"I'll just smile. No comment".

Cute. That's the last quoted remark by one of the 'cowboy' in YouTube, "Cowboys in Paradise Bali". It's kind of opposite of the grim news about how the police on Bali caught 28 people as part of their manhunt, or gigolo hunt...whatever.

Police on Indonesia's resort island of Bali detained 28 people this week in a crackdown on "beach gigolos," who scout for foreign female tourists, officials said on Tuesday.

The raids began on Monday after the release of a trailer for a documentary on Bali's 'Kuta cowboys', the muscular and tanned Kuta beach surfers who develop short-term romantic relationships with foreign women in return for gifts.

'Cowboys in Paradise' follows the trials and tribulations of several beach boys, their families and their female patrons.

The documentary's Singapore-based director, Amit Virmani, said he found the arrests deplorable.

"A witch hunt for men with tanned and muscular bodies on the beach is the last thing anybody wants," he said.

"The film is about one small aspect of life in a holiday destination. It does not suggest that the cowboys are all that Bali has to offer."

Gede Wijaya, a spokesman for the local council area which includes Kuta beach, said that 28 people had been detained for not having proper identification or "for disturbing the peace or security of our beaches."

Wijaya said the raids were part of routine checks and not linked to the documentary, but local media reported that security officials were targeting tanned and muscular men.

"As has been reported, gigolos have indeed been rounded up," Putu Suardika, a spokesman for the governor of Bali, said in a telephone text message to Reuters. Virmani said he believed the beach gigolo phenomena was not unique to Bali, which is also known for its Hindu temples, volcanoes, and terraced rice fields.

"Moreover, the cowboys do not pose a threat to tourists. What happens between consenting adults is their own business," he said.

"I am genuinely worried for the safety of the people in the film and the boys on the beach."

Boat Quay - a shot of many colors

Just a shot taken at Boat Quay. Sigh. Love the colors. Love the ambience...

Shutter Island - give me the book, please!

Shutter Island - The Movie

Shutter Island - The Book

Yeah, do let me read the book, Shutter Island. The movie is fantastic, alright. Gripping. But I don't get it about 'the law of four'. A quick check on the Net shows that I'm not alone. Check out Yahoo! Answer, "What is the Law of 4 in Shutter Island?".

Churamane in Missing the Boat...literally and figuratively speaking

Currently reading "Missing the Boat". Heh.

You've probably never heard of the Churamane, have you? They were a particularly lazy and not terribly bright species that lived a long time ago and vanished without a trace.

They were invited by God to be the chosen two to continue their race after the great flood. The story follows them from the time they get invited aboard Noah's Ark, all the way up to the moment they finally arrive at the boat... only to realize that they're late and have been locked out!

When it starts to rain, they are left to realize that they've literally missed the boat on survival, and have doomed their entire species to extinction!

Engagingly written with wonderfully vibrant art, this story will delight readers of all ages and, if you're not looking, may even teach a lesson about procrastination and slothfulness.

From Amazon.com Product Description, "Missing the Boat".

No, these two are not Churamane...

Calvin Cheng...what were you thinking about?!

I do like the point brought up by Mr. K Shanmugam. He noted that "some would say that NMPs, who do not contest elections, should also not enter Parliament". At the very least, NCMP-s have joined the battle of election. Sure, they lost. But to compare to those (read: NMP-s) who did not even participate in the election?!

Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng's passionate opposition against more Non-Constituency MPs - a day after the Constitution was amended to allow more into Parliament - was greeted with some surprise yesterday.

Mr Cheng said the move to allow losing Opposition candidates into Parliament, at best "flies in the face of the logic of democratic elections". "At worst, it's a slap in the face to the people who had voted," he added.

Mr Cheng, a former People's Action Party youth wing member, applauded "the ruling party for allowing their vanquished opponents through the backdoor of Parliament".

While he acknowledged Mr Cheng's point, Law Minister K Shanmugam pointed out that some would say that NMPs, who do not contest elections, should also not enter Parliament.

NCMP Sylvia Lim also quipped: "I find it quite ironic that someone who came into this august chamber through an interview could attack the NCMP scheme in such strong terms."

Mr Shanmugam reiterated that the Government is increasing the number of NCMPs "because we believe strongly in doing what is right for Singapore".

"Singaporeans will know that alternative views are not shut out ... The changes are not being made based on cynical, tactical, short-term calculations - which won't work anyway," he added.

Prabhu Dheva, India's 'Michael Jackson' opens dance school in Singapore

A quick check on YouTube on 'prabhu dheva' reveals an interesting result: a popular clip (it has gather 228,308 views), "Prabhu Deva - Dance India Dance - Full dance". Impressive, isn't it?

But why didn't start the dance school in India & after established itself, then expand to, say, Singapore? This question, I can't really suggest the answer...

India's dance legend Mr. Prabhu Dheva lights an oil lamp in Singapore's Mountbatten centre and symbolically declares the Prabhudheva Dance Academy open - much to the jubilation of dance enthusiasts here.

Mr. Prabhu Dheva is known for his dance mastery and lightning-fast moves executed in full flexibility.

His style has been likened to and earned him the name "India's Michael Jackson" by South India's entertainment industry and Bollywood with nods from the world's dancing fraternity.

Despite being fluent in Western dance styles, he was classically trained in Bharatanatyam.

