China Titanium, the company formerly known as Jade Tech

Juliet once exclaimed--dramatically, you know how it is with such a character--: "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." Jade Technologies Holdings apparently disagree. Titanium for sure does not smell as sweet as 'Jade', I guess. The company is proposing to change its name to China Titanium. It's last traded at 1.5 cents. Titanium has never been so appealingly...cheap.

Not vested. Ever.

Catalist-listed Jade Technologies Holdings has proposed changing its name to China Titanium.

In a stock exchange filing, the firm's board of directors said the name change is "to reflect the new focus on the company's new business activities."

The former chip maker has turned to distributing titanium dioxide in China and has divested its loss-making businesses, including a coalmine in Indonesia last year.

Last November, it reported its first full-year profit of RMB12.4 million for 2010 after nine years of losses.

The proposed name change has received approval from the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority and the proposed name has been reserved by the company until February 18 next year, the company said.

The proposal will be subject to shareholder approval via a special resolution at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) to be convened.

The company said it will release further information on the proposal and the notice to the EGM in due course.

Aaron Kok Chun Cheong: a trainee teacher, a blogger, and a sex offender

A 23-year-old Aaron Kok Chun Cheong is all the above. He had sex with two girls aged 15 & 12 (according to Straits Times) or 13 (according to Channel News Asia). No, it's not a threesome, mind you. The wrong doings were done in separate occasions.

Oh yes, he is a blogger too. His blog http://mesmerising-sorrows.blogspot.com/ (titled ominously, "Lost & Yet to be Found") is now restricted, but the cache page is still available here, thanks to Google.

So what if he's a blogger? I'm sure some of us are asking that. It's an irrelevant fact, one will rightly point out. Agreed. My point is "Trust no one, even if he or she owns a supposedly innocent blog". Take Aaron's blog as an example. One of his 'wishes' mentioned in his blog is cutely innocent: "To be friends with someone once more". Right. Whoever could have guessed?!

And what if he is a trainee teacher? It's not the first case "a member of the teaching profession has been convicted of sexual offences, after all". (Channel News Asia is kinda merciless in that statement. Heh. But I concur.)

The point is we hardly can't tell who is good or bad based on one's profession. Screw streotyping! Judge a book by its cover & you may end up burn the book after reading. Hmm...doesn't really make sense, but I just happen to remember this movie, "Burn After Reading". Never mind me.

A MAN who had sex with two underage girls a few years ago was sentenced to 15 months' jail on Tuesday.

But Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, will only start his sentence on Tuesday, Jan 4, 2011, as he wanted to spend the New Year with his family.

Kok, now a trainee at National Institute of Education (NIE), was in national service at the time of the offences in 2007 and 2008.

The court heard that he got to know the two girls through an Internet chatline in 2006.

He had sex with a 15-year-old student at a toilet for the handicapped in West Mall shopping centre on April 20, 2008, a day after his return from NS training in Taiwan.

Earlier in September 2007, he had invited the other girl, then 12, to his flat where he had sex with her in his bedroom.

The offences came to light when the younger girl was found to be pregnant and was warded in hospital in July 2008. The girl, who terminated the pregnancy, had told the police that she had engaged in sex with several male persons.

Kok was not the biological father of the foetus.

Three other charges were taken into consideration during his sentencing.

Defence counsel Amolat Singh said Kok - who had a good record in polytechnic and during his national service - would have to pay liquidated damages amounting to $50,000 to $60,000 to the NIE for breaching his training contract.

From Straits Times, "Man jailed for sex with 2 underage girls, 15 & 12".

Another member of the teaching profession has been convicted of sexual offences.

Aaron Kok Chun Cheong, 23, who on Tuesday pleaded guilty to two counts of sex with two underage girls, will be sacked as a trainee teacher, his lawyer, Amolat Singh, told a District Court.

Kok committed the offences between September 2007 and April 2008 when he was a full-time national serviceman.

Kok met the first girl through an Internet chat-line in late 2006.

A year later, he invited the girl, 13, to his flat and the pair then became intimate with each other. They then had sex and did not contact each other after that.

The girl was then warded at National University Hospital on July 15, 2008 after she complained of stomach pain and vomiting. She was pregnant.

She told the police she had had sex with several men.

