Singapore Mercantile Exchange (SMX) is here...and then?

Singapore Mercantile Exchange - Where the world trades

Learn more about the Singapore Mercantile Exchange or in short, SMX here. Quoted: "The Singapore Mercantile Exchange (SMX) is the first pan-Asian multi-product commodity and currency derivatives exchange. Situated in Singapore, SMX offers a comprehensive platform for trading a diversified basket of commodities including futures and options contracts on precious metals, base metals, agriculture commodities, energy, currencies and commodity indices."

A lot of words, huh? Still needs to learn more on how the trades are held.

The Singapore Mercantile Exchange (SMX) kicked off trading on Tuesday with a somewhat muted response from investors.

Observers said this could partly be due to a lack of awareness and that some are taking the wait-and-see approach.

However, the first pan-Asian commodity and currency derivatives exchange said it is still pleased with the first day of trade and expects volumes to grow with strong demand in months ahead.

It plans to roll out two new currency pairs on top of the four products that started trading on Tuesday.

Gold, the first product among others to be traded, proved the most popular. The exchange said it expects its gold contract to be a popular hedging tool among Asian traders.

And demand for such products is only set to grow.

Thomas McMahon, CEO, Singapore Mercantile Exchange, said: "How we get market participation - it's already here, the industry demand for hedging, risk mitigation or even commodities as an asset class, it already exists.

"It just doesn't exist on an Asian exchange, it's fragmented in its nature out here. It has legacy, which is good inherently. There's good trading volumes from Asia and they've only grown over the last 5 years dramatically."

Last year, the region saw 6.2 billion commodities contracts traded, versus 6.3 billion in both the US and Europe.

SMX said the demand is strong enough to grow its own volume, rather than compete for trade from other exchanges.

Analysts are optimistic about the options that SMX has to offer.

Avtar Sandu, manager, Asian Commodities, Phillip Futures, said: "Firstly, it's going to be an Asian contract, so you can have benchmarking during Asian time rather than you wait for London to open or New York to open before you can seal the deal.

"So if you have a benchmarking in Asia itself, at 5 o'clock, you can have a benchmark to price in your goods."

Observers added that this will offer more liquidity to investors in the Asian time zone.

The SMX said it hopes to sign 68 clearing, trading and broking members by the end of the year.

From Channel NewsAsia, "SMX goes live with 4 contracts; more to follow".

Naraharisetti Pavan Kumar, a New Singaporean with a curious reason on why he became a citizen

Reference to the article, "Avid shopper with eye for bargains" published in The Sunday Times today at page 14 (it's by the way about 'New Singaporeans', the focus on the article is about one Mr. Naraharisetti Pavan Kumar.

What tickles me the most is how he answered when he's asked why he became a Singapore citizen in 2006--quoted from that article:

"My family does not live in the city of my birth any more, and I've not been back there since I left for university at 17."

A practical reason, huh? The logic dictates that if his family still does live in the city of his birth, Mr. Kumar might have retained his Indian citizen.

But if he's really that tied to this city of his birth, should he not have made some visits there after he left for university?

Seriously, who else finds his reasoning, uhm, unconvincing?!

What, no second chance, huh, Second Chance?!

I'm intrigued. It's reported that a boss of Second Chance, Mr. Mohamed Salleh had banned himself & 6 of the top personnels from the 2 local casinos.

What is he to the 6 top personnels? A father? A family? Can he really do that? Seriously?! What the others do after their working hours have nothing to do with the company!! Who on earth does he think himself to put himself to that kind of 'Power'???

A Singapore company has banned its management from the country's two new casinos following reports a local businessman lost a fortune at the gaming tables, its founder said Friday.

Mohamed Salleh, chief executive officer of retail and property firm Second Chance, said he had applied for casino exclusion orders for himself and six of his top personnel using a system designed to keep gambling addicts out.

"A few days ago I read about this Henry Quek... that lost 26 million (19.2 million US) dollars at this casino, so I was thinking, why not I include all my top executives and my finance people?" he told AFP.

Media reports said Quek, a local seafood industry magnate, had squadered the amount over a three-day gambling spree at the Resorts World Sentosa casino.

Mohamed said his decision was also prompted by a case in which one of his managers stole gold items from the firm to pay off gambling debts before the local casinos opened the doors.

"It's better to be safe than sorry," said Mohamed.

Financial group DBS said Thursday that Singapore's two casino resorts are expected to contribute two billion Singapore dollars (1.5 billion US) to the country's economy this year.

After church and civic groups raised concern over the social impact of legalising casinos, Singapore is allowing individuals or their families to apply for exclusion orders on "problem gamblers" barring them from even entering the casinos.

From Yahoo! Singapore Finance, "Singapore company bars top management from local casinos".

OMG the show belongs to nobody but J.M.T. (Jill Marie Thomas)!

I must admit, though, that it's a cruel choice of Jill Marie Thomas (or J.M.T. like in her YouTube clip, "Nobody (Wondergirls) - J.M.T.") to challenge the fellow challenger of the night, Dan Thompson (who started the show for tonight by challenging--and beating--the contender from the previous week, Jumping Jewels.)

She should have challenged others (and for sure, she would have easily won, too).

Dan Thompson's performance was sparkling. It was a treat to see him performing the two songs: "You Raise Me Up" as he challenged Jumping Jewels and "Me and Mrs. Jones" as he's being challenged by J.M.T.

A pity that he's ousted.

Darn.

But J.M.T.'s rendition of Wondergirls' Nobody is just cool. Simply a wonder girl! (You truly deserve to win!) She did manage to make it her own original song effortlessly. No fancy dance. Nada. Just her & her guitar.

Just like in her YouTube clip below.

Yes, as per the screenshot above, she'll be performing on 26/09/10 8 PM at the 15 Minutes Cafe (La Salle College of Arts).

No thanks to ladyironchef, the famous blog "ieatishootipost" to be renamed as ieatIPAYishootipost???

The recent shameful furore on a certain food blogger by the pseudonym of ladyironchef has led me to know another more popular & definitely more credible food blogger. His blog address is "ieatishootipost.sg". The curious me soon pay a visit to this website--all along wondering whether he will soon change his website to "ieatIPAYishootipost.sg". Heh.

By the way, the author of "ieatishootipost.sg" is one Dr. Leslie Tay. Now that's what I'd say as a PROFESSIONAL! Even inSing.com credits him as an expert in food and drink.

So I guess there's no need for him to change his blog to "ieatIPAYishootipost.sg", huh? Hur hur.

Post Script:
I just realised I did take a photo of Dr. Leslie Tay in the HungryGoWhere.com Big Eat Out! on 22/11/08. Even blogged about the event. The pic of him is shown under item no.4.

A 20-year-old girl put in a coffin for 3 hours (Singapore's real-life version of the horror movie, The Coffin?)

Reading about how a 20-year-old girl was put in a golden coffin for 3 hours in a cemetary in--yes, you read it right!--Singapore just led me to think of this horror movie, The Coffin. (The show is by the way about a Thai ritual of lying in a coffin, which is supposed to ensure long life and rid people of their bad luck. But things turn out worse. Well, it's a horror film after all. The YouTube clip is here. Karen Mok is good at acting jumpy. Heh.)

Seriously though, I am not entirely sure whether parents are allowed to that to their child. See, the case here is that the girl was believed to be under a spell. Tragic. In the cold concrete jungles of Singapore, the dark arts are still thriving, huh?

Sin Chew Daily reported that a girl, believed to be under a spell, was dressed in a red costume and put in a golden coffin for three hours in a cemetery in Singapore.

The parents spent $30,000 for the entire "funeral" to get rid of the "spell", it said.

The 20-year-old student underwent the ceremony after her character changed few months earlier and she could not even recognise her own parents.

Her family believed that she was under a spell.

From Asiaone, "Girl put in coffin for 3 hours in S'pore cemetery".

Ebiet G. Ade - Berita Kepada Kawan (A Letter to a Friend)

Attempted to translate a wonderful lyric of Ebiet G. Ade's song, "Berita Kepada Kawan". Check out the fantastic classic here.

This trip is truly heartbreaking
Pity that you're not right beside me, Dear Friend
There are a lot of tales to be witnessed
In this dry, dying stony Land

My body is shaken by the road
My heart by the sight of the dying grass
The journey is seemingly like a witness
To the cry of a little shepherd boy

Dear Friend, try to listen to the answer
As I ask on his cries, "Why?"
Both his parents have long departed
Victims to the cruel disaster of the Land

When I reach to the sea, I'll tell them all
To the cliff, to the waves, and to the Sun
But all stay still, but all stay silent
Just me alone looking up to the sky

Perhaps there the answer I shall find
Of why the disaster hit my Land
Perhaps God starts to be sick of us
Who are always untrue; yet proud of our sins
Or Nature--reluctant to befriend us anymore?
Well, let's just ask those dying grass

The original text in Bahasa Indonesia:

Perjalanan ini terasa sangat menyedihkan
Sayang, engkau tak duduk di sampingku, kawan
Banyak cerita yang mestinya kau saksikan
di tanah kering berbatuan

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

Tubuhku terguncang di hempas batu jalanan
Hati tergetar menampak kering rerumputan
Perjalanan ini pun seperti jadi saksi
gembala kecil menangis sedih ho ho ho ho

Kawan coba dengar apa jawabnya
ketika ia kutanya "Mengapa?"
Bapak ibunya telah lama mati
ditelan bencana tanah ini

Sesampainya di laut kukabarkan semuanya
kepada karang, kepada ombak, kepada matahari
tetapi semua diam, tetapi semua bisu
Tinggal aku sendiri terpaku menatap langit

Barangkali di sana ada jawabnya
mengapa di tanahku terjadi bencana
Mungkin Tuhan mulai bosan melihat tingkah kita
yang selalu salah dan bangga dengan dosa-dosa
atau alam mulai enggan bersahabat dengan kita
Coba kita bertanya pada rumput yang bergoyang

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

Kawan coba dengar apa jawabnya
ketika ia ku tanya "Mengapa?"
Bapak ibunya telah lama mati
ditelan bencana tanah ini

Sesampainya di laut kukabarkan semuanya
kepada karang, kepada ombak, kepada matahari
tetapi semua diam, tetapi semua bisu
Tinggal aku sendiri terpaku menatap langit

Barangkali di sana ada jawabnya
mengapa di tanahku terjadi bencana
Mungkin Tuhan mulai bosan melihat tingkah kita
yang selalu salah dan bangga dengan dosa-dosa
atau alam mulai enggan bersahabat dengan kita
Coba kita bertanya pada rumput yang bergoyang

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho

PS. 'ho ho ho' are definitely NOT a laughter.

Why the condemned ladyironchef blog is suspended (4 top speculations)

ladyironchef: I find joy in making people hungry angry

The above picture is taken from the webcache of the now-suspended blog of ladyironchef. There have been speculations on why the suspension of the account of this blogger, ladyironchef (who is by the way a he, but you can't tell with that silly moniker which wss likely inspired by what, another silly movie, "The Lady Iron Chef"?!).

Here are the four top speculations.

First is that the blogger is just simply disgusting. Even to the host of his blog who therefore might have suspended the blogger's account. He was reported--much to the shame of the community of food bloggers--to demands free meal in exchange of a lousy review. (The name of the bullied eatery is Private Affairs--the irony doesn't escape me on how this affair was not altogether settled in private! Hur hur.)

Second, the blogger ladyironchef is just a miserable, penniless lad. He couldn't afford to pay the hosting fee of his website & thus, the account was suspended. This probable reason does make sense. He was after all not having money to even do an independent, sponsorless review on the eatery.

Third, the angry netizens had been flaming the ladyironchef's blog and the torrent of abuse was simply just too much for the website.

Fourth, a criminal investigation may (well, we never know) be ongoing & as part of the investigation the blog needs to be suspended. I'm not surprised if that's the case. His act was truly abusive & I'm genuinely surprised that the chef of Private Affairs did not chop chop him.

Anyway, we'll not know what the true reason is. Not at the moment, for sure.

A young food blogger who demanded that he and his three companions be given free meals at an upscale restaurant in the Joo Chiat area has sparked a huge furore online.

The group of four had walked into Private Affairs, a small but exclusive eatery in Joo Chiat, for its Sunday champagne brunch promotion that costs S$68++ per person.

The blogger in question, Brad Lau, who runs a food blog called ladyironchef, had informed the management on Friday that he would be coming down to review the Sunday Brunch promotion.

On the day itself, he and his partner came down at about 130pm, followed by his two other companions, each of whom came down half an hour apart.

According to Private Affairs’ operations director Ross Valentine, the four of them had brunch until 430pm, even when the restaurant’s official brunch hours was from 1130 am to 330pm. Brad and his partner also enjoyed two glasses of champagne each.

When presented with the final bill of $435, the blogger initially refused to pay and repeatedly told the restaurant’s chef, “I never pay for food in any restaurant.”

The restaurant eventually offered to waive off the cost of the meal for him and his partner as well as the cost of the champagne out of goodwill, thus lowering the bill to $159.

Still upset but finally relenting to pay, the blogger then threw his credit card onto the bar counter in front of the cashier before storming out.

Valentine told Yahoo! Singapore, ”This blogger looked very aggressive and was quite arrogant. The fact that he also walked in with his friends at staggered timings created quite a bit of problems for my chef de cuisine, who has to prepare and present his food at just the right times.”

“We decided to waive off the meal and champagne cost for him and his partner out of goodwill. But when we asked him when the review of the meal would be coming out, he said he was not obliged to write anything if the food wasn’t good enough,” he added.

Yahoo! Singapore emailed Brad Lau for his reaction but he has yet to a reply.

The incident, however, has enraged the local food blogging community.

Glenn Lee, who runs popular food blog Hungryepicurean.com since late last year, posted an open letter criticising the blogger’s behaviour for “tarnishing the good name of the community.”

Lee, 22, told Yahoo! Singapore, “We are food bloggers and I’m pretty sure the intentions of all of us in the community is to share the love that we have for food and writing.”

“But what this certain blogger has done is highly detrimental to the integrity of the community as a whole and I felt the need to stand up for what I strongly believe in,” he said.

Kaelyn Ong, 22, who posted an entry entitled ”STOP asking for free food” on her food blog, My Food Sirens II, also expressed her disgust.

“I’m surprised. It’s beyond my understanding how someone can actually request for a free meal on the house just because he’s a food blogger,” she told Yahoo! Singapore.

“Anyone can be a food blogger these days, all it takes is a camera and a blog… does that mean restaurants have to sponsor everyone for their meals?” she added.

She also apologised to restaurants on behalf of the food blogging community and said ”not all of us are such bad eggs”.

Cheryl Chia, who has a food and baking blog, cocoabutterscotch, was also appalled.

“I find it shameful. Demanding for free food on account of your supposed “status” as a person who blogs about food is not acceptable,” the 26-year-old said.

Renowned food expert KF Seetoh, who runs the popular makansutra.com, said the blogger in question lost his integrity by refusing to pay.

“The best position is to be invisible, pay for your own food. When you pay for your own food, you don’t take any prisoners when you write,” he said.

But what if the restaurant offers to give bloggers a free meal?

“Then I won’t write about your restaurant. Even if they offer me 50% off the total bill, and if I write about it, they will take my review with a 50% pinch of salt. Some of them, after eating, they call the chef out and ask him to change this and that on the menu. Some would then say, let me do a consultancy role for you. You do what I say and I write nice things.

“My stand is, be neutral. I pay, I say and then I rate,” he concluded.

**Since this post was first published at close to 130pm, Brad Lau’s blog, ladyironchef, has been suspended. Attempts to contact the blogger have still proven unsuccessful.

Liar Game: The Final Stage (Why must it only featured in Golden Village?!)

Liar Game: The Final Stage

Yes. Groan. Why must this movie, "Liar Game: The Final Stage" featured in only Golden Village??? Even only 4 of the GV cinemas, namely at GV VivoCity, GV Plaza, GV Marina, and GV Tampines.

I swear that I will never watch any movie at Golden Village (here's why if you're so busybody about it). Then again, I want to watch this movie!!

Oh well, another option is to wait for its DVD release.

The Hunt for Gollum - the exciting (unofficial) prequel to The Lord of The Rings

The Lord of the Ring fans have rejoiced. At least total of 4,601,681 viewers have enjoyed this unofficial prequel to The Lord of the Rings dramatising Aragorn & Gandalf's long search for Gollum. The duration of the movie is quite decent--40 minutes & it's unbelievable that it only cost $5,000. Watch this free show, "The Hunt for Gollum" & enjoy it.

Riverpoint Clarke Quay sponsored this post?! I wish...

Ha. This is getting too predictable. Coming soon "The Hooters sponsored this post?!" Hur hur. Right...

To continue to this post, this shot was taken in a rather squatting position (I acted like a tourist, so yes, the action is excusable) & in a rather prolong manner as I was waiting for the boat to pass across the chains in a certain angle.

Prudential "We Listen" sponsored this post?! I wish...

Still hovering around Central, I managed to get this shot. Employing the 'waiting' technique as mentioned in the previous post.

HSBC sponsored this post?! I wish...

I happened to read an article about tips on being a good photographer. One of the them is about how a photographer must have a strong bladder as he/she will often need to wait till all the pieces just fall nicely to the setting.

Put it in practice, I chanced this nice mosaic wall just right HSBC near Central (opposite of Clarke Quay). It was a quiet weekday & I wish there's somebody just passed by in front of the wall. The wait was not that long, luckily. And I got the shot I intended to have!

(And no, this post is--sadly--not sponsored by HSBC aka The World's Local Bank.)

Green Manor: Assassins and Gentlemen, The Inconvenience of Being Dead

Currently enjoying Green Manor Part 1: Assassins and Gentlemen. Looking forward to Green Manor Part 2: The Inconvenience of Being Dead.

Cinebook the publisher has this to say on Green Manor: "Impossible investigations, perfect crimes, a “série noire” whose plot draws the reader into the mystery!"

Sesame Street Ernie & Bert are Gay?!?!

Ha! No, they're not. Ernie & Bert are just puppets! Still it's quite amusing to watch this clip, "Gay protest signs (funny)".

My other favorite gay protest sign is at 2:06 clip stated, "If God hates fags, why are we so cute?"

Solved: What Caused the Fell of Vernon Leong

So the mystery has finally solved? A follow up post on, "Kerin Peh & Vernon Leong: 'Til Death Do Us Unite", the answer to the puzzle of what happened to Vernon Leong who mysteriously fell to his death at the Hilton Hotel on the night of their wedding last November.

Besides the inevitable gravity, it's concluded that alcohol has played its dirty hand in this case.

Here's to a long life and a merry one
A quick death and an easy one
A pretty girl and an honest one
A cold beer and another one!

~Author Unknown

COMPUTER shop owner Vernon Leong Jun Wei was was drunk and disoriented when he fell off a fourth-floor rootfop of the Hilton Singapore hotel on his wedding night in November last year, a coroner's court ruled on Wednesday.

He had a mixture of red wine, beer and hard liquor in his blood, and this probably disoriented his senses.

State Coroner Victor Yeo ruled his death a misadventure. The coroner said evidence and closed circuit television footage showed that Mr Leong, 31, got lost in the hotel's fire exit stairway after celebrating his wedding dinner in the hotel's ballroom.

The rooftop lights had been switched off after midnight and the coroner said Mr Leong would have stumbled in the dark and accidentally fallen some 13m to his death. The court heard that the rooftop had no railings, just a 17cm-high ledge that was 13cm wide. The coroner noted that it was clear that Mr Leong was tired and feeling the effects of the liquor.

Forensic pathologist Teo Eng Swee indicated in the investigation report that the alcohol in Mr Leong's body was 161/100ml. At that level - which is double the legal limit - a person is likely to display signs of drunkenness that include nausea, slurred speech, confusion and impaired judgement, Dr Teo added.

The inquiry also heard that Mr Leong's bride Kerin Peh Li Ling, 28, had called hotel reception at about 3.15am on Nov 4 to say that her husband was missing from the room and that he was drunk. She was told hotel security officers would look for him but they found him dead on the driveway in front of the Orchard Road hotel.

Ms Peh fell to her death last month.

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume III: Century

Fantastic auction at Ebay. Current bid: US $0.99. But it will cost $5.00 for US Postal Service Parcel Post. Darn.

Oh well, I can't wait to have this graphic novel, "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Volume III: Century". But I will definitely not that impatient as to pay more for the postal fee. Heh.

Dating cost subsidised up to S$500?!

That's what this Malaysian news portal The Star Online, "Go on a date and get RM1,166" said about how:

When the tight-fisted government gives away anything resembling free money, people here sit up.

In an effort to encourage 75,000 singles to wed, it is subsidising 90% of their dating costs worth some S$500 (RM1,166) each.

The state’s matchmakers, who began operation in 1984, are doing this for a crucial objective – to raise matrimonial rates.

At the same time, a government campaign will be launched to get singles between 20 and 35 years to actively expand their social circle to find life partners, even using a dating agency.

This follows revelation that a disturbingly high proportion of young men and women in Singapore are staying out of wedlock.

That's rather sad, don't you think. To have a government to spend such money for things to that should have handled by the individuals themselves.

Singapore Police Force sue Stomper Woo for defamation?

I don't know about you but to me, the statement of Stomper Woo sounds very much a defamation.

Partially quoted from Stomp, "Part 2 of couple making out on S'pore flag: Police report made but cops can't be bothered":
"To my disappointment, the police didn't show much concern for the misuse of our national flag."

Stomper Woo must have neglected to realise how much works Singapore Police Force are handling. Just pay a quick visit to the website, "Singapore Police Force" & you'll read about how a serial housebreaker arrested, 3 youth loanshark runners to be charged, a snatch thief arrested and a taxi robber arrested, to mention some.

C'mon. Get real. Do not expect Singapore Police Force to do everything. What you needed to do, instead, Stomper Woo was to advise the young couple. Immediately. On the spot.

Start a love train (Come on, SMRT!)

The latest lament on STOMP, "Children stare as couple makes out and kisses on MRT" real irks me. The stomper whined:

"This couple was hugging and kissing in the train.

"The passengers were staring yet they continued making out.

"They didn't care that there were children around.

"People were staring at their indecent act and were shaking their heads."

And all he/she can do was taking two sneak shots of the couple & posted them on STOMP. Real mature, stomper. If giving a right message to presumably innocent children is what you care about, you should have stopped the lovey-dovey couple immediately as their PDA (Public Display of Affection) was in progress.

Posting & whining on STOMP would do nothing to remedy the situation. Why not trying to petition SMRT to arrange an exclusive love train where it's mandatory for its passengers to publicly display their affection.

PS. The title of this article is inspired by a song, "Love Train".

Chunkfest 2010 by Ben & Jerry's at Promontory@Marina Bay

12 exclusive flavours of the ice cream will be especially flown in for this event. A trivia: This hopefully an annual event, Chunkfest started in year 2008. This year Chunkfest to be held on 04 Sept at Promontory, Marina Bay from 2:30 PM to 11 PM.

What I don't get is that if these 12 flavours are new, shouldn't one try each of the unique ice cream first prior to casting one's vote?

Oh well, beside indulging yourself in ice cream (yes, you still have to pay, though. What do you expect?!), you can also vote which bands shall perform.

There are altogether 6 bands of which three are confirmed to perform: 53A, Jack & Rai, and Tabula.

The other 3 bands shall be chosen from your votes on these 6 bands: Leeson, Life In Colour, Plainsunset, The Goodboys, and The Marilyns.

Only the first 20 teams to register for the Vermonster Challenge will qualify. On the day of the event, teams will have to register their attendance at our booth before 4pm. Teams who do not turn up will be disqualified and available spots will be open to the public.")

I'm seriously considering to attend this event. And to pay a tribute to someone who first introduced me to Ben & Jerry's. Life's delicious; hope in the next life you get to enjoy a more variety and rich taste of Ben & Jerry's.

Hippie Hooray! Can you feel it? Can you hear it? Can you taste the excitement that’s coming your way? Right behind the curtain, we are buzzing like bees as Chunk Fest sets to take on centre-stage once again.

Leanna Archer: I am a 14-year-old CEO, hear me roar!

I just read through her official website, "Leanna Archer". And I find it amazing especially on her long list of accomplishments. Especially as she's just 14 years old! (Okay, so I'm perhaps a bit ageist.)

LEANNA Archer started her own hair care business when she was just nine years old.

Today, at 14, she is the CEO of her company Leanna Inc, that grosses over US$600,000 (S$808,000) a year.

Leanna is a successful young entrepreneur, and also a champion.

She is one of 12 young speakers, who will be sharing their success stories at the 'What Makes a Young Champion' 2010 Forum organised by the National University of Singapore.

The two-day event is held in conjunction with the upcoming Youth Olympic Games.

Other invited speakers include 26-year-old local filmmaker Anthony Chen, 17-year-old paralympic swimmer Yip Pin Xiu and 18-year-old British chocolatier Louis Barnett.

From Straits Times, "14-year-old CEO".

Partially quoted:
Fourteen-year-old entrepreneur Leanna Archer from Long Island amazes the world with her ambition and fight for her platform in the business world. CEO of Leanna Inc., Archer sells a whole host of hair care and body products, beginning with her family’s secret concoction passed down from her great grandmother, Lea Lebon.

Archer said that the curiosity sprang up when she was either 7 or 8 years old and she remembers always being asked what she used in her hair. She realized that she never had a response, so Archer decided to search for the answer.

Easy money (?): SBS compensates woman $82k after she is thrown off her seat

What impressed me most is how the incident which took place in April 2004 was only reported (for a legal battle) in 2007 and how it was only resolved only in May this year.

By the way, it's the same Miss Khek Ching Ching who has been banned from entering NTUC outlets 2 years ago--she and her sister, Miss Khek See See.

SHE claimed that she was thrown off her seat in a bus when the driver braked suddenly.

For that, Miss Khek Ching Ching, 43, took SBS Transit to court, claiming that her injuries from the incident caused her to have difficulty walking.

In May, District Judge Leslie Chew ruled in her favour and awarded her about $82,000 in compensation.

He found that the bus driver had been negligent and was liable for Miss Khek's initial injuries.

The unemployed woman claimed she suffered a sprained ankle and tenderness in her chest.

Although she recovered from the injuries, she said she later developed a more serious medical condition known as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).

Her walking difficulty affected her mobility so badly that she needed to use a wheelchair or be assisted by her elder sister, she claimed.

Judge Chew found that the incident led to her developing CRPS - a chronic condition in which patients experience continuous, intense pain, usually in the limbs, and worsening over time - and that the bus company was liable for that.

The court was told that the incident happened on April 28, 2004.

Miss Khek testified that she had been seated opposite her sister in a four-seater seat on Service 372.

The bus was travelling along Compassvale Drive when the driver suddenly slammed hard on the brakes while approaching a traffic light.

The impact caused her to be thrown off her seat. She lurched forward and hit her sister's knees.

She suffered tenderness on her chest, wrists, right ankle, right shoulder, and swelling and tenderness on her left ankle.

Miss Khek told the court that she did not inform the driver,Mr Yeo Hang Meng, immediately after the incident because she was "fearful of a bus driver who had driven in such (an) unsafe manner".

In its defence, SBS Transit denied the incident had happened and that it was something that Miss Khek had made up.

When he took the stand, Mr Yeo said he could not recall the incident and that he came to know about it only when he was called up by his employer following Miss Khek's complaint.

But Mr Yeo admitted in court that he later received a police warning over it.

Credibility

The defence also attacked Miss Khek's credibility, telling the court that she was known to be a difficult customer who had lodged many complaints against other companies, such as supermarkets and departmental stores.

To bolster its case, the company called several witnesses from these organisations to testify how she had been unreasonable in her dealings with them.

In cross-examining Miss Khek, SBS Transit's lawyer, Mr Anthony Wee, took her through "voluminous documents which appeared to have documented her various complaints against different parties".

Mr Wee also argued that even if the incident did take place, her injuries - both the initial injuries and the CRPS - were a result of her pre-existing injuries and not a result of the incident.

The court was told that Miss Khek had been injured on two previous occasions. The first was on June 6, 2002, when her right ankle was bruised after her foot was caught by the closing doors of a bus she was travelling on.

Then, on July 9, 2002, she sprained her right knee after knocking it because a bus she was travelling on had"suddenly braked". Although Miss Khek won the suit, she is unhappy with the amount awarded and is appealing.

When The New Paper visited the Khek sisters at their one-room rental flat at Chin Swee Road on Tuesday, they did not allow us in.

We spoke to them through the gate as they sat on two chairs in the living room. Miss Khek said that after the incident, she was unable to work.

Pointing to a wheelchair, she said: "I use that. My(left) leg hurts and I have to limp. The pain is continuous.

"It's like a burning pain; sometimes it's like an electric shock and I can't control the nerves."

When asked if she was working, her sister, 47, said: "I also can't work. I have to take care of my sister.

"She can't walk without me helping her and I have to bathe her, help her to the toilet. I'm her sole support."

So who is supporting them financially? Miss Khek's sister, who did not want to give her name, replied: "It's irrelevant, right? You don't need to know."

Miss Khek had asked the court to be compensated for her loss of earning capacity and her loss of future earnings as a result of the incident.

But the judge said there was no basis to do so. This was because the sisters' paper doll-making business had been losing money in the two years before the incident.

Even when the business was wound up in 2007, it continued to record a loss of almost $13,000.

Many times during the interview, Miss Khek's sister would jump in and answer the questions for her.

"I was the one who handled all the documents, you can ask me," her sister said.

On why Miss Khek decided to sue SBS Transit, her sister said Miss Khek had sought medical treatment after the incident and complained to the bus company the next day.

She added: "When we finally met up with them more than a month later, we were told to make a police report."

They were eventually offered $3,500 in compensation, she said, adding: "But that was not enough. My sister needs long-term treatment."

No improvement

Three years after the incident, her condition showed no improvement, Miss Khek said, so she filed the suit in 2007.

She said she has never left home without her sister since the incident.

The sisters, who spoke in fluent English and Mandarin, did not want their photographs taken - for privacy reasons.

Miss Khek's lawyer, Mr Syed Ahmed Chisty, is discharging himself and will not be representing her in her appeal.

From Asiaone, "Hardbraking costs SBS $82,000".

Her litany of complaints over the years is long and extensive.

Whether it's bus companies, supermarkets, department stores or her neighbours, she has complained about them all.

So much so that two years ago NTUC FairPrice took the unusual step of banning her and her elder sister from all its outlets to protect its staff and other customers. This emerged during a 17-day trial in which Miss Khek Ching Ching, 43, sued bus company SBS Transit.

Yesterday, The New Paper reported that in May, District Judge Leslie Chew found the bus driver to be negligent and liable for her injuries suffered as a result of the incident on April 28, 2004.

Miss Khek claimed that she was thrown off her seat and hit the knees of her sister, who was seated opposite her, when the bus driver braked suddenly.

The court was told that Miss Khek and her sister, See See, 47, both unemployed, were known to be difficult customers.

Evidence of their history of complaints against various companies was put forward by SBS Transit's lawyer, Mr Anthony Wee, to support his client's argument that Miss Khek had"simply invented" the accident.

The defence described her as someone who "has a history of lodging complaints against third parties for economic and/or other gains".

Several witnesses testified about how in their dealings with Miss Khek, "she had behaved, from their perspective, unreasonably, complaining about various incidents".

Judge Chew noted that the "strongest suggestion of the 'unreasonableness' of (Miss Khek) and to a lesser extent her sister" was the fact that NTUC FairPrice had classified Miss Khek as "persona non grata" (an unwelcome person).

Yet, in a two-hour interview with The New Paper, the sisters emphasised repeatedly that they were friendly and had no problems with people.

Still, there was no denying that their relationship with the supermarket chain was strained.

The court heard that from April 2007 to October 2008, the sisters lodged 19 complaints with NTUC Fair- Price about various issues.

These included gripes about customer service, poor quality of products and even about injuries caused to them by the staff or third parties at the outlets.

A NTUC FairPrice staff member testified that each complaint of theirs was taken seriously.

The sisters would be refunded money or allowed to exchange products they had bought even though it meant that NTUC FairPrice had to deviate from its standard exchange and refund policy.

Under the policy, the goods had to be defective and the goods and receipt produced no later than 15 days from the date of purchase.

On some occasions when a refund or exchange could not be given, the sisters would be given gift vouchers instead.

The company said it also took action, including counselling, against the staff members whom the sisters had accused of poor service.

Last Straw

But one incident the Kheks griped about was "the last straw" forNTUCFairPrice.

The company found the complaint "frivolous and vexatious" and said it "amounted to an abuse of (the) goodwillshown tothem" in their earlier complaints.

The court heard that on Aug 8, 2008, the sisters were at the Tiong Bahru Plaza store to return a bag of potatoes they claimed wasof very poor quality. At the store, they got into a dispute with two other customers.

Miss Khek See See alleged that one of the customers had"knocked into" her younger sister'sabdomen, causing her "to feel discomfort". She showed a staffmember a photo of the latter's surgicalwoundon the abdomen. But she "became agitated when asked to give more details" of the alleged injury. The customers also denied knocking into either sister.

When she claimed that her younger sister was about to faint, a staff immediately got her a chair from the office.

And upon her insistence, an ambulance was called to take Miss Khek to hospital. The police were also alerted.

The sisters later lodged a complaint about the incident. After investigating, NTUC FairPrice decided to ban the sisters from all its stores.

The court heard that on Oct 9, 2008, a notice was sent to the sisters informing them of the ban. NTUC FairPrice also warned them that legal action would be taken against them "if they set foot in any of our supermarkets island wide".

The supermarket chain had found that the sisters "were being unreasonable to the extent of harassing our staff and became a nuisance to other patrons", the court heard.

"They also caused our staff to suffer from mental anxieties and distress in dealing with them." The sisters appealed to a member of parliament to help overturn the ban but NTUC FairPrice stood firm. The ban remains to this day.

Two years before that, the sisters had complained about Yue Hwa emporiumin Chinatown. They had been walking along an aisle in the emporium in October 2006 when Miss Khek said she tripped on a raised metal strip on the floor.

She had just come from an acupuncture session and was shopping with her sister then.

The sisters claimed that this aggravated an existing swelling in one of her legs and demanded compensation of close to $10,000. The emporium eventually paid them about $6,000. Pointing to these incidents, Mr Wee told the court that Miss Khek "ought to be considered as someone who was unreasonable, making unreasonable complaints frequently, often exaggerating claims and complaints".

The Khek sisters should not be allowed to "run rings around unsuspecting retailers and service providers and be allowed to benefit and unjustly enrich themselves by filing frivolous complaints", the court was told.

The court heard that Miss Khek had also been injured on buses on two occasions in 2002.

The first was on June 6 that year when her right ankle was bruised after her foot was caught by the closing doors of a bus she was travelling on.

Then, about a month later, she sprained her right knee after knocking it because a bus she was travelling on had suddenly braked.

In 2004, she said she was again injured when the driver suddenly braked. This time, she sued SBS Transit - albeit three years later.

Judge Chew found in her favour and awarded her about $82,000 in compensation. Even then, she is unhappy with the amount and is appealing.

From Asiaone, "'Frivolous' complaint put sisters on ban list".

So give me Coffee and TV...

Man, it does seem like a history. This song, Coffee and TV is what made me hooked to music videos. This music video of the song, Coffee and TV, featured a cute milk cartoon in his quest to find the Owners' missing son aka one member of the band, Blur. Heh.

I love how the lyric that can seem to be a non sequitur. Like this part:
Sociability
It's hard enough for me
Take me away from this big bad world
And agree to marry me
So we can start all over again

And 'agree to marry me' is what follows to 'Take me away from this big bad world'? I like how dazzlingly 'it-does-not-follow-logically' the statement is.

Keppel Nights 2010

Keppel Nights. The word that comes to my mind is 'knights'. Never mind.

Do check out the official website, "Keppel Nights - Cultivating Audiences for the Arts" and the show listings here.

An overview on "Keppel Nights":
Keppel Nights, a partnership between Keppel Corporation and the Arts and Culture Development Office, is Singapore’s first sustainable ticket incentive scheme for ticketed arts and culture shows.

The scheme aims to develop new and active audiences by making the appreciation and enjoyment of arts and culture more financially accessible.

Launched in August 2008, the scheme has offered ticket subsidies to a wide variety of shows on most weekends as well as some weekdays throughout the year.

Keppel Corporation and the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts have unveiled plans for an enhanced Keppel Nights scheme.

It will offer more opportunities to enjoy the arts for first-time goers and those who cannot afford the full price ticket.

The scheme also includes ticketed exhibitions in addition to performing acts.

For those who have experienced the scheme, they'll get the Mad-About-Arts card which will give them a ten-per cent discount on future ticket purchases staged by organisers under the Keppel Nights scheme.

For individuals who are passionate about the arts, they are invited to become Arts Kakis where they will encourage beneficiaries under Keppel's scheme to attend these performances.

Since the launch of the scheme in 2008, it has supported about 150 shows offering 12,500 subsidised tickets and benefiting more than 11,000 people.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Keppel Nights scheme offers S'poreans more opportunities to enjoy the arts".

X Ah Long hotline 1800-9245664

Hope to read by the end of the 1-year trial on how many successful cases of loansharks being caught thanks to the hotline.

Till then, keep your eyes open & register the hotline no in your HP.

A NEW front to fight the Ah Longs will open to aid police efforts in crippling loansharking in Singapore.

The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) will launch the X Ah Long hotline at 1800-9245664 on Thursday, with the 'X' signifying 'no', which promises anonymity for people who may not want to approach the police directly.

No details of callers to the X Ah Long hotline will be taken, unless volunteered by the callers themselves, and information given will be treated with utmost confidentiality, a statement from the NCPC said on Wednesday.

The hotline, which will be on trial for a year, will be open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, excluding lunch hour from 1 to 2pm. During non-operational hours, callers can leave information via voice recording. The information gathered will be channelled to the police to assist them in their work against loansharks.

The project received strong support and endorsement from law enforcers.

'It is heartening to see the community coming alongside Police to tackle illegal money-lending,' said Assistant Commissioner of Police Lim Kok Thai, Director Operations of the Singapore Police Force.

