privileges: Wellness Village Spa & Fitness

Yes. SIA ought to relook at its Boarding Pass Privileges and immediately stop featuring Wellness Village Spa & Fitness.

CASE has received five complaints against Wellness Village Spa & Fitness since last year. Perhaps CASE might want to publish a newsletter about all the complaints received & distribute it to corporations (like SIA) for their information.

If only SIA knew about the complaints, I doubt Wellness Village Spa & Fitness will still be considered by SIA as part of its boarding pass privileges.

Okay, you may say that it's the duty of SIA to do its homework & check about the company. To be fair, if you go to CASE homepage, there is no a Search button or a link to the list of complaints & the companies involved.

For your kind consideration, CASE. On a positive note, I do like the Consumer Alerts section of the CASE website. Heh.

For over four years, it operated at the Pan Pacific Singapore hotel. But over the course of a day, the Wellness Village Spa left customers and the hotel in the lurch when it suddenly shut down, disconnecting its phone lines.

At its Pagoda Street outlet in Chinatown, the premises were empty, with the doors wide open when MediaCorp visited on Monday. Neighbouring shop owners said they saw movers shifting equipment and furniture on Sunday afternoon. In the quiet of the night, the same scene was seemingly repeated at the Pan Pacific outlet.

A nearby shop owner said the spa began retrenching workers last month. He noticed remaining staff packing up late last week, and believes that customers were told it was "fully booked" to keep them from coming down.

This was certainly the experience for one customer.

Ms Elaine Ong had been trying to make an appointment, but the spa kept telling her that it was fully booked.

The "first hint of trouble" came last Thursday when she called the Pan Pacific outlet and an employee told her only two therapists were being employed, said Ms Ong who is in her 30s.

As she has recently signed up for a $600 package, Ms Ong said she was a "bit alarmed".

At Pan Pacific on Monday, a hotel employee told guests the spa had closed without informing anyone. Dutch businessman Laros, 39, who had been peering through the spa's glass door, said the hotel's reception pointed him to the spa for a massage when he checked in.

The hotel told MediaCorp the spa "leases and operates the premises independently".

It "sincerely regrets any inconvenience experienced" and is now re-directing guests to nearby spa facilities. It will "continue to attempt" to contact Wellness Village Spa, it added.

Checks with the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority showed that Wellness Village was incoporated in June 2004 and is still a "live company". Permanent resident Lia Meyrina is listed as its director. MediaCorp could not reach the company.

Wellness Village Spa and Fitness, a limited liability partnership with Ms Lia and a Mr Christopher Tan Khee Howe listed as partners, was struck off in September. It was registered in 2007.

Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) executive director Seah Seng Choon was "not surprised" by the spa's actions.

"Don't be fooled by the location. Spas are generally small businesses, unless they have an international chain ... Consumers have to be careful when transacting with them," said Mr Seah.

Since last year, CASE has received five complaints, including unsatisfactory services and difficulty in scheduling sessions, against Wellness Village. Four were made this year, with the latest complaint in October. CASE is trying to contact the company.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Has Wellness Village Spa left its customers in the lurch?".

Not only has the director disappeared, just a few days ago, its manager Susan actually tried to con me into signing up for more packages even though I recently signed a 15 session package the week before. It was then that I smelt a rat. I hope the manager acted in good faith and in ignorance. Otherwise, I would say this amounts to a real case of cheating that really merits criminal charges.

I've signed a 50-sessions massage package since Feb 2008, but had only completed 25 sessions because they are always either "fully-booked" or "next month's schedule not out yet". Per time, I'll used up 4 sessions cos my hubby and 2 girls come along with me. We are supposed to have a session on 31st Oct, but was told last min that 2 staffs are on m.c., and had to re-scheduled the appointment to 27th Nov. They even tried asking us to purchase another 50 sessions, offering us half-price of what we're paying now even though we still have a balance of 25 sessions.

sigh...what can we do now?

A friend and I signed up for 20sessions in June 2008.... but only used 4 times... my friend even got a booking for facial later this month! Anyway, have filed a claim with Small Claim Tribunals. I have their company profile. Interested pp pls contact me... don't waste money on such company anymore. And no point going to CASE as the company has closed.. CASE can't help.

can you tell me how to go about filing claims?

river said...

Hi Just,
Go to Small Claim Tribunals website
http://app.subcourts.gov.sg/sct/index.asp

You would need to print out a copy of the form (small claim). Then fill up the form - photocopy 3 more copies.
Next, you would need a copy each of your receipt, IC and the company biz profile (give me your email, I will send it to you. otherwise you would have to purchase it from BIZnet.). Go to Small Claims at Sub-Court at Havelock Road. Get a register Q no.. and file it. You would need to pay $10 for it. You would be given a date for consultation. There is where you get your hearing. Hope this helps!