She had an abortion on July 31, 2008, and tests revealed that Kok was not the biological father of the foetus.

A month earlier, another girl, 15, reported to the police that she had consensual sex with Kok on three occasions between April 20 and May 31 2008.

The first offence was committed in a handicapped persons toilet at West Mall shopping centre.

Pleading for leniency, Kok said he was a first-time offender and did not set out to target his victims.

Mr Amolat said: "They initiated and actively sought to have sexual relations with him."

Kok was jailed 15 months for carnal connection. He could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined.

Mr Amolat added that for breaching his contract with the National Institute of Education, Kok would also need to pay about S$60,000 as liquidated damages.

Last week, former MOE scholar, Jonathan Wong, was expelled from the University of York in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to 17 charges of possessing child pornography videos.

The York Crown Court sentenced Wong to a six-month imprisonment sentence suspended for two years - which means he will not be jailed if he does not break the law during that period.

The court also ordered Wong to be placed under eight months' supervision and to be listed on the sex offender registry for seven years. He is disqualified from working with children.

Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time

Yes, the title of the movie, "Time Traveller: The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" does ring a bell, doesn't it? There was this highly-recommended-to-watch 2006 anime titled, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time". Oh, and the main heroine for this live action is the very same Riisa Naka who was the voice actress of the main protagonist of the 2006 animated film.

Check out the trailer here, "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time trailer 2010 (時をかける少女)".

The critics have only praises for this movie. Take this one for example:

What’s relatively surprising about this film—and the franchise in general—is just how consistently creative it remains considering its abundant reinterpretations.

For a franchise that has had numerous interpretations of its plot throughout the course of nearly 30 years, Toki wo Kakeru Shojo is still able to offer yet another unique take on the time traveling heroine.

While the device of time travel has always been a main component within telling the story, the films have steadily remained focused upon the personal dilemmas of its characters, never allowing the use of time travel to take over the course of its story.

This is even more visible within this film, mainly because the element of time travel is only performed twice throughout and doesn’t remain a huge aspect of the film like some of its predecessors.

At its core, the film focuses upon the notion of promise and how one can fulfill that promise despite the passing of time. This notion was explored in the original 1983 film, and it works exceptionally well here even more so given the rather vivid relationships shared amongst the characters.

While the familial bond was only a minor aspect of the 2006 animated film, here it’s utilized as the catalyst to promote the story and is viewed as major element in concluding the storyline from the 1983 film.

妹记大排档 at Block 654 Yishun Ave 4 - who cares it's 'unhygienic'...

Referring to Stomp, "So unhygienic! Famous 'tze char' stall prepares raw meat on ground", well the thing is that at least the raw meat is still cooked prior to serving, right?

I like best this comment from one Stomper, oink2210: "U really think the food you consume are prepared in the most hygienic way? Look at how your mum cook and you will know."

Quoted from Stomp:

STOMPer Karen witnessed helpers at a well-known 'tze char' or cooked food stall in Yishun carelessly preparing raw meat on the floor at the back of the stall. According to the STOMPer, the workers also dump innards and unwanted parts into the drain nearby.

She relates the incident to STOMP in an email:

"There is a tze char food stall at Block 654 Yishun Ave 4 called 妹记大排档.

"Ever since it was featured on a TV entertainment programme, its dinner crowd boomed.

"Perhaps its kitchen is overwhelmed by food orders, the stall's helpers have started to process raw food on the floor at the back of the food centre, right next to pails that held used dining ware.

"I have also attached photos which show how a kitchen helper had placed a clear sheet of plastic on the grimy floor. That same sheet of clear plastic was later placed on top of some patty he had prepared.

"Raw meats that fell onto the floor were simply picked up and tossed back into the lot, and brought back into the kitchen.

"Furthermore, when the kitchen helpers were done with their meat, they would conveniently dispose of the filthy water and unwanted animal innards onto the floor and down the drains.

"It was disgusting how bloody pools would form in the grooves of the parking lot closest to the back of the food centre.

"My family has brought this issue up to the attention of the National Environment Agency. We provided photo evidence too.

"Disappointingly, the officer assigned to this matter replied to say nothing incriminating was found.

"It is worthwhile to note that the officer had conducted a 'discreet inspection' at 8.30am on a Monday morning. Tze char stalls start work late morning and get busy towards dinner time.

"It would seem a lot more appropriate if the officer had conducted his 'discreet inspection' on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings, so I am very surprised that was not done.

"I am surprised by the nonchalance of NEA in this matter, when the agency has always preached the importance of food safety and public hygiene in Singapore."

Update on 27/12: NEA punished the stall with a fine of $600 and 8 demerit points.

After reader Karen reported to STOMP that well-known food stall Mei Ji Da Pai Dang in Yishun was carelessly preparing raw meat on the ground in the back lane, the NEA investigated the matter and slapped a fine of $600 on the operator.

Last Wed (Dec 22), Karen witnessed a worker preparing raw food on the ground at the back of a 'cooked food' stall at Block 654 Yishun Ave 4.

The National Health Agency (NEA) conducted an investigation and imposed a fine of $600 on the operator of the stall, which also received eight demerit points. A stall that receives 12 points would have its license suspended for two weeks.

Responding to The New Paper's questions, the stall manager explained that the kitchen sink had malfunctioned on the day STOMPer Karen had taken the photos and sent them to STOMP.

The damaged sink has since been replaced.

Despite the investigation and punishment, patrons said they would continue to eat at the stall because the food is 'so good'.

Tangled Web: Ryan Chong Yiing Yih (of Daphne Iking enticement case) and Serena

So Ryan Chong Yiing Yih is no angel, either, huh? The ex-husband of Daphne Iking--the star in a stoopid enticement case of Malaysia--admitted he had an affair with a guest relations officer of one karaoke club in Shanghai, 'Serena' during their marriage.

Well, to quote from Bible, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone”. So who are we to judge these screw-up couples, after all?!

Or would you prefer this quote from Robert Frost, “Let him that is without stone among you cast the first thing he can lay his hands on.”

Heh. Evil.

Chong confesses he ‘met someone’ while working in China

KUALA LUMPUR: Daphne Iking’s ex-husband, Ryan Chong Yiing Yih, also had an affair during their marriage, the magistrate’s court heard.

Businessman Chong, 32, who had taken corporate figure Darren Choy Khin Ming, 45, to court in a private summons for “enticing his wife,” confessed yesterday that he had “met someone” while working in China.

He admitted when cross-examined by Choy’s counsel Datuk Jagjit Singh that he had met a guest relations officer - “Serena” - in a karaoke club in Shanghai in June 2007.

However, he said he had confessed to a pregnant Iking a month later, seeking her forgiveness because he felt he had done wrong, and claimed that she had forgiven him.

Jagjit then put it to him that he was lying, saying that he had confessed because Serena had contacted Iking via her (Iking’s) blog before she could confront him about it.

Chong disagreed, saying that Iking was unaware of the matter before he told her, and denied that he had promised Serena to marry her.

He also denied paying Serena 2mil renminbi (about RM941,000) as compensation to buy her silence and that he had been driven by greed for demanding RM5mil from Choy – later reduced to RM2.5mil – and RM1mil from Iking for settlement before the matter was brought to court.

Jagjit: But you demanded RM1mil from her.

Chong: That’s not greed. That’s compensation for not telling me and my family that she was pregnant with some other person’s kid. Even after the baby was born, she continued to portray the kid as mine.

Chong also admitted to giving Iking and her child four days to leave their home, adding that he told her to “move out.”

Jagjit: You agree that the baby, who was 11 months old, was innocent and that she should not suffer?

Chong: Agree.

Choy has been charged under Section 498 of the Penal Code with enticing Iking, knowing that she was a married woman, with the intention of having sexual intercourse.

He allegedly committed the offence at a condominium unit in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here between July 2007 and September last year.

The hearing before magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah continues on March 4.

From The Star Online, "Iking’s ex-hubby had affair, too".

The former husband of model and TV presenter Daphne Eleanor Iking admitted having relations with a Guest Relations Officer (GRO) from China while Iking was conceiving.

Ryan Chong Yiing Yih, 32, said the relationship lasted for only one month and he had made a confession to Iking personally in July 2007 when she was conceiving.

Giving his testimony at the Magistrate's Court here, he said he made the confession as he felt what he had done was wrong. He said he had met the woman, Serena, at a karaoke club.

Chong, a businessman, and Iking were married on Jan 27, 2007 in Bali, in Indonesia and the couple has a daughter before their divorce in 2009.

Chong is the first witness in his private suit against former Adidas managing director Darren Choy Khin Ming, 45, who is charged with enticing Iking, 31, with the intention of having intercourse with her at a condominium, The Plaza, Jalan Wan Kadir, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, between July 2007 and September 2008.

Choy is being charged under Section 498 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum jail term of two years, or a fine or both, upon conviction.

Questioned by counsel Datuk Jagjit Singh (representing Choy) during cross-examination, Chong said that his ex-wife communicated with Serena through a blog site.

However, Chong denied having paid Renminbi (RMB) 2 million (Chinese currency) to Serena so as not to expose the matter (affair) and disagreed with Jagjit's contention that his trip to Shanghai in July 2007 was to settle the matter.

"I went there to submit my resignation letter to a real estate company there and wanted to save my marriage," he said.

Meanwhile, when asked by Jagjit about the letter demanding RM5 million from Choy, Chong said it was the earliest letter dated Oct. 17, 2008 but after negotiations between their lawyers, the sum was reduced to RM2.5 million.

He said the demand was made so that the case (enticing someone else's wife) would not be taken to court and that he had also demanded RM1 million from Iking for conceiving a child that was not his while they were still married.

The case before Magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah continues on March 4, next year.

From Daily Express Newspaper Online, "Iking's ex-hubby admits fling with a China Doll".

Daphne Iking’s ex-husband Ryan Chong Yiing Yih also had an affair while they were still married, the Magistrate's court heard Monday.

Businessman Chong, 32, who has taken corporate figure Darren Choy Khin Ming, 45, to court in a private summons for "enticing his wife", confessed that he had "met someone" while working in China.

When cross-examined by Choy's counsel Datuk Jagjit Singh, he admitted he had met a guest-relations officer (GRO) named Serena in a karaoke club in Shanghai, in June 2007.

However, he said he confessed the matter to a pregnant Iking a month later, in July, seeking her forgiveness because he felt he had done wrong, and said she had forgiven him.

Jagjit then put it to him that he was lying, saying that he had confessed to Iking because Serena had contacted Iking via her (Iking's) blog, which was the reason he had made the confession to Iking before she could confront him about it.

Chong disagreed, saying Iking was not aware of the matter before he told her about it.

He also denied paying Serena RMB2mil (about RM941,000) to buy her silence.

Jagjit then accused Chong of being driven by greed, for demanding RM5mil from Choy, which was later reduced to RM2.5mil, and RM1mil from Iking, for the settlement of the matter before it was brought to court, which Chong denied.

Jagjit: But you demanded RM1mil from her.

Chong: That's not greed. That's compensation for not telling me and my family she was pregnant with some other person's kid. Even after the baby was born, she continued to portray the kid as mine.

He also admitted to giving Iking and her child four days to leave their home.

Choy has been charged under Section 498 of the Penal Code with enticing Iking, knowing that she was a married woman, with the intention of having sexual intercourse.

He allegedly committed the offence at a condominium unit in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here between July 2007 and September last year.

If found guilty, Choy can be jailed up to two years, fined or both.

Representing Chong is lawyer Chris Lim and Wong Kian Kheong, while lawyers Jagjit and Akbardin Abdul Kader stood as counsel for Choy.

The hearing before magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah continues on March 4, next year.

1Malaysia plagiarised from OneIsrael (One Israel) campaign?

According to Wikipedia on "1Malaysia", the ideology is described as "1Malaysia stresses national unity and ethnic tolerance. The 2010 values of 1Malaysia as articulated by Najib Razak are perseverance, a culture of excellence, acceptance, loyalty, education, humility, integrity, and meritocracy".

Malaysia PM Najib Tun Razak is obviously annoyed at the allegations of 1Malaysia being a copy of a concept adopted by another country. In one of the articles, it's stated that the original concept is that of OneIsrael, but upon reading the Wikipedia article on this 1Malaysia, it more sounds like the ideology of Singapore.

THE Prime Minister has expressed regret over allegations of 1Malaysia being a copy of a concept adopted by another country.

Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said 1Malaysia was Malaysia's own creation.

'There is nowhere in the world that has 1Malaysia, People's First, Performance Now.

'We move forward based on reality not based on dreams or try to trade on something that is unrealistic.

'It is easy to make a political promise,' he said after officiating Cuepacs' 25th convention on Tuesday.

Datuk Najib said the government was a responsible government, which formulated policies based on realities.

From Straits Times, "'1Malaysia is not a copy'".

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said on Tuesday he felt slighted by the allegation that the 1Malaysia concept had been plagiarised from another country.

Describing the allegation as "a big lie", he said the 1Malaysia concept which was introduced after he helmed the country's administration was his own creation.

"The 1Malaysia concept was not copied from another country. It is my own creation. Other countries may have a one this and a one that but nowhere in this world is there a 1Malaysia: People First, Performance Now," he said when opening the Cuepacs triennial convention, here.

In a stern voice, Najib said the government moved forward on the basis of reality and not any dream.

"It is very easy for us to make a political promise, but will that something based on the most populist approach be beneficial to us or otherwise?" he asked.

Najib said a responsible government focused on developing a country should uphold and implement responsible policies.

"A responsible government needs responsible policies ... not promises which are not founded on reality," he said.

Najib has come under criticism by several quarters, particularly Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who had alleged that the government, through global communication consulting firm Apco Worldwide, had plagiarised the 1Malaysia concept from the OneIsrael campaign which the same company had allegedly created for the Zionist regime in 1999.

The Parliamentary Rights and Privileges Committee found Anwar's allegation to be without basis and recommended to the Dewan Rakyat for him to be suspended from the house for six months.

Last Thursday, before it adjourned sine die, the Dewan Rakyat suspended Anwar for six months. Three other opposition MPs, Karpal Singh (DAP-Bukit Gelugor), R. Sivarasa (PKR-Subang) and Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak), were also suspended for six months for contempt because of making public information privy to the rights and privileges committee.

On the question of bonus for civil servants, Najib, who is also finance minister, said it would be considered if the financial position of the government was strong.

The prime minister said the government understood what Cuepacs wanted but the government had to be realistic in its spending.

"We will do the best (for the people) but within the capability (of the government). I would be most happy if I could pay bonus because I would be able to see the smiles on the faces of the 1.3 million civil servants. But we have to be realistic. Our expenditure cannot exceed our income," he said.

Najib said the government did not want to be forced into borrowing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) just to pay the salaries of civil servants.

"If we do that, in no time we will become a country administered by the IMF. With the IMF administering the country, our independence will become meaningless," he said.

In his address to the 1,171 delegates, Najib reminded civil servants serving on the frontlines to understand the Government Transformation Programme (GTP) as they reflected the government's image.

"If these frontliners do not subject themselves to a shift in the mindset, then there will be disappointment among the people.

"They (the people) will be disappointed with the government because the policies announced at the highest level for implementation would not have reached the frontliners in the government," he said, advising Cuepacs to ensure the mindset shift.

The prime minister also said that civil servants must undergo a mindset change to openly accept and facilitate the entry of foreigners in government service.

He said civil servants should not look upon foreigners with suspicion because, more importantly, it was necessary to obtain foreign expertise for the country to remain competitive.

Even Facebook can't save Alviss Kong. Real shame on his 'friends'!!

Just go to YouTube and search for "Alviss Kong", you'll find a lot of tribute video clips. Pity it won't do nothing to bring him back. It's too late, but what his father said just strikes me to be the real words of wisdom: "Why didn't he think about his family as much as he did for a girl he only knew for four months?"

How true. It's not easy to move on, I'd be the first to admit. But to have an easy way out to do so, it's just sad.

"Goodbye, my friend, goodbye My love, you are in my heart."

Russian poet Sergei Esenin wrote this suicide note in his own blood and passed it to his friend the day before he hanged himself.

That was in 1925; imagine what he would have done if he had killed himself today.

When Alviss Kong, 22-year-old from Malaysia, decided to take his life after his girlfriend of four months left him last week, he posted a farewell status on his Facebook page together with a teary photo of himself.

The status at 11.15pm read "Count Down For 45 Mins...What should I do in this 45 mins?"

In the ensuing minutes, up to 204 Facebook members "liked" his suicidal status post on his Facebook wall, but no one stopped him or alerted his family on his suicidal intentions.

Only his sister Chelvin Kong, 28, reportedly tried to talk him out of the suicide, but Alviss assured her that he was joking.

A few hours later, his body was found sprawled on a car, fallen from the 14th floor of his apartment building in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

This tragic tale has been getting a lot of media coverage especially in the Chinese press, begging the question -- what do you do when someone tells you that he or she wants to commit suicide?

Student Ariel Yong*, 17, believes that many thought that Alviss' message was a prank and simply played along.

"Sometimes when my friend and I wait for the LRT train, we make stupid jokes about throwing ourselves in front of the train. But we know it's just a joke. I suppose on Facebook, it is difficult to know what somebody really means unless you are also friends outside."

She feels this shows the significance of "friend" or "community" on Facebook: "Most are not real friends. My real friends would really know if I am joking or serious or if I am depressed or happy."

International survey firm TNS last month reported that Malaysians had the most "friends" on Facebook and spent nine hours a day on average surfing the site of more than 500 million members.

Real friends or not, Kim Chua*, 19, hopes Alviss got some comfort from those who responded to his wall posting.

"They may not be his real friends or close friends, but no one wants to die alone," she says.

The psychology student says studies show that an estimated 12--20% of suicides are accompanied by a note and people write it to ease their pain, not as a cry for help.

Paul Jambunathan, consultant clinical psychologist at Monash University Malaysia and Sunway Medical Centre describes those who "liked" Alviss' Facebook status as "emotional voyeurs".

"People love to hear about what is happening to others and how they are suffering," he says, linking it to the trends in today's popular culture.

"This culture includes suicide as an option to past history within the family or significant others, movies, lyrics and media sensationalism. They all have an effect that makes suicide an option when really it should never be," he says.

But ultimately, no one can be blamed for Alviss' death except himself. It was irresponsible of Alviss to put up the posting on Facebook, says Jambunathan.

"He expected society to be responsible for him. He killed himself because he was depressed, and became helpless and hopeless. It is unfair to pin this on the girl when the only person responsible is himself, his choices in life and the kind of friends he kept."

Jambunathan believes that Alviss might not have jumped if there was any inkling of help or hope.

Consultant psychologist Valerie Jacques agrees that Alviss was deeply depressed and put his hopes in the relationship to make him happier.

"Nothing external will make a person happier when they are depressed from deep inside," she says.

What is clear -- and somewhat comforting -- is the notion that love and the way people deal with its ups and downs have not changed over time.

Jambunathan concurs, saying that les affaires du coeur (affairs of the heart) have been known to drive men to "madness."

He explains that very deep-level emotions are involved from even the early stages of love such as infatuation right to the latter stages of mantaining a functional relationship.

"How angry are you when you are hitting on a girl you have just met, and someone else is doing the same? (Love) evokes and stimulates the very basic and deep-rooted issues in people.

"These emotions lead to aggressive behaviour that can lead people to harming others or themselves," he says.

This is probably why people act uncharacteristically when love is the core issue at stake. As they say, "love makes the world go round" or on the opposite end "love hurts."

Jambunathan points out that while suicide seems to be an extreme option, others regularly indulge in self-destructive behaviour because of failures in their relationships. The "broken-hearted" might turn to alcohol to try and forget their relationship or sleep around to make themselves feel better, he adds.

Julia*, 30, remembers when she drove to see her then boyfriend after they had a fight over the phone. She was at a party and had been drinking a lot.

In any other circumstance, she wouldn't have driven but at that moment she really had to see her boyfriend.

"I had many near misses on the road. I almost drove off a bridge but in the end I arrived at my destination. It was a very stupid thing to do," she recalls.

She says that while career and financial issues are important, they are not as important as her romantic relationships.

Nazmi Johan*, 35, says that even tough-looking males can be "over-sensitive" when their relationships fail.

"It's quite funny to see a grown man cry because of a girl but it happens," he says.

"Love is the biggest seller. In almost every movie, there is always some sort of love element. People always believe that there is someone out there made for them and they will live happily ever after," he muses.

Gregory Tan* who has been "dumped" a couple of times admits that he felt lost and turned to alcohol when his heart was broken.