'Three out of 10 arrests have been made with public assistance and we certainly welcome such an initiative to strengthen our efforts in weeding out such criminal activities.'

The NCPC will also use new media platforms like Facebook, its website and forums to publicise the number to masses.

'This project is an initiative where NCPC utilises our greatest assets, our close ties with our partners in the community, and rally them toward crime prevention,' said Mr Tan Kian Hoon, Chairman of NCPC. 'This hotline is an effort by the community, for the community.'

From Straits Times, "Ah Longs beware!".

Update on 06/09: the hotline seems quite a success with 200 calls for the first month.

It has been a month since the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) launched a hotline which allows people to tell on loan sharks anonymously.

Called "X Ah Long", the hotline has received almost 200 calls so far.

Poh Kay Ping, an NCPC member, said: "It's very encouraging, and people are coming forward to give us information.

"Of course there are various situations - some of them are borrower themselves, desperate; some of them who are worried about their relatives becoming runners for these Ah Longs; some of them are neighbours of a victim who has neighbourhood being harassed - so quite wide spectrum."

The council passes all information gathered over to the police for investigations.

However, the police have yet to crack any case based on the hotline information as they need time to investigate cases thoroughly to ensure successful prosecution.

The council is urging former members of illegal money lending syndicates or those forced to participate in such activities to provide information through the hotline.

It said the identities of callers will be kept confidential.

From Channel NewsAsia, ""X Ah Long" hotline gets 200 calls in first month".

Imam Muda winner: Asyraf of Pulau Pinang

Check out this YouTube clip, "Hit Malaysian TV talent show stars Muslim scholars" for the names of the 10 'imam muda' (young imam).

The winner--the prize being a trip to Mecca to perform the haj--is by the way Muhammad Asyraf Mohammad Ridzuan from Pulau Pinang. Congratulations!

MALAYSIA'S top 'Young Imam' has vowed to soften the stern image of clerics and energise young Muslims after winning a hugely popular TV talent show search for a top young Islamic leader.

The show, which attracted worldwide attention, saw 10 finalists tackle tasks such as reciting verses from the Koran, washing corpses and slaughtering sheep according to Islamic rules. Following the reality TV formula of shows such as 'American Idol' and 'The X Factor,' one contestant was eliminated each week until the series drew to a close on Friday night.

Religious scholar Muhammad Asyraf Mohammad Ridzuan, who saw off nine rivals to win the 'Young Imam' title, said he wanted to reach out to youngsters to spark their interest in the religion. 'I want to be an imam who is friendly to the youth, cool, relaxed, able to play with children and engage the elderly,' the 26-year-old said after the finale, as he hailed the show as a 'victory of Islam'.

'I want to play football with the kids in my neighbourhood and still be a spiritual leader among them,' said the soft-spoken Asyraf, clad in a black long robe over a suit and wearing a white Islamic skullcap. Religious authorities in Malaysia, where more than 60 per cent of its 28 million population are Muslim, regularly make headlines with morality raids on hotels and nightclubs, looking for illicit drinking and sex.

In a development that alarmed rights activists, three women were caned in February for having sex out of wedlock - the first time the punishment under Islamic law had been carried out on women in Malaysia. But there is a debate even among Muslim leaders over whether the punishment-based approach is appropriate, or whether they should instead seek to persuade and inspire.

The shows' creators said a main reason for the success of the programme was that it has sought to make Islam more appealing to young people. 'I think it's because it's breaking a lot of traditions and a lot of stigma about the religion partly because of the title itself, 'Young Imam',' said Zainir Aminullah, editor of pay-TV operator Astro which airs the show.

From Straits Times, "'Imam Idol' hails win".

This healthy idiot used a handicap toilet and now wanted to sue SMRT?!?!

Just because the SMRT staff allegedly scolded him.

So what did he expect? The staff to be all smiles & allowed this kind of selfish act by a supposedly non-handicapped guy?

What an idiot! Really.

SMRT should instead enforce a harsher punishment against a similar abuse of handicap toilets.

When STOMPer John was unable to locate the gents' room at Newton MRT, he decided to use the handicap toilet instead. To his horror, a station staff member tried to open the door and cursed at him, even threatening to hit him.

The security personnel was not appeased even when John left the cubicle and apologised.

He continued to swear at him and held his hand up as if he were about to hit him when John went to retrieve a phone he left in the cubicle.

Angered by the rude behaviour of the staff member, John says:

"I was at Newton MRT on July 29 at 8.30am.

"I was rushing for work and was having a stomachache.

"I followed the toilet signs to the toilet but could not find any but only a handicap toilet. I assumed the gents' room was under renovation so I had no choice but to settle my stuff there.

"There was this uncle (SMRT staff) who kept on wanting to open the door of the toilet and shouted vulgarities at me.

"I was doing my business half way and I could not open the door to find out what was happening.

"When I opened the door, the SMRT staff person stared at me and scolded me, threatening to hit me.

"I was rushing to work so I didn't want to get involved in any argument.

"When I left the toilet, I found that I had left my phone inside the toilet.

"I quickly told the uncle nicely that I left my phone inside.

"The uncle opened the door and raised his hand like he was going to hit me.

"I said: 'Uncle, sorry, sorry. I left my phone inside. Sorry, sorry'.

"Then I quickly took my phone and left the toilet.

"SMRT, is that the way you trained your staff?

"I am going to go ahead to see if I can sue the uncle/SMRT.

"There is a video camera outside. If SMRT wants to track, it's always so easy to.

"I hope SMRT can answer me in regards to this matter.

"I need the uncle to apologise to me!".

From STOMP, "MRT station staff shouts vulgarities and threatens to hit me for using handicap toilet".