In his first dance school worldwide, dance enthusiasts can learn a variety of dance styles including jazz, salsa, Bhangra - a Punjabi folk dance - and Indian folk infused with Mr. Prabhu Dheva's unique style.

As the chairman of the dance school, he said, "This is my first dance academy and I am very excited of its prospects."

"I chose Singapore as the first location as Indian culture, especially Bollywood movies, is popular and appreciated across the various communities in Singapore. More and more people are enjoying Bollywood dancing."

However, do not expect to be taught by the dance sensation himself. He said he will try to return to Singapore to conduct lessons if and when he has the time.

Instead, learn from India's best dance choreographers who have worked closely with him many times.

Mr. Prabhu Dheva handpicked these instructors not only for their expertise, but also through watching them teach others.

"I have full confidence that my instructors will make their sessions fun, educational and also intense for those looking for a challenge," he said.

No rhythm? It doesn't matter!

When asked whether it is possible to teach someone who has no rhythm, Mr. Prabhu Dheva said anyone can dance as long as they have the interest.

"It is very easy to teach someone who has the interest to learn but it is very difficult to teach someone who can dance very well but has no interest".

However, do not think that by enrolling in this dance academy, you will be heading for Bollywood's big screens anytime soon.

Sharmila Chauhan, Director of Prabhudheva Dance Academy, said she does not promise that students will be dancing on the big screens as yet.

While she admits outstanding students might be recommended, she emphasises, "No promises for Bollywood!".

The Prabhudheva Dance Academy is now open at 231 Mountbatten Road, Mountbatten center Block G, #01-02, Singapore 397999. For more information visit their website at http://www.prabhudeva.com.sg.

Batam workers riot

And all these fearsome power of riot was unleashed because an Indian supervisor one Mr. Ganesh insulting the Indonesian workers with the word 'stupid'.

Respect, Mr. Ganesh. Respect your fellow human being. Or else.

Thousands of furious Indonesian factory workers set fire to cars and dockyard buildings on Thursday after an Indian company executive called them 'stupid,' police and media reports said.

Nine people were reportedly injured when about 5,000 workers went on the rampage at a factory belonging to PT Drydock World Graha in Batam city, a special economic area south of Singapore, police said. 'An Indian company executive called us, Indonesian workers, 'stupid' and this made us very angry,' a worker called Disra was quoted as saying by Antara news agency.

Around 400 police were called to the scene and evacuated 41 unidentified foreign staff from the seaside factory in boats, Antara reported. Up to 20 cars were set alight, along with a warehouse and two other buildings belonging to the company.

Local police commander Leonidas Braksan addressed the crowd through a loudspeaker and appealed for calm. 'I am on your side. I want you all to keep working well. Your families are waiting for you and your salaries at home,' he said, according to Antara.

He said any foreigner who had insulted Indonesia should leave the country, bringing cheers from the workers who also sang the national anthem and other patriotic songs.

National police spokesman Zulkarnain said the situation 'is now under control and we escorted the protestors outside the company's complex.'

At least 45 Indian workers were evacuated from a riot at shipbuilding company PT Drydocks World Graha dockyard at Tanjung Uncang in Batam, Riau Islands province, Thursday.

Riau Island Police deputy chief Sr. Comr Bambang BS said that the 45 people were evacuated by a police patrol boat to the local police headquarters for safety reasons.

The police, he said, were still investigating the riot, which was reportedly caused by a humiliating statement by one of the Indian managers at the company, who said that Indonesians were "stupid".

Hari Ariadewa of the company's quality control unit said that the riot was sparked by a statement by an Indian supervisor, identified as Mr. Ganesh, who berated one of the Indonesian workers for making a mistake.

This statement was frequently uttered by the Indian supervisor to his subordinates, Hari said.

“The derogatory remark sparked anger among [thousands of] Indonesian workers. A riot then spread to other units,” he added.

Two of the Indian workers were seriously injured, dozens of vehicles and other facilities were set alight and a storage warehouse was destroyed.

From Jakarta Post, "45 Indian workers evacuated from riot in Batam".

Thousands of Indonesian workers of PT Drydock World Graha company factory workers ran a riot on Thursday at the shipping company's dockyard at Tanjung Uncang in Batam, Riau Islands province, the Jakarta Post reported.

They had made two Indian workers seriously injured, dozens of vehicles and other facilities set alight, and a storage warehouse destroyed.

The riot began after an Indian supervisor said that Indonesians were "stupid" while berating an Indonesian worker for making a mistake, a witness said, adding that the humiliating statement was frequently uttered by the Indian supervisor to his subordinates.

Local police had evacuated at least 45 Indian workers of the company with a patrol boat to local police headquarters.

From People's Daily Online, "Indonesian angry workers riot against rude Indian supervisor in Batam".

Four employee cars were reportedly burned and 23 other were broken in a violence in PT Drydock World Graha in Batam, Riau Islands province on Thursday. An Indian citizen named Willendra was badly injured after he was attacked by workers angry over his alleged racist statement. Riau Police said in Metro TV that situation had been restored and the tension was over. The rioting workers had stopped and returned to their post.

“Thank God the workers have come to their senses. Workers from Bangladesh and India have been evacuated. The most important thing is to save them first,” Riau Islands Deputy Police Chief Sr. Comr. Bambang BS said in Metro TV.

Willendra and at least 40 other foreign workers were evacuated from the factory on a National Police boat to Barelang area, also in Batam. They are currently at Barelang Police Headquarters while Willendra is treated at an unidentified hospital.

The fire had been contained and workers would clean up the place.

“Very soon the company will resume activities as usual,” Bambang added.

State news agency Antara reported that Willendra allegedly said something provocative which sparked anger of his Indonesian colleagues and led to the violence. One worker was quoted by Antara alleging that the unrest was triggered after an Indian national said “Indonesian people were stupid.”

Around 500 police officers are still guarding the company premise. At least four of the workers were injured and about 20 vehicles set alight, Antara reported. The offices have also been trashed.

One worker was quoted by Antara as alleging that the unrest was triggered after an Indian national said “Indonesian people were stupid.”

“This is national pride, so we are all angry,” the local, identified as Baim, said.

About 10,000 Indonesians were observed crowding the company premises singing “Great Indonesia” and other patriotic songs, Antara reported.

The National Maritime Institute (Namarin) said the recent violence at Tanjung Priok in North Jakarta was likely to raise shipping insurance costs, and its “international reputation as an export and import gate will plummet.”

The Joint War Committee, a London organization that analyzes shipping risks, had listed maritime regions in Indonesia as “war risk zones” that might pose dangers to domestic or international ships.

Dan the Man...not!

Check this out: the hilarious YouTube clip, "DAN the MAN"!!

And neither are employers embracing call to restore CPF...

Just because it's not 'a', it is not necessary 'b'. It could be 'c', 'd', and so on and so forth till 'z'.

Singapore's labour chief is happy employers are not rejecting NTUC's proposal to restore their portion of the Central Provident Fund (CPF) contributions in view of the improving economy.

Speaking to MediaCorp, NTUC Secretary General Lim Swee Say said he is confident the government will consider the views of both employers and unions when coming to a decision.

The Singapore National Employers Federation (SNEF) had urged the government to take a cautious approach when responding to the National Trades Union Congress' (NTUC's) call for the CPF restoration.

The total CPF contribution rate now stands at 34.5 per cent, with employers contributing 14.5 per cent and employees 20 per cent.

The government had announced in 2003 that the long term-range of CPF contributions would be in the range of 30 to 36 per cent, moving away from the previous 40 per cent contribution rate.

Mr Lim said: "In any downturn when there is a need to cut the CPF, the labour movement is always upfront together with the employers and the government to mobilise the ground, to support a CPF cut.

"At the same time, when the economy is doing well, when the overall climate is positive, the labour movement will not shy away from calling for a restoration.

"At a time like this, when the unemployment is low and the rebound is strong, we really hope that employers would do their part as well, and help to understand and recognise the contributions of the labour force during the downturn.

"And at a time like this when the wage pressure is going to be higher this year, it is important for us to reward workers fairly for their performance, for the better performance of their businesses.

"And secondly, in the process of rewarding, we must keep our wage systems flexible. Not all rewards should go into built-in wages, but some of these should be in the form of bonuses.

"And thirdly, we must also enhance our savings for the long term. With longer life expectancy, workers in time to come when they retire, they need to have more savings in the CPF.

"So if you bear this in mind, we hope that the employers ... firstly will understand why the labour movement is calling for a restoration at a time like this, and secondly more of them will come forward to support."

He continued: "Yes, we agree that the increase should be gradual. The labour movement did not call for a one-step restoration."

From Channel NewsAsia, "Employers not rejecting call to restore CPF, says labour chief".

Hou Yongwei is no casino raider...

Casino Raiders

Hou Yongwei is no casino raider. That's for sure. Nice try, though. At least now we, I mean, the rest of casino raiders need to take note about the existence of the closed-circuit television. Hmm...

A Chinese national has become the first person to be convicted here for attempting to cheat the casino at Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS).

Hou Yongwei was sentenced to 10 months' jail for sneaking in a S$600 bet - in order to deceive a dealer into paying him S$6,000 - after the results had been declared.

The 26 year-old had attempted to commit the past-posting offence on March 28 at a game called "Tai Sai" in which punters bet on the value of three dices rolled in a covered tumbler.

The court heard that Hou tried to place his chips after the dealer had lifted the cover of the tumbler and declared the winning bet to be triple-4s, but was caught in the act.

He was reported to the security manager of the casino, who viewed the closed-circuit television footage and confirmed Hou's offence.

During sentencing, District Judge Ronald Gwee said a strong message must be sent out to all potential casino cheats that they would face substantial sentences if they were convicted.

Hou could have been jailed up to five years and fined.

Meanwhile, a cashier at the Resorts World casino was charged with a theft of S$10,000 from the casino.

Lim Ee Wah allegedly stole the cash while she was on duty on April 6. She told a district court that she intended to plead guilty and would make restitution.

Lim will return to court on May 10. If convicted, she faces up to seven years behind bars and a fine.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Resort World's first casino cheat gets 10 months' jail".

Consolidate your telco bills on your RBS Credit Cards and be rewarded

Sounds interesting? Consolidate your telco bills on your RBS Credit Cards and be rewarded! It is stated that "Total bill rebate is capped at S$30 for 6 months". No longer that appealing, is it?

Do a little bit more paperwork & you'll be rewarded maximum $30 for 6 months. Nah...not for me.

Accident of SBS bus 51

In the need for speed? Not really. Or not determined yet. One of the passengers described how the bus driver couldn't stop the bus. Human error? Or is there something else contributing to this mishap?

Twenty-one passengers were injured when the SBS bus they were in ploughed into a bus stop in Eunos Link.

The accident happened at about noon on Saturday.

According to victims, everything came and went in a flash.

"The driver couldn't control his brakes and engine. The bus was speeding away and it hit three cars ahead of us. The passengers were screaming. And a few of them rushed forward to tell the bus driver to stop the bus, but he couldn't stop the bus," recalled Shanti Daniel, a passenger on SBS Service 51.

Passengers said the bus then travelled for another hundred metres before crashing into the ceiling of a bus stop at Eunos Link.

"Many people were injured. But many people came forward to help us and dragged us out of the bus. I fell backwards and somebody helped me to get up and brought me out of the bus," said Daniel.

15 of the victims, including the driver, were sent to Changi General Hospital, while the other six, who are children, were sent to KKH.

SBS Transit has apologised for the incident.

It has sent representatives to the hospitals to assist the injured and is helping police in their investigations.

From Channel NewsAsia, "21 injured when SBS bus rams into bus stop at Eunos Link".

Google for more 'sbs bus accident', and you'll likely come across the following article dated 09 Aug 2007.

A bus was involved in an accident on Thursday morning at Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange.

Some passengers and the driver suffered minor injuries.

The incident occurred at about 7am when the SBS Transit bus, service number 161, was leaving the Interchange.

There were fewer than ten passengers on board.

According to the police, the bus skidded near the entrance of the Interchange.

The driver and four of the passengers were sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital shortly.

Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information can call the Traffic Police Hotline at 1800-5471818.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Driver, 4 passengers hurt in bus accident at interchange".

So what's your point, I can hear someone asking.

The news about the accident has yet so far had any follow-up articles about it. In the 2007 article, I couldn't find any further news revealing more about the accident. It's a pity if we can't learn from the past incident and/or unwilling to share the lessons.

Singapore: Asia for Idiots???

In a quite unflattering, and trying-too-hard-to-be-funny article by Dalton Tanonaka for Jakarta Post republished in Relax, Singapore is described as "Asia for Idiots".

Tried to google that condescending term "Asia for Idiots" or "Singapore Asia for Idiots", and the closest thing I find is "Singapore as "Asia for beginners".

The writer of the article, Dalton Tanonaka can have his illusion of 'soul' anytime at home. It's over-rated anyway.

Singapore is just a 75-minute flight away from Jakarta, closer than Bali or your Kuningan dinner meeting on a bad traffic night.

It’s so efficiently manageable that international visitors refer to it as “Asia for Idiots”.

And its white-shirted bureaucrats have loosened up enough to open a Las Vegas-style casino that includes performances by the local version of the Pussycat Dolls.

So why do I still find the Lion City a weak kitten compared to its Sumatran tiger neighbor to the south?

My most recent visit to Southeast Asia’s smallest country came on the spur of the moment, a last-minute decision for a needed weekend getaway.

I usually seek the spiritual nourishment of the warm sands of Jimbaran Bay, along with the delicious satisfaction of Seminyak’s world-class dining spots.

But I decided to go on my first extended Singapore fling in nearly 10 years.

And I would soon rediscover why it would take so long to get back.

Let’s start at the airport.

After quickly getting through Changi’s painlessly efficient immigration booths, I was bewildered.

And feeling quite alone.

Where were the touts pushing taxis and that “special Rolex” like those who greet you with huge smiles at Soekarno-Hatta?

Is there no hospitality here?

“Sir, line up here for a taxi. Where would you like to go?” asked the elderly Chinese woman who looked like my stern aunt.

I got into the clean vehicle, driven by an elderly Chinese man who looked like my stern uncle.

No chitchat.

No nothing.

But that’s OK, because by the time I realized that flowing traffic is a normal thing in this part of the world, I was at my hotel in the historic Bugis district.

Actually, everything here is “historic”, preserved and promoted appropriately with markers and plaques as opposed to Jakarta’s casual approach to history.

Even the modern is advertised.

Take the retail complex that sits adjacent to my hotel – “Singapore’s first glass-covered, air-conditioned shopping street.”

Are you kidding me?

You mean I actually have to walk without having to keep my senses sharp for falling objects, bottomless potholes and a sudden monsoon rain?

Where’s the fun?

Speaking of fun, I thought for sure I’d find it at the brand-new casino that had just opened the week before my arrival.

The Resorts World Sentosa project, located on Singapore’s version of Fantasy Island, is the first of two big gambling palaces to open this year.

The massive Marina Bay Sands is scheduled to begin operation in late April.

That this conservative, controlled country would embrace gaming is interesting. But morals often give way to business, and this was certainly an economic decision.

Those with foreign passports are allowed in free (Singaporeans must pay S$100), and no shorts, slippers or singlets (meaning sexy bodysuits) get through the door.

The blackjack and roulette tables are there, as are the slot machines (play the “Wheel of Fortune” progressive for the best value).

And the “Maxims Dolls”, made up of mostly regional recruits, strut the main entertainment stage.

But where are the drink girls in fishnet stockings offering free beverages as they do in Vegas and Macau?

And where are the infectious shouts of winning joy that erupt at casinos around the world?

“People in Singapore don’t do things with passion, they do things to make money,” said former resident Elizabeth, now based in beguiling Bali.

Heck, we gamble in Jakarta every time we try to cross the street.

And the nightlife.

I was pleasantly surprised by the impressive St. James Power Station in the Harbourfront district, which has 13 different entertainment venues under one large roof.

I particularly liked the Bellini Room with its classics theme.

But even there, as in the Latin and disco rooms, something was missing.

Even as customers jumped around to the house beat, even as they cheered the birthday boy attempting awkwardly to dance with the Jennifer Lopez body double, something was missing.

And I’ve seen that something back in Jakarta, in the darkness at CJ’s, in the aisles at Immigrant, and especially on the tabletops at X2.

It’s called soul.

“Most people here jump around because they think they’re supposed to jump around,” explained Kalimantan native Indah, who’s now lived in Singapore for nearly 10 years.

I asked if her Indonesian “spirit” had been beaten down during her years across the sea.

“A bit. But I got quite wasted the other week, came home and threw up on my laptop.”

That was a relief to hear.

Indonesians may leave their money in Orchard Road shops and Clarke Quay pubs.

But they will always have their spice and spunk at home and abroad.

Clash of the Titans

Clash of the Titans (2010)

After watching the movie, "Clash of the Titans", I must express my disappointment. No, it's not merely due to the headache caused by seeing the show in 3D. I prefer the 1981 version of the movie much better. (Just compare that "Clash of the Titans (1981 film)" & "Clash of the Titans (2010 film)".

Clash of the Titans (1981)

But what I am disappointed the most is that there is no Titan involved! Darn. I have always known the story, but I never question the inaccurate title.

Perhaps the only good thing about this show is that it leads to the creation of a Wikipedia article on the show which includes comparison to the myth:
Differences from the myth

* Perseus was the son of Zeus and the princess Danaë - he was conceived when Zeus visited Danaë disguised as a shower of gold, not her husband. Adds to that, Danaë was never married; King Acrisius was her father.

* Acrisius's reason for casting Danaë and Perseus into the sea in a wooden crate were to stop a prophecy that said Perseus would kill him from coming true. Both Perseus and Danaë survived and were rescued by a fisherman, Dictys, when the crate was washed up on the island of Seriphos. Acrisius was never punished by Zeus for this terrible deed.

* Perseus's reason for setting out to find the gorgan Medusa was to save his mother from an unwanted marriage to Dictys's brother, Polydectes, who sent him on the quest in the hopes that he would've been killed. But Perseus returned safely from his quest and used Medusa's head to turn Polydectes to stone.

* Io had no connection with Perseus at all and was never cursed with agelessness; she was a nymph who was seduced by Zeus in the form of a cloud and was then transformed by him into a cow to protect her from Hera's wrath, but once Hera's anger ceased, Io was able to return to her womanly form. On his quest to slay Medusa, Perseus was guided by his half-sister Athena.

* Hades was never an enemy of Perseus, nor did he ever kill any mortals or try to overthrow his brother Zeus, and he was never tricked into taking the underworld; he chose it of his own will when he and his brothers defeated Kronos and divided the world into three parts for them each to take and rule; Zeus took the Heavens and skies, Poseidon took the seas and Hades took the underworld.

* Perseus was given three pieces of armor and weaponry made by the gods - a sword made by Hermes, a mirrored shield made by Athena and a helmet of invisibility made by Hades.

* The Kraken was never a part of Greek mythology; it is actually a sea monster from later legends and folklore and is often portrayed as a giant octopus creature.

* Andromeda was sent to be sacrificed to a sea monster on the orders of Poseidon, not Hades. This order was made when her beautiful, but proud mother, Queen Cassiopeia, had dared claim that Andromeda was more attractive than the Nereids, marine nymphs and grand-daughters of Oceanus. Insulted by such arrogance, they asked Poseidon to avenge the offense, so he sent the sea monster to ravage the kingdom and made it clear through an oracle that no relief would be forthcoming until Andromeda was sacrificed to the monster.

* Perseus married Andromeda after he saved her life, but it wasn't until after he claimed the head of Medusa that he met her. On his way home, he saw her chained to a rock by the sea and fell in love with her. He used Medusa's head to turn the sea monster to stone and claimed Andromeda's hand in marriage.

* Perseus used Medusa's head three times - to turn Polydectes to stone so his mother would be saved from marrying him, to slay the sea monster that Andromeda had been offered to as a sacrifice and to kill Phineus at his wedding to Andromeda after Phineus declared that he was the rightful groom since Andromeda had been engaged to him. He later gave the head to Athena, who went onto wearing it in her armor.

* Acrisius was the ruler of Argos; Andromeda's parents King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia were the rulers of Phoenicia. Perseus and Andromeda later became the new rulers of Argos after the prophecy saying that Perseus would kill Acrisius came true when he accidentally killed him during a series of athletic games.

Tiong Seng IPO

Tiong Seng Holdings plans to raise $48 million of which $9 million would be for repayment of loans from affiliated corporations. Hmm...I dislike this part.

BESIDES China Minzhong Food Corporation, construction group and property developer Tiong Seng Holdings too is heading for a Singapore Exchange mainboard listing.

Singapore-based Tiong Seng yesterday launched its IPO of 189 million new shares at 28 cents each.

Meanwhile, the IPOs of Cache Logistics Trust and Debao Property Development close today.

The invitation shares of Tiong Seng constitute about 25.1 per cent of its enlarged capital of 754 million shares. There will be an over-allotment option of up to 28.35 million new shares.

Of the 189 million new shares, 15 million are for public subscription and 174 million for placement.

The Singapore-based company, which has spread its wings to China and Papua New Guinea as well, is aiming to raise net proceeds of about $48 million. Of this, $20 million is earmarked for construction of pre-casting facilities. Tiong Seng is investing in and using technologies such as pre-casting and advanced form-work systems to help reduce reliance on labour and to boost cost efficiency. This is said to help it cope with the increase in foreign workers' levy and to boost its competitiveness.

Another $17 million will be used for expansion of property development business in China. Repayment of loans from affiliated corporations will take up $9 million and the remaining $2 million of the expected proceeds will go to working capital.

Tiong Seng's principal activities are construction and civil engineering in Singapore and property development in China. In Papua New Guinea, it also undertakes civil engineering projects.

Tiong Seng's chief executive officer Pek Lian Guan is upbeat about the group's future, saying: 'Construction demand in Singapore remains strong and Singapore will continue to be our core market for construction and civil engineering activities.'

The Building & Construction Authority (BCA) had projected that construction demand in Singapore will reach between $21 billion and $27 billion this year and between $18 billion and $25 billion in 2011 and in 2012.

'In China, we are a niche developer and will continue to focus on actively acquiring land use rights to develop residential and commercial properties in the second and third-tier cities,' Mr Pek added.

Tiong Seng's major ongoing projects in Singapore include a $430 million contract to design and construct stations and tunnels at Hillview and Cashew for stage 2 of the Downtown Line in partnership with GS Engineering and Construction Corporation.

The group also has four ongoing projects in the Bohai Economic Rim, one of the main economic zones in China.

In the first nine months of financial year 2009, Tiong Seng recorded net profit of $29.2 million on revenue of $301.7 million.

Last month, the group won a contract of about $150 million. This added to its order book of $953 million as at Feb 17, with most of the secured contracts expected to be fulfilled over the next 12 to 30 months.

The public offer opens today and closes on April 14. Trading is expected to commence on a ready basis on April 16.

From Business Times, "Builder Tiong Seng to raise $48m on SGX".

Singapore-based construction group Tiong Seng Holdings plans to raise some S$53 million through an initial public offering on the Singapore Exchange mainboard.

It's offering 189 million new shares at 28 cents each.

The new shares represent about 25 per cent of Tiong Seng's enlarged share capital of some 754 million shares.

There is an over-allotment option of up to 28.85 million additional new shares.

This represents less than 15 per cent of the new shares.

15 million new shares will be available to the public while 174 million will be placed out.

The proceeds will be used to build pre-casting facilities, expand its property development business, repay loans and for working capital.

Trading of the shares is expected to start next Friday.

Some of Tiong Seng's major completed construction projects include Marina Boulevard and St Regis Hotel.

As of February 17, Tiong Seng's order book for construction and civil engineering projects amounted to some S$953 million.

Last month, the group secured another contract worth S$150 million from the National University of Singapore for the construction of its Kent Vale NUS staff housing.

"Dalam Botol" (In a Bottle): 1st made-in-Malaysia gay film

Malaysia...truly Asia?! Can't believe "Dalam Botol" or "In a Bottle" really--and finally--makes it to the wide screen. Read about it sometime last month (the news republished in Facebook).

Just wonder whether Singapore ever produced a gay movie. So I googled "Singapore gay movie" & I came across this YouTube clip, "Solos - Singapore's first full-length gay movie". It is...interesting. Argh. Less light side beckoning? Haha...

MALAYSIA'S first gay-themed movie could hit cinemas within months, its producer said, after government censors eased restrictions that have stifled the film industry here for decades.

Although the Malay-language movie won't have explicit sex or even kissing, its screening would be a huge step forward for freedom of popular media in this Muslim-majority country that many fear is coming under the influence of Islamic conservatism.

'Dalam Botol,' or 'In A Bottle,' centers on a man whose relationship with his male partner crumbles after he undergoes sex change surgery, said Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman, who produced the film and wrote the screenplay based on the experiences of her friend. 'We are taking a risk,' Ms Raja Azmi, a longtime movie producer, said in an interview this week. 'I'm very nervous. We still don't know if the censors will allow our movie to be shown in the end.'

Ms Raja Azmi submitted a preliminary script last year to the Home Ministry's Film Censorship Board, which verbally approved it after advising her not to shoot scenes of men kissing or being in bed together. Censors also told her to change the original title: 'Anu Dalam Botol,' or 'Penis in a Bottle.' The film's two leads had trouble 'getting loose and comfortable in the first few days,' but they adjusted to their roles before filming ended earlier this year, Ms Raja Azmi said.

'We still shot scenes of skin-to-skin intimacy, with them hugging passionately,' she said. 'Without that, we wouldn't be able to show how much the characters really love each other.'