Hi all, I'm a victim too. I signed up for a 100-treatment package for 6K but have only paid up 4K so far. They never fail to ask me to pay the remainder after every session! My fiance and I have used less than 20 treatments ever since. Actually had a big dispute over poor service with them in April and asked for refund in Aug but the manager cleverly void the 2 treatments and gave me a gift to pacify me. Sigh.. if only i had gotten the refund! So angry! I cried over this quite a bit =_( Oh and River.. could u email me too? vonzz96@yahoo.co.uk Thanks loads!

Hi, there is a group of victims who have rallied themselves together. So far there are 80 names, and growing. Wellness Village has a clientele of 7,000 customers. Imagine the no. of people who are affected. If anyone is interested, I could give you the link and you can see the discussions pertaining to this scam. They are intending to lodge a police report together. I think it goes beyond the recovering of money. At the current moment, there are no regulators for this industry. When things go haywire, none of the authorities is able to handle. Someone here has mentioned that some of the regular customers of spas have other packages with different spas. How can we, as consumers, be assured that such things will not repeat itself again in a few months or few years time? It could happen to anyone of us now or future. We should have regulations or guidelines for this industry. Let me know if anyone is keen to be included in the victims group. My email is
xs2oasis@hotmail.com

I took the advice of one ex-therapist at the Pagoda Street to return back to the Pan Pac branch literally just two weeks ago; got my appointment booked by Susan (who last spoke with on 7 Nov was leaving for her maternity) for 14 Nov. Unfortunately, I was ignorant not to have suspected her lame excuses when requested for her Manager, Nicole to return my call for their regular cancellation of my appointment.

I am totally frustrated having being their customer since May 2007 - Susan you sold me the package and now you left me in the lurch - I bet you got some gain out of this whole saga since you're soon to be a mother and probably short of cash to pay your hospital bills!! While you be on maternity resting, I hope you 'rest in peace' (I pray you read this!!)

I hope the owner who's pocketed all the money from his / her over 7 K members, looses sleep and leaves through guilt for the rest of life - such a loser!!!!

xs2oasis - please could you email (harryjoe@asia.com) me more details to the rally? We should definitely lure the owner out to the general public for a good explanation!

i am very2 sad with this wellness village too. Can anybody included me in their 'class action' together?

my email is sentosa.gani@gmail.com

Lydia said...

xs2oasis - Yes I agreed to what you say. It's not a matter of taking back the money anymore because I think the chances are pretty slim... Rather, we should not let the Directors go "Scot-Free" like that, thinking that they could re-start another business in no-time, and start "conning" our money again. Pls give me the link and we can team up together. My email is jleelkoh@yahoo.com.sg

hi can someone send me the biz profilem for wellness village>? thanks in adv.

Hi, I'd love to be part of this too, would you keep me in the loop, please. My mum has signed a $700 pkg w Susan, I have told her to stop the transaction already. Just like you all, she has similar complains, and is trying to book today and realised they are uncontactable, too, did I try to search for them online and bump into your blog. I have never done this before, and my mum is probably depending on me to help her, thus kindly guide me through all these. My email add is mpsp85@yahoo.com.sg thanks for posting this blog too!

There will be a Registrar mediation group session 1 Dec 09 3pm at Subcourt. Anyone of your appointment date on that same day too? I hope Lia & Christopher (Directors of Wellness Spa) attend & not waste everybody's time. If not, i hope they get sued for fraud with joint forces from their clients so that a warrant of arrest can be issued to them.

Hi Amy - think your email add is wrong.. can't post to you the biz profile.

Hi Venus - is the hearing for everyone? My friend's hearing is on 3 Dec.

Hi all,
i had my consultation session yesterday..nothing change..no one from wellness turn up..it is a fruitless trip..to cut the story short..the Registrar merely registered the claim order and then explained that former letter will be sent to both parties and that wellness is given up to one mth from claim order date to pay up. Good new for those who had signed up with citibank for the instalment payment, your balance payment had been waived...but not for the rest of the banks...

Hi all, just to update on the wellness village saga...

Currently, 3 SPAs are helping to redeem our packages out of goodwill. They are Subtle Senses, Rustic Nirvana and Atos Wellness. You can call up the spa to make an appointment for your bailout. However, they will charge their ala carte prices when they deduct from your remaining package.

You can check out the news here:
