Will Cotton inspires Kate Pary to pose naked on top of candyfloss...

Yuck. But who this Will Cotton by the way? A quick google on the name leads to some fantastical paintings. Take this one in the left for example. Does it really look like painting?

The two lady are supposedly lying (without any clothes on) on the top of the cotton candy clouds. I would have thought it's merely clouds with perhaps the dusk setting. It's still a fantastic painting, though.

By the way, there's even a Wikipedia article on Will Cotton. It's said that Will Cotton is an American painter and that his work primarily features landscapes composed of sweets, often inhabited by human subjects.

American singer Katy Perry, 25, posed naked on top of candyfloss for her latest album's cover -- all in the name of art. The fiancee of British comedian, Russell Brand, collaborated with painter Will Cotton to produce the cover for her second album Teenage Dream.

"Yes, I posed naked for the album but you can't really see that much of me," said Perry, who is slated to marry Brand soon.

"I love the artwork of Will Cotton and saw one of his works that had cotton candy lying around with different kinds of women in it. It was subtle. I wanted to be in that world and decided to use that for my album's cover," said Perry, whose parents are both pastors.

The singer is in town for the MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010! concert at the Sunway Lagoon Resort today.

Perry refused to talk about her personal life at the roundtable interview.

Clad in a black dress with metallic embellishments, Perry appeared friendly and joked with the local media once in a while.

"I have a lot of personality in me that I wanted to show. Sometimes, I want to be fun, quirky, weird and all," Perry said.

The California-born was just a girl next door who grew up listening to gospel songs and singing in church when she was 10. Today, she has sold more than five million copies of her debut album, One of the Boys, which contains hits like I Kissed a Girl, Hot n Cold, Thinking of You and Waking Up in Vegas.

Teenage Dream will be released on Aug 30. Perry wrote all the songs in this album and collaborated with rapper Snoop Dogg in the first single, California Gurls. The single reached No. 1 on the Billboard Digital Songs and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

"I collaborated with other composers, too, in writing songs. I think the lyrics are really important because those are the things that end up on T-shirts. They need to be memorable," said Perry.

"But it doesn't mean that I make the best songs even though I composed them myself."

Teenage Dream was inspired by Perry's life in her hometown, Santa Barbara, California. "I can't run from where I came from, nobody can."

Other songs include The One that Got Away, Peacock, Firework and Who Am I Living For.

"My parents haven't heard my new album yet. I'm sure they are going to grunt when they hear Peacock," said Perry, who hopes to move her fans emotionally and physically through her new album.

"When I was touring, I wanted people to dance more. So I wrote an album that made people move, yet didn't sacrifice the story substance that I had on the last record," said the two-time Grammy-nominated singer.

After here, Perry will be performing in Singapore's SINGFest on Tuesday.

From Asiaone, "Katy: I was indeed naked".

What To Do In A Zombie Attack

Oh yes, do check out this 'educational' clip, "What To Do In A Zombie Attack". So far almost 1,9 million viewers have benefited. Heh.

OMG - One Moment of Glory

I really can't tell how different this talent show, "One Moment of Glory" will be compared to another competition, "America's Got Talent". We just have to wait and see...

Featuring ten contestants ranging from fire-eating magicians, singers and even pole dancers, Channel 5's brand new talent show "One Moment of Glory" (OMG) promises to light up the screen when it debuts in August.

"One Moment of Glory" will be hosted by Gurmit Singh and Michelle Chong and presided over by celebrity judges Irene Ang and Mark "The Flying Dutchman" van Cuylenburg.

Various celebrities such as actresses Jeanette Aw and Beatrice Chia will also appear as special guest judges over the course of the show.

However, the main draw of the show will not be the celebrity judges or the performers, but the 'challenger' mechanic that will constantly threaten contestants with elimination.

Unlike previous talent shows where audiences only get to vote to determine the winner, OMG will invite the public to enter the fray as the show progresses.

Members of the public can send videos of themselves showing off their talents to the show's organisers.

If they are shortlisted, they will be invited to get on the show from the second episode onwards to challenge any of the contestants for one of the eight berths that will qualify them for a shot at the S$50,000 grand prize.

If the challenger wins, he replaces the original contestant and takes over his spot in the eight. Of course, he will then have to defend his own position from other challengers that will turn up.

The number of berths will gradually reduce from eight to five and then four to one as the competition progresses, with only the top performer walking away with the prize, causing the competition to heat up exponentially as the weeks go by.

When asked about the 'challenger' mechanic, Chong said that it will add a lot of excitement to the show and recounted how glory can be fleeting.

"There was one contestant. He was in and out in the same episode. It was really just one moment of glory," Chong recounted.

"You never know how long you'll be on the podium," added Singh sympathetically.

Celebrity judge van Cuylenburg was overjoyed for the chance to preside over the contest and felt that allowing the public to join in the fun was a welcome change from the way talent competitions are usually run.

"I finally get to do what (acid-tongued radio DJ) Glenn Ong does every morning. Judge people," said van Cuylenburg excitedly. "If you always watch these TV shows and go 'I can do better', now is the time to bring it on!"

"I want to see people who are willing to go the extra mile and develop as the weeks go on. Show me that hunger, show me that want to improve, and I'll try my best to keep you in," he added.

"One Moment of Glory" debuts at 8pm, August 9 on Channel 5 with subsequent episodes airing every Wednesday at 8pm.

From Channel NewsAsia, "OMG! Here comes a new challenger!".

NEA Litter Munchers nom nom nom your trash!!

Check out the comical clip, "Attack of the Litter Munchers". I like the analysis part: Litterbug Youth with Composition of Responsibility 0%, Friendliness 0%, and...Littering 100%. Lol. Well done, NEA.

THE National Environment Agency is putting a new spin on litter bins as part of a nationwide campaign to curb littering.

Called litter munchers, these litterbins have been embellished to help engage youths to take ownership to keep their surrounding environment clean.

The litter munchers initiative underpins NEA's targeted public outreach and education efforts to change littering behaviour in Singapore.

In a one-year sociological study by NEA which interviewed 1,500 students, 69 per cent admitted to littering and 23 per cent even said nothing will stop them from littering.

These youths also played down the impact of littering on the environment with some reasoning that littering provides cleaners with jobs.

In addition, the study showed that more than 78 per cent of those aged 17 and above expect the Government to be responsible for keeping public areas clean.

These make the youths a key target group for NEA's thrust to instil a stronger sense of ownership of public places and to promote an anti-littering behaviour.

'The little munchers initiative is part of NEA's efforts to reach out to young Singaporeans to impress upon them the right social behaviours in a fun and amusing way. It complements the punitive approach we take towards litterbugs,' said NEA CEO Andrew Tan.

The litter munchers will also be incorporated into a skit to deliver the anti-littering messages in all primary and secondary schools.

There is also an interactive website www.littermunchers.com.sg, to engage wired youths through contests such as 'Vote for Your Favourite Muncher', 'Bin Bin Game' and 'Design Your Own Litter Muncher'. In addition, youths can download cut-outs to create their personal muncher.

NEA has also roped in local celebrity Edmund Chen as its first cleanliness ambassador.

StarCraft II - Ghost of the Past trailer

Cool clip, "StarCraft II - Ghosts of the Past Trailer". The actual title of the game is "StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty".

Too bad I'm not really into gaming. Heh.

IT IS a classic that set the standard for real-time strategy games and the sequel took 12 years in the making.

At half past noon on Tuesday, thousands of eager fans finally managed to get their hands on Starcraft II, the sequel to the game which has sold more than 11 million copies worldwide.

Funan DigitaLife Mall, the venue for the sequel's release on Tuesday, estimated the number of fans to be over 10,000.

Among them was the chairman of Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Mr Lee Hsien Yang, and his son.

The first in line, 23-year-old Nicol Tan, a student chef, had been waiting since 11am the previous day.

'As a hard-core fan for more than 10 years, I wanted to come in early to see how Blizzard sets up the stage because it's a once in a lifetime experience,' he said.

From Straits Times, "Starcraft draws thousands".

Raya Harmoni, Hari Raya light-up

Mark the date. It's on 6 Aug when Geylang Road will be lit up to celebrate Hari Raya. There will be performances by Andrew Andhika & Chelsea Olivia. A lot of photo opps for sure.

GEYLANG Road will be alight with colourful lights and decorations to celebrate Hari Raya next month.

Majlis Pusat, which was chosen by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) to organise the annual light-ups for the past 13 years, expects crowd turnout at the 49-day event to hit two million.

This includes the turnout of 20,000 expected during the launch of the light-up on August 6, which will feature performances by artistes such as Andrew Andhika and Chelsea Olivia from popular soap opera Tasbih Cinta dan Melati Untuk Marvel.

This year theme is on Raya Harmoni, to coincide with international racial harmony day, which falls close to it.

"You're talking about...dreams?"

Consciencefood IPO

What annoys me is that I have not even tried the instant noodles product of Consciencefood. As much as I'm tempted to dabble in this stock, I might give it a miss.

Instant noodles are the Group’s flagship product and are marketed under Alhami, Santremie, Maitri and Alimi brand names. The Group’s snack noodles are marketed under Hola Hole and Mikka brand names.

Go to SGX.com for its prospectus & more info.

CONSCIENCEFOOD, an Indonesian maker of instant noodles, yesterday launched an initial public offer to raise $18.8 million. It is selling 104 million shares at 22 cents apiece, which prices the company at 5.6 times historic earnings.

Consciencefood earned 3.9 Singapore cents last financial year, or 85 billion rupiah, on sales of 490 billion rupiah.

The placement of 96 million new shares and almost 8 million vendor shares represents 26.3 per cent of the company's enlarged share capital. Two million shares are available for public subscription, while the remaining 102 million will be placed out.

The invitation opened yesterday and will close at noon next Tuesday. Listing and trading of the shares on the Singapore Exchange is expected to start at 9am next Thursday. Collins Stewart is the manager, underwriter and placement agent for the public offer.

Sales of instant noodles in Indonesia are expected to grow from 1.09 million tonnes in 2009 to 1.25 million tonnes in 2014, he said.

Mr Law said the company wants to expand into new products, new instant noodle flavours and new markets in China and India.

GSS with SMRT 2010 Promotion -- what's wrong with the advertisement?

At first I don't get it. I've just received the email from SMRT with regards to a "GSS with SMRT 2010 Promotion" contest which will end by the end of this month. The contest is supposedly to start on 17 May.

So why only now is the junk mail about the contest sent out? I have no idea.

No to merely critize, I admit that the advert itself is nicely designed. The contrast of the colour of the poster. The simplicity of the shopping lady who is apparently making a call (to book SMRT taxi) after shop at SMRT Xchanges (either at Dhoby Xchange, Raffles Xchange, Choa Chu Kang Xchange, Tanjong Pagar Xchange, or Boon Lay Xchange).

A question lingers, though, if one is indeed shopping a lot at all these SMRT Xchanges, wouldn't one prefer to choose the train to a taxi for going home? To call a taxi when you're just nearby a train station doesn't seem to make sense to me. Really.

YOG & O stands for Orgy, not Olympic?!

Well, that's what my prudent colleague commented in disbelief. We're talking about how condoms will be made available to officials & athletes in the incoming YOG (Youth Olympic Games).

No, the rings are not the top view of condoms of many colors

What I don't get is that firstly officials as they are not minor, surely they can purchase their own condoms as and when required. Ehm.

Secondly, if the youths are minor why then this magical rubbers are made available to them? Even the organisers were quoted to say, "We have to be mindful that the athletes coming to the Youth Olympic Games are minors and in accordance to Singapore's law, the age of consent for sexual activity is 16 and allowing free distribution of condoms within the Youth Olympic Village may be misconstrued by the young athletes."

And yet, they (the condoms, not the young athletes) are to 'be made available' as well for athletes. Kind of contradicting statements, I reckon.

Condoms will be made available to officials and athletes of the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

It'll only be available at the medical clinic of the Youth Olympic Village (YOV).

In a written statement, the organisers said: "The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee and the International Olympic Committee had jointly agreed not to widely distribute condoms in YOV or any YOG venues on the basis that the athletes are minors."

The condoms are provided by UNAIDS - the Joint United Nations Programmes on HIV and Aids.

"We have to be mindful that the athletes coming to the Youth Olympic Games are minors and in accordance to Singapore's law, the age of consent for sexual activity is 16 and allowing free distribution of condoms within the Youth Olympic Village may be misconstrued by the young athletes," said the organisers.

Providing condoms at other Olympic events is not unusual.

Some reports say in the Beijing Olympics, 100,000 condoms were made available.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Condoms provided at Youth Olympic Village's medical clinic by UNAIDS".

A haiku as I am sitting on a bench at Bishan Park II & pondering about how Kallang River is being brought into the park

The ants are racing...
...to where--no, I cannot tell!
They rush to their goal.

Hush, Natalie Faye is naked!

Frankly I don't get it.

Firstly, I never hear about the actress, Natalie Faye. A quick check shows that she has two blogs (NatalieFaye & Pixie Dollhouse).

Secondly, the movie, Hush (the so-called 'Singapore's most erotic film') is merely a 20-minute show. Boo hoo!! Might as well categorized it as a short film. And no, it surely is not worthy to pay a full movie ticket just to watch a 20-minute Singapore's most erotic SHORT film!

YouTube clip, "Hush"

Thirdly, Board of Film Censors passed the show with no cuts. I feel at a loss for words. Or it should perhaps to be viewed as the show is totally harmless. No matter how naked Natalie Faye is, it doesn't deserve the sharp cut of BFC's scissors. That is to say, the show is...boo-ring!

NATALIE Faye may be one of Singapore's first actresses to bare all in a Singaporean film. The 20-minute film, titled Hush, features a brief full frontal shot of Faye, among other steamy scenes.

Hush is being hyped as 'Singapore's most erotic film' and tells the story of a family with dark secrets. It has been passed by the Board of Film Censors with no cuts.

In an interview with RazorTV, Faye says that she has no qualms about taking her clothes off for the camera if the plot calls for it.

Executive producer Kelvin Sng says that no other local film has ever shown full-frontal nudity involving a woman, even though male frontal nudity has been featured in Royston Tan's 15, Ekachai Uekrongtham's Pleasure Factory, Kan Lume's Solos and other films.

After its gala premiere at the Cathay, the film will be screened for the public in Sinema at Old School in August.

From Straits Times, "First actress to bare all?".

Kreuz Holdings IPO

Finally an IPO. But any takers?

OIL and gas player Kreuz Holdings launched an initial public offer (IPO) of 80 million new shares on Catalist yesterday.

The IPO, which represents 15.8 per cent of the group's enlarged share capital, comprises 4.5 million public offer shares and 75.5 million placement shares.

At 27 cents each, it is tagged at a historical price-earnings ratio of about 6.9, based on the company's adjusted earnings per share of 3.9 cents for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009.

Kreuz Holdings, which provides sub-sea services such as the inspection, repair and maintenance (IRM) of offshore production and pipeline facilities, started as a unit of Swiber Group.

It has the first right of refusal to participate in Swiber's offshore projects.

'Our close working relationship with the Swiber Group has enabled us to gain greater access to the offshore construction industry, while benefiting the Swiber Group through our provision of sub-sea services,' said Kurush Contractor, executive director and chief executive officer of Kreuz Holdings.

The company is focusing on South-east Asian and Indian offshore markets for installation and IRM projects.

'As a player servicing the oil and gas industry, we are seeing increased demand for sub-sea services,' it said.

'The stabilisation of oil prices has led to increased capital expenditure by oil and gas companies on new offshore installation and construction projects.'

The IPO is expected to raise net proceeds of about $19.2 million, $12 million of which has been earmarked for the acquisition of such assets as remotely operated vehicles and diving systems.

The remaining $7.2 million will be retained for general working capital purposes.

The public offer will open at 9am today and close at noon on July 27.

Listing and trading of the shares is expected to start at 9am on July 29.

DBS Bank is the sponsor, underwriter and placement agent for the IPO.

From Business Times, "Kreuz Holdings launches Catalist IPO of 80m shares".

Kreuz Holdings, a subsea solutions provider for the oil and gas industry, plans to raise about S$19.2 million through an initial public offering on Catalist.

Kreuz is offering 18 million new shares priced at 27 Singapore cents each.

4.5 million shares have been set aside for the public, while 75.5 million shares will be placed out.

Kreuz plans to use S$12 million of the proceeds for the acquisition of new assets, including remotely-operated vehicles and diving systems.

The remaining S$7.2 million will be used for general working capital purposes.

The company's subsea services include activities supporting new offshore installation and construction projects, as well as inspection, repair and maintenance of existing offshore production and pipeline facilities.

The public offer will open at 9am on July 22 and will close at noon on July 27.

Listing and trading of Kreuz's shares are expected to start two days later.

Looking ahead, the company said it may also acquire anchor handling tugs and make further inroads into markets in Asia Pacific and India.

"In particular, we will focus on Brunei, where there is a high demand for work in the mature oil fields, and in India, which is a market the Group is familiar with and has good knowledge of," said Kurush Contractor, CEO of Kreuz.

Kreuz Holdings is also looking at the new opportunities in the Middle East, by way of corporate alliances.

The company's order book stands at some US$133.2 million as at 16 June 2010.

It comprises secured contracts which are to be completed over the next five to 60 months, barring unforeseen circumstances.

"Christine": the millionaire Filipina maid

Leonie Gardens is the name of the 99-year condo where the maid preferred to be known as "Christine" now lives as a millionaire. Yes, it almost sounds like a fairy tale. And it does prove a good customer service indeed in long term profits one immensely. That, and having a wealthy philantrophist as the employer.

A devoted Filipina maid inherited six million Singapore dollars from her late employer after more than 20 years of service, a newspaper report said Wednesday.

"I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money," the 47-year-old single woman - identified only by the pseudonym "Christine" - told the Straits Times in an interview.

The maid refused to be named in public for fear of possible threats to her life in the impoverished Philippines, where wealthy people have been kidnapped for ransom and some killed by their abductors.

The windfall, including cash and a luxury apartment near the Orchard Road shopping belt, came from the estate of her employer Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist who died last year at 66.

The maid had also taken care of the doctor's late mother, and was told that she would be a beneficiary of her employer's will when it was drawn up in 2008.

"There were no secrets between us. I was not surprised at all when she told me how much I was going to get," the maid recalled.

"Christine" was devastated when Quek died a year ago, as the two were inseparable, and temporarily moved in with the doctor's nephew for solace.

"It was heartbreaking for me as I saw more years with Doctor Quek than with my own mother. I would break down every time I thought about her. I could not be by myself," she said.

"I was always beside her. Wherever she went, I was with her."

The maid, who is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, said her newfound wealth had not changed her lifestyle.

"I do not really think much about the money I got. I just live my life as I did before, and not as a rich person," the maid, dressed simply in a blouse and slacks with short-cropped hair, was quoted as saying.

"I am still who I was before. I cannot behave differently because I have money now. Even my Filipino maid friends here still treat me the same."

Nearly 200,000 foreign maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in affluent Singapore, which has a population of five million.

From Asiaone, "Filipina maid inherits millions from Singaporean employer".

IN 1986, a petite Filipina arrived here to take up a job as a maid to a general practitioner.

When her employer Dr Quek Kai Miew died a year ago, she inherited a cool $6 million from her estate, including the apartment in Leonie Hill.

From Straits Times, "$6 million maid".

Singapore Marina Bay vs Shanghai Bund

Singapore PM Mr. Lee Hsien Loong was quoted to say that the new Marina Bay will define Singapore in the same way the Bund defines Shanghai. So will there be any local TV production titled, "Singapore Marina Bay" just like the classic Hong Kong drama, "The Bund" or "Shanghai Bund"? Heh. I guess not. That will be too obvious that we're trying to challenge Shanghai Bund 'too closely'.

And will we have a fancy theme song like that for The Bund too? Check out the YouTube clip here.

The Marina Bay will be a key platform and catalyst for Singapore's future growth.

Speaking at the official opening of the waterfront promenade at Marina Bay on Sunday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said Marina Bay will boost Singapore's position as a financial hub for Asia.

Mr Lee said the new Marina Bay will define Singapore in the same way the Bund defines Shanghai.

He said: "The private sector has shown its confidence in Marina Bay. Already, it has attracted $20 billion of private sector investments in real estate. And we've got firms, local and international ones from around the world - America, Australia, Europe, the Middle East - they've come, they're optimistic and bullish about the development. In fact, they would like us to develop it further."

Marina Bay is not just for businesses.

With the completion of the 3.5km waterfront promenade, which follows the opening of the Helix Bridge and Marina Bay Sands integrated resort earlier this year, visitors can now walk around the whole Marina Bay and take in the magnificent views.

Prime Minister Lee said: "I came here one evening a few weeks ago, walked along the helical bridge, walked most of the way around the Bay, and it was full of people - families, children, courting couples, tourists - taking in the sights, enjoying the atmosphere."

With the upcoming Youth Olympic Games and Gardens by the Bay to open soon, Mr Lee said the area promises to be a vibrant destination for all Singaporeans and tourists.

He said the development of Marina Bay mirrors the government's efforts to build best homes for Singaporeans.

And this is possible, as long as the economy prospers and people work together.

Mr Lee also launched the Marina Bay City Gallery.

URA's group director (Urban Planning and Design), Fun Siew Leng, said: "The Marina Bay City Gallery shows the transformation story of Marina Bay - how it's been developed over the last 30 years, from planning to implementation to what you see on site today. It tells the fascinating story of all the different events that happen in this area since the 1800s up to now."

The gallery's centrepiece is a model of the entire Marina Bay area.

Visitors can make the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands integrated resort light up, by just touching the interactive panels.

Admission to the gallery is free.

To celebrate the opening of the waterfront promenade, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) has organised a two-day carnival, which started on Saturday.

It expects about 80,000 people to gather at Marina Bay area to enjoy the performances and activities.

Earlier Sunday, Prime Minister Lee flagged off some 20,000 participants for The New Paper Big Walk@Marina Bay at the Singapore Flyer. He then took a walk to the Youth Olympic Park, The Helix and the Mist Walk at the Marina Bay waterfront promenade.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Marina Bay to define S'pore the way the Bund defines Shanghai".

Condos affected by 17/07 flash floods

Cluny Court, Gentle Reflections, Tessarina, Opera Estate. They are some of the names of the condominiums affected by yesterday flash floods. Needless to say that one will think twice to purchase a unit in any of those affected condos.

That's definitely something to think about prior to committing to buy a condo: is this area prone to flash floods?

RESIDENTS in Opera Estate thought they were safe from floods.

For almost 10 years, since a $31-million drainage system was completed to shuttle away rainwater in the neighbourhood, the residents in the traditionally flood-prone area had been dry.

But they woke up on Saturday to find themselves in the soup - a muddy, teh tarik-coloured concoction of leaves, rubbish and sandy rainwater that gushed into their homes.

Neighbours screamed through partitions between houses at one another to alert them about the waters that went up to 38cm high at some spots, while trash bins, buckets and shoes went floating down the road.

Long-time residents said it was the worst flood they have seen since the 1960s.

Two rows of families, along Norma Terrace and Rienzi Street, were worst hit, with many saying their refrigerators, washing machines and other home appliances had short-circuited, and caused the whole house's power to go out.

From Straits Times, "'Not supposed to happen'".

CLUNY Court has a two-storey basement carpark, and both levels were flooded on Saturday. As luck would have it, there was only one car parked there as most of the four-storey high building consists of shop units and it was early in the morning.

Mr Johann Soh, 33, a tenant since last December and the franchisee of Marble Slab Creamery on the first floor, said the previous flood on June 16 was limited to the lower basement and subsided rapidly.

But this time, it will take at least 10 pumps working and at least a day to get the carpark cleared of water, said Mr Peter Teo, a coordinator from E-tech Building Services.

Only then can other problems be fixed: like the power outage.

In Bukit Timah, the condominiums Gentle Reflections and Tessarina also had their carparks flooded.

A Tessarina resident who wanted to be known only as Mrs Ho, said that she had two cars trapped in the carpark.

From Straits Times, "Cars rained out".

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No, I Regret Nothing)

Check out the hauntingly beautiful song, "Edith Piaf - Non, je ne regrette rien (1961)". Yes, this is the song also featured in the movie, Inception. Ironic how the very much modern show is using such an old song.

And this is the lyric of the French song, "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" or "No, I Regret Nothing":

Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien (No, I regret nothing)

Non, rien de rien, (No, Nothing at all)
Non, je ne regrette rien, (No, I regret nothing)
Ni le bien qu'on m'a fait, (Neither the good things)
Ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal. (Nor the bad, they are
the same to me)

Non, rien de rien, (No, nothing at all)
Non, je ne regrette rien, (No, I regret nothing)

Inception--Cool movie posters (worth being chased away from Shaw Lido)

Just went back from watching "Inception" at Shaw Lido. Took only the top two movie posters at the cineplex before I was chased away. Heh. They're presented in a form of boxes that feature characters such as the Extractor, the Architect, the Point Man, the Chemist, the Forger, the Shade, the Tourist and the Mark.

The third one is part of the giant poster on the way towards the Orchard MRT.

The movie, Inception is about 148 minutes but you'll hardly feel the time moves. Oh, and there were a lot of people waiting till after the credits in the end of the show as we were all wondering whether there was another 'ending'. You'll know what I mean after you watch the show.

Sunshine Empire trio convicted: Can't they be caned as well???

Alright! This ought to be the (bad, but expected) sequel to "Sunshine Empire: The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine anymore...on this Empire".

The Sunshine Empire trio have gone to the dark side (Yes, I do hope the punishment is a long free stay in a prison, but only on 30 July will we know what exactly the outcome is. No, I don't think it will involve any caning. Pity!).

THE flamboyant founder of Sunshine Empire, which amassed $180 million in 15 months, was found guilty by a district court on Friday for running a fraudulent scheme and for faking accounts.

James Phang Wah, 50, and former director Jackie Hoo Choon Cheat, 30, had enriched themselves by at least $8 million through Sunshine's multi-level marketing scheme.

Phang's wife Neo Kuon Huay, 47, was found guilty of falsifying payment vouchers together with Phang. They did this so that she could receive commissions amounting to nearly $1 million.

The trio will be sentenced on July 30.

Some 20,000 people bought into the flashy scheme, which promised high returns on its lifestyle packages.

Sunshine sold these packages at its plush Toa Payoh Central office for over 15 months, before it was raided by officers from the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) in November 2007.

From Straits Times, "Sunshine Empire trio convicted".

The head of defunct multi-level marketing firm Sunshine Empire, Phang Wah, was found guilty on Friday of several offences, including running a fraudulent trading company and falsifying accounts.

His wife, Neo Kuon Huay, and ex-company director Jackie Hoo Choon Cheat were similarly convicted.

The trio were involved in what is believed to be the biggest Ponzi-like scheme in Singapore. They had managed to raise more than $180 million from investors within 15 months.

The three defendants appeared expressionless as they stood in the dock with the men sharply dressed in business suits.

The packed courtroom listened intently as District Judge Jasvender Kaur read out her judgment.

She found Phang, 49, and Hoo, 29, each guilty of eight charges related to criminal breach of trust involving nearly a million dollars.

The judge also found Phang and his 46-year-old spouse, Neo, each guilty of six counts of falsifying accounts involving nearly $600,000.

During the trial, the prosecution's expert witness, international forensic accountant Luke Steadman, had said that the company had a business model that was bound to fail.

Tens of thousands of investors paid the company up to $12,000 each for the different packages it offered.

They were then promised high returns in the form of rebates from the sale of lifestyle products.

However, the rebates cost more than the products themselves.

The company was not retaining any revenue by October 2007, said Mr Steadman, as it was paying what was referred to as Consumer Rebates Privileges at a level that was unsustainable.

On Friday, Judge Kaur said she accepted Mr Steadman's analysis.

She noted that the abnormally high returns were meant to dazzle and attract participants who had no in-depth knowledge of the scheme.

The judge added that it would have been self-evident that the scheme was destined to collapse and participants who bought the packages would suffer a loss.

The trio will be sentenced on July 30.

For running a fraudulent business, Phang and Hoo could be sentenced up to seven years' jail and fined a maximum of $15,000.

And for criminal breach of trust, the men could either face life imprisonment or jailed up to 10 years and fined.

For falsifying accounts, Phang and Neo could be sentenced up to seven years' jail and fined.

From Today, "Sunshine Empire trio convicted".

Update on 30/07: sadly, there's no caning involved for the trio fraudsters...

THE flamboyant founder of Sunshine Empire, who amassed $180 million in 15 months, and his former director were jailed by a court on Friday for running a fraudulent scheme and for faking accounts.

James Phang Wah, 50, and former director Jackie Hoo Choon Cheat, 30, had enriched themselves by at least $8 million through Sunshine's multi-level marketing scheme.

Phang was sentenced to nine years jail and fined $60,000 while Hoo was jailed for seven years.

Phang's wife Neo Kuon Huay, 47, who was found guilty of falsifying payment vouchers together with Phang, was fined $60,000. They did this so that she could receive commissions amounting to nearly $1 million.

Some 20,000 people bought into the flashy scheme, which promised high returns on its lifestyle packages.

Sunshine sold these packages at its plush Toa Payoh Central office for over 15 months, before it was raided by officers from the Commercial Affairs Department (CAD) in November 2007. The packages ranged from $240 to $12,000 and offered attractive bonuses and incentives.

What was unique was its customer rebate points (CRP) system, which allowed participants to use the points to buy goods online. Phang and Hoo had assured participants that CRP was derived from the firm's turnover on its e-commerce platform.

Like other Ponzi-like schemes, rewards for participants came from fresh money secured from those joining later.

From Straits Times, "Sunshine Empire pair jailed".

Flash floods (again): What A (Lousy) Feeling...

Yes. A continuous heavy rain since early this morning has led to yet another series of flash floods.

What a lousy feeling.

Sure there are jokers out there trying to spin a good humour on this unnatural-yet-natural incident (for example: "The Wave Song (With Lyric and Sing along) - MrBrown Show Production", check out the YouTube clip if you like to laugh on others' pain of losing business due to flash floods.)

Flash floods were reported over several low-lying areas in Singapore on Saturday.

Callers called MediaCorp Hotline, saying several low-lying shop houses along Changi Road and Telok Kurau were flooded.

Floods were also reported along Braddell Road, Bukit Timah and Chai Chee.

At Upper Thomson Road, Singapore Civil Defence Officers helped evacuate 20 passengers stranded from inside an SBS bus due to the flooding.

Several passengers also had to be evacuated from another bus along Bukit Timah Road.

MediaCorp understands several drivers were also stranded in their vehicles until Civil Defence officers arrived.

One caller said a fallen tree along Dorset Road caused heavy traffic congestion.

PUB earlier said heavy showers with thunder and gusty winds were expected over many areas in Singapore between 6am and 7am on Saturday.

Marina Bay Sands: Show me the money!! (and I'll use 2 lawsuits if necessary)

Like Jerry Maguire, someone in Marina Bay Sands might have shouted, "Show me the money!!"--albeit with the wrong amount of $$$.

I really don't get it: what Marina Bay Sands (MBS) was trying to do?! See, some lawyers' group were allegedly owing MBS $641,245.57. So one would have expected the lawsuit to contest that amount, right?

Wrong.

MBS chose to first sue for $300,000 and then followed by the second lawsuit to claim for the remaining amount.

I. Really. Do. Not. Get. It.

The lawyers (who represent MBS) surely would be the winners in this incredible legal battle.

MARINA Bay Sands has filed a second lawsuit against lawyers' group Inter Pacific Bar Association (IPBA) for not paying for their May conference.

The latest action comes even after MBS head honcho, Mr Sheldon Adelson, chairman and chief executive officer of its parent company Las Vegas Sands, has said that the casino wants to 'make love, not war' at the integrated resort's grand opening on June 23.

In this second suit filed on June 28, MBS is asking for full outstanding amount $641,245.57 owed, or $341,245.57 if it managed to claim the $300,000 it had sued for earlier on May 14.

The writ of summons for the second suit, however, has yet to be served, said IPBA spokesman.

MBS has up to six months to serve its writ, after which the suit will lapse.

The IPBA spokesman said he has met MBS on July 8 to discuss a settlement. No details were given on what the terms of settlement were, but MBS is supposed to respond to the offer by IPBA. But it has yet to do so.

From Straits Times, "MBS files 2nd lawsuit".

Miss Seoul Kim Juri in Miss World 2009 & Miss Universe 2010 (or why she should not participate in the latter event!)

Okay. Concentrate, peeps! So what does the news about the last year Miss Seoul Kim Joo-ri (or Kim Juri) to compete in Miss Universe 2010 after she battled in Miss World competition last year tell you?

First, she must be darn talented. (No argument there. She was the top 7 in that Miss World event!) Second, there is no other qualified contestant from Korea. The latter interpretation--if true--is sad, though.

Wasn't the title "Continental Queens of Beauty" in Miss World 2009 competition sufficient for her? It will be pleasant to read that she graciously declines the offer to join in Miss Universe 2010 contest.

Miss Korea Kim Joo-ri has a chance to become the next face of the international community when she competes in the upcoming Miss Universe 2010 in August, fans and media are speculating alike.

The 22-year-old has seen her fair share of fame over the last year, since she was crowned Miss Seoul 2009. A graduate of the Russian Bolshoi Ballet School, the trilingual Kim recently placed seventh in the 2009 Miss World Competition. In fact, she is the first representative from South Korea to participate in two of the four global beauty pageants (composed of the Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth contests).

Kim, who has lived abroad in both England and Russia, hopes to become either a ballerina or a diplomat _ following her idol, Audrey Hepburn _ in the future. Either way, the optimism emanating from the young lady is clear in her every action.

``I hope people don't give up on their dreams,’’ Kim told The Korea Times in an interview last year. ``I never thought I would come this far, but I have. If you really want to become Miss Korea, go for it and the same goes to everything else!’’

The 59th Miss Universe pageant will take place Aug. 23 in Las Vegas.

From Korea Times, "Kim Joo-ri to vie in Miss Universe 2010".

Jamie Yeo: (shotgun?) wedding & pregnancy

While the news is quite specific that Jamie Yeo is 14 weeks pregnant, it doesn't really say when the exact wedding was. Only 'recently' it vaguely mentioned as well as the hint of 'surprise' as the initial plan was the wedding with an Englishman Thorsten Nolte to be held this December.

Go figure (if you're that kaypoh). Whether it was a shotgun wedding or not, Jamie Yeo ought to be congratulated. After all, she has defied the 'historic low' fertility rate!

Television host Jamie Yeo is 14 weeks pregnant with a baby girl, reported The New Paper.

Yeo's ex-husband, MediaCorp deejay Glenn Ong, confirmed the pregnancy, saying the ESPN Star Sports presenter had sent him an SMS him on Monday to apologise for hurting him as well as to share the news of her pregnancy.

Yeo, 33, may be in for a high-risk pregnancy as she suffers from renal agenesis, a condition that caused her to be born with only one kidney and had affected her reproductive system.

Mr and Mrs Nolte

Yeo recently married Englishman Thorsten Nolte after accepting his proposal in April. They had originally planned to tie the knot in December.

She had revealed in blog entry earlier this year that Nolte, whom she met at The Prodigy concert in February 2009, had whisked her away to Japan in May, and proposed to her on her birthday with a 1.5-carat diamond he had specially prepared for the occasion.

Yeo was previously married to Ong, 39, until their high-profile separation in 2009. They were married for five years.

She was Ong's second wife after his first marriage to radio deejay Kate Reyes ended in 2003. Ong is currently seeing fellow Class 95FM deejay Jean Danker.

Incidentally, Yeo will also be Nolte's second wife. Nolte separated from his American spouse of two years just before he was posted to Singapore two and a half years ago.

Did the uncertain economy last year diminish Singaporeans' desire to have babies?

This could be a factor in the total fertility rate dipping from 1.28 in 2008, to a "historic low" of 1.22 last year, said the authorities in a population report released yesterday. The official number is even lower than the estimate of 1.23 cited by Government officials in recent months.

"The global recession in late 2008 could have contributed to the decline in births in 2009, although the impact was smaller compared to the past economic downturns," stated the Population in Brief 2010 report, jointly produced by government bodies that included the National Population Secretariat and the Singapore Department of Statistics.

Last year, 39,570 babies were born here, of which 31,842 had at least one parent who was a citizen - a dip of 1.8 per cent compared to 2008. Observers like Nominated Member of Parliament Calvin Cheng said the sharp dip could be an aberration. "A lot of statistics - economic and sociological - last year will throw up anomalies, because it was a year of anomalies," he said.

Mr Cheng, who has spoken about marriage in Parliament, said once the economy recovers, more people will be financially able to have babies.

Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Community Development Youth and Sports Seah Kian Peng said the fertility decline is probably due to multiple factors, of which the economy could be one.

But as Singapore recorded more marriages last year, he is hopeful that birth numbers will rise this year.

Mr Seah, who has requested for legally mandated paternity leave in Parliament, said "The incentives the government has been introducing … some will take a while before kicking in."

Should Singapore try adopting more measures found in Sweden - a developed country with a fertility rate of 1.94 last year?

Sociologist Eric Thompson said that policies like parental leave would be very helpful. But it is "unlikely" that they would cause an increase in the fertility rates. This is because fertility rates are related to "bigger issues" like the nature of one's economy, and highly competitive countries all face dipping birth rates, he said.

The population report also showed that while more Singaporeans are having their first babies, fewer are having more than one child compared with five years ago.

First births went up from 14,048 in 2004 to 14,628 in 2009, while second births decreased from 11,136 to 10,991, for instance. Mr Seah said this showed the importance of providing ample child care facilities, which the government is already working on.

From Today, "Fertility rates at 'historic low'".

Monty Python 'threat' in YouTube: "For 3 years you YouTubers have been ripping us off..."

LOL. The hilarious 'threat' from YouTube MontyPython's Channel:

I wish my father were like Dr Lim Hock Siew...

...who till now has been living to a 79-year-old. My father was 72 when he died. Even though I was never close to him--in fact to any of my family--I still feel that gnawing sense of loss. I'm bad at moving on.

Dr Lim Hock Siew: "...that there is judgement, there is justice".

"Did he say 'Justice'?"
"No. Just us."

(Hah! Can't resist to include that cute quote from "Yong Vui Kong: dead man waiting". Okay, they're not related issues.)

Dr Lim Hock Siew has recently made to the news about how his film (well, actually the film titled "Dr Lim Hock Siew" was by a filmmaker Martyn See Tong Ming, not by Dr Lim himself) was banned.

A quick check on the Net revealed that the 79-year-old Dr Lim Hock Siew was one of at least 111 anti-government left-wing activists who were arrested and detained under what is known as Operation Coldstore on 02 Feb 1963.

There was even a YouTube clip titled, "Ex-political prisoner speaks out in Singapore". It's said that Dr Lim Hock Siew was the 2nd longest-held political prisoner (He's released in 1982 and no, I have no idea who the 1st longest-held political prisoner was?!) The video has him making the his first post-detention speech during a book launch on 14 Nov 2009--which was nicely coincident to the arrival of US President Barack Obama in Singapore for APEC Summit.

The clip was posted on 15 Nov 2009 and so far has gathered only 44,616 views. In the end of the video it is said that it was shot and subtitled by Martyn See. I am not sure if this clip is the same film, "Dr Lim Hock Siew" which is reported to be banned. No, it may not be as the YouTube clip is merely about 22 minutes. It's hardly considered a film, is it?

The same YouTube clip was incidentally also featured in a popular Tan Kin Lian's Blog, "Dr. Lim Hock Siew speaks out" on 19 Nov 2009. Makes me wonder what the hell I blogged about during those Nov days???

While I do strongly disagree with what Dr Lim Hock Siew stated in the clip, I truly feel sorry about how tired he sounded & how fragile he seemed to be. If I ever live to 79, I just want to finally be at peace with myself & not to recall with bitterness about the painful past: whether I was right (or wrong), I should be wise enough to be able to forgive others (or my self).

Censors have banned the film "Dr Lim Hock Siew" by filmmaker Martyn See Tong Ming, with effect from July 14 under the Films Act, saying it is against 'public interest'.

A statement from the Information, Communications and the Arts Ministry said the film "gives a distorted and misleading portrayal of Dr Lim's arrests and detention under the Internal Security Act (ISA) in 1963."

It added that the government "will not allow individuals who have posed a security threat to Singapore's interests in the past, to use media platforms such as films to make baseless accusations against the authorities."

Neither will it allow such individuals to use films to give a false portrayal to exculpate their guilt, or undermine public confidence in the government.

The film, banned from July 14, has also not been granted a certificate for its exhibition.

Under the Films Act, possession and distribution of a prohibited film is an offence.

An offender is liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years, or both.

Last September, censors passed "Singapore Rebel," a film by the same filmmaker which features opposition figure Chee Soon Juan.

It passed with an M18 rating - four years after it was banned.

It became the first political film to make the cut after the Films Act was amended in March to relax the rules on such films.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Censors ban Martyn See's film on Dr Lim Hock Siew".

Update on 13/07: The latest news has mentioned that the film was also posted in YouTube (kind of wondering whether the earlier mention YouTube clip above was the very same with that mentioned in the following Today article). Straits Times also mentioned that the ban on the film will take effect on Wed (that is tomorrow, 14/07).

I guess the only way to tell whether the YouTube clip titled, "Ex-political prisoner speaks out in Singapore" is exactly the banned film is by checking whether the URL will still be valid tomorrow.

If the link is broken, the clip is indeed the banned film & thus whoever posted it on the YouTube would have taken it down (lest he/she accused to commit the offence of distributing the video.)

Let's see tomorrow... [Update on 14/07: okay, the URL only leads to www.youtube.com, ergo the clip is truly the banned film supposedly titled, "Dr Lim Hock Siew".]

The Government has banned the film Dr Lim Hock Siew by film-maker Martyn See, saying it was against "public interest" and "gives a distorted and misleading portrayal of Dr Lim's arrests and detention under the Internal Security Act in 1963".

A statement from the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts said the Government "will not allow individuals who have posed a security threat to Singapore's interests in the past to use media platforms such as films to make baseless accusations against the authorities".

Neither will such individuals be allowed to use films to give a false portrayal to exonerate themselves.

The decision comes after another See film, Singapore Rebel, was passed last September, four years after it was banned. Featuring opposition figure Chee Soon Juan, it was given an M18 rating - the first political film to make the cut after the rules on such films were relaxed.

Mr See told MediaCorp yesterday he had expected his new film, which features Dr Lim's speech at a book launch last November, to get the green light as Dr Lim had been interviewed by The Straits Times and the book, Fajar Generation, had been permitted for sale here. The book tells of the struggles in the 1950s and 1960s of the University of Malaya Socialist Club, of which Dr Lim was a member.

Mr See said he had also been asked to remove the YouTube video of the film, which he is "considering".

From Today, "Martyn See film banned".

THE Government has banned a video recording of a speech made by former political detainee Lim Hock Siew, because it is against public interest.

The video by filmmaker Martyn See, 41, gives a 'distorted and misleading portrayal' of Dr Lim's arrests and detention under the Internal Security Act in 1963, said the Ministry of Information, Communication and the Arts (Mica) in a statement on Monday.

Mica added: 'The Singapore Government will not allow individuals who have posed a security threat to Singapore's interests in the past, to use media platforms such as films to make baseless accusations against the authorities, give a false portrayal of their previous activities in order to exculpate their guilt, and undermine public confidence in the Government in the process.'

The prohibition of the film means it will be an offence for anyone to distribute the video, titled Dr Lim Hock Siew, or possess a copy of it.

And it takes effect on Wednesday.

Anyone who commits the offence can be fined up to $10,000 or jailed for a maximum term of two years, or given both sentences.

From Straits Times, "Ban on video recording".

Cut Tari admits (finally) that she's in Ariel Porn sex video

I'd have sympathised with her 'situation' more if only she's been honest from the very beginning. In the start of the scandal, Cut Tari (as well as Luna Maya) had "denied involvement in the sex tapes, saying the footage was doctored". That's not so. She caved in & confessed her being the star in one of the three videos which also featured the popular singer Ariel Peterpan.

She should have just said, 'Yes, that's me in the sex video!' & continued to play a victim. Now she's seen as a liar. And nobody cares to feel sorry for a liar.

I wonder how Luna Maya will react in the next few days: will she too follow suit Cut Tari's action & admit her 'involvement' in the sex videos? Or continue to deny that she's the one in the clips?

In any case, I agree Indonesian police should have focused the investigation more on the culprits which uploaded & distributed the sex videos.

The world is watching. (Uhm, not watching the sex videos. The case, I mean.) Even BBC News published a story about this sex scandal.

Gossip show presenter and model Cut Tari has finally admitted to being in one of three sex videos which have widely circulated through the Internet, after weeks of denial.

Her lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea said Friday her client had confessed to featuring in the video with boyband lead singer Nazriel "Ariel" Ilham. Tari, Ariel and another presenter Luna Maya, have been declared suspects in the video scandal.

"In the case file, we explain that she was in the video with the singer," Hotman said as quoted by kompas.com.

Hotman said the confession came only recently as his client did not want to preempt the police's investigation into the case.