Censors are unlikely to permit such scenes for Malaysian audiences, who are accustomed to bland, generic comedies and romances. Censorship board officials declined to comment until Ms Raja Azmi submits the film to them. But Ms Raja Azmi - who spent about 700,000 ringgit (S$304,000) to make the film - said she hopes to show an uncut version at film festivals abroad.

From Straits Times, "1st made-in-M'sia gay film".

THE movie is only 70% complete, yet "... Dalam Botol", producer Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman's latest film, is already courting controversy with its daring plot line which touches on homosexuality and transsexualism. TheSun managed to get exclusive access to scenes from the movie which is slated for a July opening, barring any intervention from the censors.

The RM700,000 budget "... Dalam Botol" is actor Khir Rahman's directorial debut, and stars Arja Lee, Wan Raja and Diana Danielle. Arja and Ghaus play gay lovers Rubidin and Ghaus, respectively, whose relationship is tested when the former decides to undergo a sex-change operation. But Ghaus is unable to accept "Ruby" and walks out of the relationship.

Sometime later, Ruby decides that a woman's life is not for him, and decides to stop taking the female hormone injections. Now back to the masculine Rubidin - minus a few parts - he falls in love with Dina (Diana Danielle) and they decide to marry. But can she ever accept his past? Can Rubidin make her happy? Though ... Dalam Botol's plotline may seem far fetched, producer Raja Azmi swears it is based on a friend's experience. "I am not making a judgmental movie. I am just telling a story based on one of my friend’ true experience. In his case, he regrets going for a sex change operation. "I have no right to judge anyone. I am no angel. I have my sins too," she told theSun in an exclusive interview.

Raja Azmi bristles when asked if "... Dalam Botol" is an anti-gay movie. "It is just a simple love story between a man and a man, and a woman and a man," she said.

Considering the subject matter, is she worried about the Censorship Board's reception to the film? After all, she had already changed the title of the film slightly from "Anu Dalam Botol" on the advice of the board. Surprisingly, Raja Azmi believes she will not face any problems in this department, despite butting heads with the board over the many cuts to "Black Widow Wajah Ayu", her first film back in 1994.

Though there was an earlier ruling banning movies showing men wearing women's clothes, Raja Azmi says the Censorship Board has recently come up with more relax rules and regulations. "They are more matured and brave now. They understand the filmmakers predicament." That said, does the 51-year-old go looking for controversy? After all, her books-turned-movies such as "Cinta 200 Ela" and "Black Widow Wajah Ayu" have touched on sexual matters. But she claims she does not look for controversy. "Controversy comes looking for me. I cannot understand why can’t we discuss these topics in our films. We can discuss about God and devils. But we cannot discuss gays and transsexualism. "We should not sweep issues under the carpet any more. We must learn to face them. We must to learn to discuss them rationally."

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno: Caning spared, yet she prefers that punishment?!

Instead of caning, Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno is to serve a three-week community service at an orphanage. She should be grateful, but in one article she is reported to say that "she thinks it would have been better for her to undergo the original sentence". This convict does really not know how to keep her mouth shut.

I can imagine the Sultan will shriek, "Off with her head!".

Yeah. Why not? Here is her punishment--after a long suspenseful delay--is eventually 'finalised' & surely less harsh than the original caning, and yet she does not express her gratitude. * roll eyes *

Part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno will do a three-week community service at an orphanage here after Sultan Ahmad Shah, decided to commute her caning sentence for consuming alcohol in public two years ago.

Kartika, 33, arrived here last night and would report at the State Islamic Religious Department (Jaip) enforcement office at 8.30am today.

She was accompanied by her father, Shukarno Abdul Mutalib, 60, sister Ratna Seri Dewi, 35, and uncle Amley Ayatt, 44.

When contacted yesterday, Kartika said she was shocked by the decision which she knew of only after receiving a letter from a Jaip officer in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

The letter, signed by State Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (Maip) deputy president Datuk Seri Wan Abdul Wahid Wan Hassan said the sultan of Pahang, as the head of religion in the state, had agreed to commute the caning sentence against Kartika.

The mother of two will instead perform the community service at the Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Children's Home here, starting from today.

"I will perform the duty sincerely but I must admit that I'm sad that I have to be away from my children, Mohamad Azfar, 8, and Wann Kaitlynn Saridewi, 6," she said.

Under the Pahang Syariah Criminal Procedure Code Enactment 2002, the Sultan has the prerogative to reduce or commute a syariah sentence even if a convicted person did not make an appeal against it.

Section 133 of the enactment said the Sultan could make such a decision on the advice of the state mufti.

Early last month, Kartika had an audience with Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah, who is also Maip president.

After the meeting, Tengku Abdullah said that the caning sentence against Kartika would depend on the sultan's decision. When met at a Razak Cup match here yesterday, Tengku Abdullah asked everyone to respect the sultan's decision.

He said the sultan had taken into consideration various factors before making the decision, including the problems faced by Kartika and the fact that it was her first offence.

"It's the sultan's prerogative. The community service will also serve as a lesson to all," said Tengku Abdullah who admitted that he was informed by the sultan about his decision two weeks ago.

On July 20 last year, Kartika was fined RM5,000 (S$2,150) and ordered to be given six strokes of the rotan by the Kuantan Syariah High Court after she pleaded guilty to consuming alcohol in public.

She settled the fine but refused to appeal against the caning sentence, which was postponed several times.

The sentence became the talk of the country and even received coverage in the foreign media.

From Asiaone, "Kartika spared cane, to serve at orphanage".

Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno would rather be caned than undergo community service.

The mother of two was sentenced to six strokes of the rotan and fined RM5,000 for drinking beer at a hotel in Cherating two years ago.

The caning sentence was replaced earlier this week by the Sultan of Pahang who is also the head of Islam in the state.

He ordered her to perform community service at a children’s home in Kuantan for three weeks. Kartika (picture), 33, said she respected the Sultan’s decision and would follow it.

But when asked if she thinks it would have been better for her to undergo the original sentence, she said firmly:

“Yes. Because they already sentenced me. If they couldn’t make it, they should have asked their legal advisers.”

“I don’t want Islam to be fitnahed (sic)... For those who study law, this thing is not in the enactment,” she added, referring to the Islamic criminal law.

She declined to comment when asked if the change was just.

She pointed out that it was the Sultan’s prerogative. Kartika said she would abide by his order because she respected his authority.

Kartika, 33, was speaking to reporters at a hastily-arranged conference here after meeting up with her sister who had just bussed in.

The former model was also accompanied by her father and uncle.

The Perakian said they were leaving immediately for Pahang.

She was required to meet the state’s Islamic religous enforcers at their office in Kuantan at 9am sharp tomorrow.

The Pahang Islamic Religion and Malay Adat Resam Council had on March 26 issued Kartika a letter stating that the sultan had ordered her sentence to be replaced.

The letter directed her to serve at the Tengku Ampuan Fatimah Children’s Home in Kuantan for three weeks from April 2.

Kartika said she was only told the work required her to be indoors. She added that she would only know the rest after speaking with the enforcers.

Kartika who had recently split from her husband said she had learnt a lot from the episode.

“I truly regret drinking that alcoholic beverage,” she said, casting her large expressive eyes downwards.

She appeared flustered by the media attention. Asked if she now considered her case closed, she said: “I don’t know yet, the thing is not settled. I hope this thing can be settled. I leave the rest to be resolved by the experts.”

Kartika, who is currently unemployed, said she was still uncertain about her future but hoped to pursue plans involving the care of her firstborn Muhammad Azfar Affandi, 10, who suffers from cerebral palsy.

She politely declined to elaborate.

From Malaysian Insider, "Kartika says she would rather be caned".

Rozz vs Ris Low: the battle of 2 DJ-s

Photo from MediaCorp Radio here

"Ris Low killed the Radio (987FM) Star", I chose to name the title of the post earlier. Heck. She might as well literally did that with the co-host of "The Shan, Rozz & Ris show", Rozz aka Rosalyn Lee walked out midway of the show.

Talking about professionalism. Or the lack of it, some may sneer. Rozz may just say goodbye to her impressive list of record:
In 2005, Rosalyn beat 9 others to emerge the winner at the Singapore leg of the MTV Whatever Things Show Host Contest. She went on to represent Singapore at the Regional Finals in Bangkok, joining winners from China, Philippines, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. She bagged the 1st Runner-Up title.

As a definite star on the rise, Rosalyn was awarded “Breakout Star Of The Year” at the first ever ELLE Awards 2006, beating other nominees like artiste Felicia Chin and Samantha Tan from Eric Khoo’s Be With Me.

(Now to think about it, I can imagine Rozz feeling pissed off that she has to share the program with wannabe star Ris Low, the notorious dethroned beauty queen.)

Well, I won't be surprised the show would soon be renamed as "The Shan only show"!

Drama unfolds on Day 2 of The Shan, Rozz & Ris show: Furious over her co-host Ris Low, Rozz walked out midway of her own radio show.

It appears that they have achieved exactly what their boss had set them out to do - "spice up the evening show". Barely two days into the newly set-up Shan, Rozz & Ris show, and drama unfolded last evening, when Rozz stomped off her own radio show, seemingly furious over her co-host, Ris Low.

It seemed like Ris not only showed up two hours late on her first day [citing the slip-up over military time 1600hrs as 6pm], she also ended her shift two hours earlier on her second day. Too much of a coincidence you think?

The brouhaha, as heard over the airwaves, started off with Rozz talking about "I know people think that I shouldn't let emotions get in the way of work but I'm just like that" and "I've decided to leave the show because at least the angry one is not here."

Apparently, before she made her sudden exit, Rozz had sounded rather unhappy when she spoke about Ris's comment to reporters [on her 1st day at work] of her seemingly frostiness toward the ex-beauty queen.

According to Shan, who told his listeners that all efforts to reach Rozz through phonecalls and text messages were unsuccessful. During the "Muttons to Midnight Show" hosted by Justin and Vernon, the radio DJs were also heard discussing about the drama and spoke about Rozz sending a text message to her boss, requesting for a transfer.

Spotted on another 987FM radio DJ, Desiree Lai's twitter page, she posted: "So Ris left early. Roz was pissed off. She left b4 show ended. Roz wants a transfer. Tom its juz Shan & Ris. Roz nw refuses 2 pick up fone."

Question remains now, if this is for real or just another publicity stunt. Creative or outrageous - we'll just have to wait and see. Either way it's got everyone talking and all the media buzzing did spice up their evening show after all.

From MSN Entertainment, "987FM DJ Rozz walked out of her own radio show".