"She [Tari] has been named a suspect since Monday. We did not publish it as we did want to move ahead of the police," he said.

The lawyer said her client was not aware she was being videotaped and who spread the video.

"She has never seen, kept and distributed the video. Men often videotape their love making using cellular phones," he said.

From Asiaone, "Cut Tari admits being in sex video". (10/07/10)

Cut Tari's mother has fallen ill following the involvement of her daughter in a sex tape with singer Nazriel Irham aka Ariel Peter Pan.

"[Cut Tari's]Mother has been sick since the video is circulating," Seno, a security officer at Cut Tari's home, said as quoted by kompas.com

Cut Tari finally admitted on Thursday that she was the one in the sex video with Ariel.

Police have declared her, Ariel and another actress Luna Maya suspects in the sex video scandal.

From Jakarta Post, "Cut Tari's mother fell ill after daughter sex scandal". (10/07/10)

THE police should shift the focus of their investigation into a sex video scandal from the popular singer and two actresses depicted in the videos to those who uploaded and disseminated the pornographic content, an expert says.

"They are supposed to focus their probe on finding those responsible for spreading the videos allegedly featuring singer Nazril 'Ariel' Ilham and TV presenters Luna Maya and Cut Tary," Eddy O. S. Hiariej, a law expert from Gadjah Mada University, told The Jakarta Post.

"The police have so far failed to arrest the video uploaders. The investigation into the case cannot be deemed a success if the video distributors still walk free," he said.

Days after the scandal broke out, the police and the Communications and Information Technology Ministry announced they had tracked down the source of the first uploads of the videos.

They were allegedly uploaded from several locations in West Java and Southeast Sulawesi, according to police chief detective Comr. Gen. Ito Sumardi. The police have yet to arrest any perpetrators.

They have, however, been detaining Ariel since June 22 for charges of intentionally making pornographic content. Ariel has not said he ever intended to spread the videos.

Detectives charged him with the 2008 Pornography Law, which carries a maximum punishment of 12 years in jail.

Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Marwoto Soeto said the police would again summon Luna Maya and Cut Tari on Monday for questioning and would later announce whether the two would be named suspects.

Ito has said detectives would declare the two suspects if they can find "appropriate" articles in either the Criminal Code or the Pornography Law with which to charge the duo.

Ito said a team of detectives was working on finding a legal way to charge Luna and Tari.

Eddy said Ito's statement was ridiculous. "If they have named Ariel a suspect, they can automatically also charge Luna and Cut Tari. Why should they need to find other articles?"

Eddy said Luna and Cut Tari could be proven culpable if the police noticed the two were clearly aware they were being filmed and did nothing to prevent it.

"However, I think the articles the police have used to charge Ariel are weak as they don't apply to those who make pornographic media for personal reasons," Eddy said.

From Asiaone, "Police should 'focus probe on video uploaders'". (07/07/10)

It is being called Indonesia's first ever celebrity sex scandal.

For the last few weeks, Indonesians have been captivated by an ongoing saga over X-rated videos that have appeared on the internet, allegedly featuring three of the country's most popular celebrities.

Pop star Nazril Irham (nicknamed Ariel) has denied any involvement, but has been charged under anti-pornography laws.

TV presenter Luna Maya and soapstar Cut Tari have also denied involvement in the sex tapes, saying the footage was doctored.

But the rate at which the videos have spread on the web has raised fears about the way Indonesians are using technology, even prompting the vice-president to voice concern about what the younger generation is doing online.

The scandal has stirred debate about attitudes to sex and internet regulation in the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Public protest

Celebrity sex scandals may be nothing new in some other countries, but in Indonesia it has got a lot of people very angry.

Demonstrations against the stars have been taking place since the videos appeared online.

At a rally organised by Hizb ut-Tahrir, a conservative Muslim group known for trying to push a strict Islamic agenda, men, women and young children held posters and waved banners in the searing heat.

The adults were frustrated by what they see as the moral deterioration of their society.

Many were young parents worried about the kind of place Indonesia is turning into, and what that means for their children.

Uzham Izhar, 32, had brought her two-year-old daughter.

"We want to live in an Indonesia that follows Islamic values," she said, as she patted her daughter asleep on her lap.

"Islamic law isn't just for Muslims, it's for the whole country.

"This kind of country is very dangerous, and it is particularly dangerous for my young daughter. I don't want her growing up in this kind of Indonesia."

Her concerns are being echoed by many who are worried that the younger generation's attitude to sex and morality is not in tune with Indonesia's cultural and religious heritage.

More than 80% of Indonesians are Muslim, and while it is a secular nation, most people are still largely conservative.

But that is changing, especially among young people who have access to information in a way their parents could never have dreamed of.

Censorship?

All of this has put the government under pressure.

Indonesia's Communications Ministry drafted a decree last year to regulate the internet but it was not pushed through because it was seen as unpopular with the public.

Now, the ministry is re-drafting the decree and says it will be in place by the end of the year.

Critics say officials are using this celebrity sex saga as an opportunity to re-introduce censorship in a country that has only recently become a democracy after three decades of authoritarian rule.

But Communications Ministry chief Basuki Yusuf says the claims are ridiculous.

"Democracy doesn't mean absolute freedom," he told the BBC in his office in central Jakarta.

"The internet is just technology. It has a good side and a bad side. We can't forget there is always a risk for the misuse and even the abuse of the internet - that it could violate our values and our future generations."

But the government seems to be out of step with Indonesia's young generation on this issue.

They resent the assumption that the only reason they are using the internet is to download pornographic material or access "immoral" content.

This is a country that is increasingly comfortable with technology.

In restaurants and cafes around Jakarta, it is not unusual to see teenagers and professionals browsing the web on their laptops, iPhones or Blackberries, and other gadgets.

There are more than 40 million internet users in Indonesia - and that number is growing fast.

Indonesian is the top Asian language on Facebook, and other local sites are also growing in popularity, which is why any clampdown on the internet is being met with stiff resistance from young people here.

Margareta Astaman is a 24-year-old blogger.

Her blog, Have a Sip of Margarita, has become so well-known that publishers have turned some of her entries about her daily life into a series of books.

She says the government is over-reacting to the celebrity sex scandal.

"We live in the internet, everything we do is on the internet, so limiting access will limit ourselves," she said, adding that it may have some negative effects in society but that the positive also needs to be recognised.

Here, as in other countries, the web has become a vital part of everyday life, especially for Indonesia's youth.

It is a forum for complaints about politicians, a place to chat and connect with friends and family, and a tool for expression.

The question this country is wrestling with is whether a new-found love of technology can co-exist with traditional values and religious beliefs.