"When that "one" person rejects you, it's as if the whole world is rejecting you," says Tan.

These days, he tries to be more philosophical about things. "I try to take an 'everything happens for a reason' attitude. When I fail at a relationship, I would say to myself that I would find someone more compatible," he says.

Jacques believes love, not relationships, is a big reason why people consider suicide. In Alviss's case, she believes that the root problem was that he did not feel loved.

"Even though his family love him dearly, he had a deep belief that no one loved him and so he was not lovable. So, any external sign of rejection or break up can trigger bad feelings," she says.

*Not their real names

From Yahoo! Fit to Post, "FEATURE: Heartbreak in Facebook world".

'GOODBYE, my friend, goodbye My love, you are in my heart.' Russian poet Sergei Esenin wrote this suicide note in his own blood and passed it to his friend the day before he hanged himself.

When Alviss Kong, 22, decided to take his life after his girlfriend of four months left him last week, he posted a farewell status on his Facebook page together with a teary photo of himself.

The status at 11.15pm read 'Count Down For 45 Mins...What should I do in this 45 mins?'

In the ensuing minutes, up to 204 Facebook members 'liked' his suicidal status post on his Facebook wall, but no one stopped him or alerted his family on his suicidal intentions. A few hours later, his body was found sprawled on a car, fallen from the 14th floor of his apartment building in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

Paul Jambunathan, consultant clinical psychologist at Monash University Malaysia and Sunway Medical Centre describes those who 'liked' Alviss' Facebook status as 'emotional voyeurs'. 'People love to hear about what is happening to others and how they are suffering,' he says, linking it to the trends in today's popular culture.

'This culture includes suicide as an option to past history within the family or significant others, movies, lyrics and media sensationalism. They all have an effect that makes suicide an option when really it should never be,' he says.

From Straits Times, "Heartbreak in FB world".

“It was the first and the last time he said he loved me in 22 years of knowing him. And now, he’s gone,” sobbed air stewardess, Chelvin Kong, 28, recalling her last conversation with her brother.

He committed suicide in the wee hours of Wednesday last week. Stating she and her brother, Alviss, 22, had drifted apart since she moved to Brunei after getting married and joining the Royal Brunei Airlines some nine years ago, they still stayed in touch via Facebook.

"I would check his status updates on Facebook before going to bed and we would tease and exchange comments with each other," Chelvin told The Malay Mail.

She became concerned when she saw Alviss' status at 11.15pm on Tuesday, stating there was a 45-minute countdown to the end of his life.

“At first, I thought he was joking," said Chelvin. "What freaked me out was him asking me to take care of the family, especially my mum.”

Taken aback by Alviss' comments, Chelvin said: “Never once had he expressed such mushy words in all the years I had known him.”

Chelvin then tried to call her brother about 1.30am.

When she did not get a response, she contacted her father to check on Alviss. Her father told her Alviss was at his usual mamak spot near their apartment, having a drink with his friends.

Chelvin then persuaded her father to go to the mamak stall and call her from there.

“I spoke to Alviss when my father passed the phone to him. When I scolded him for not answering his handphone, his excuse was he had not heard it ringing. He told me the Facebook comments were just a joke and that he was pulling a prank on his friends.

”During the call, Chelvin said he assured her everything was fine and told her to go to sleep. Reassured, Chelvin called it a night. Thus, she was shocked to get a call from her father later at 3.30am telling her Alviss had jumped off the 14th floor of the apartment building.

“I heard a loud noise and when I looked down from the veranda. It was Alviss lying covered in blood on a car at the ground floor," he had told her.

It is learnt Alviss had been emotionally istressed over a recent breakup with his girlfriend.

Chelvin said she knew about her brother's relationship and learnt the couple had split from his Facebook relationship status update.

It is learnt Alviss and his ex-girlfriend were together for four months. Both had been blogging about the end of the relationship.

In a farewell note on his Facebook profile page, Alviss posted one last picture of himself tearing up. Alviss' father, a taxi driver, was disappointed at not being informed his son had been harbouring suicidal thoughts.

Declining to be named, the 60-year-old said he learnt only later that Alviss had confided to his friends about his heartbreak.

He felt they should have alerted a family member, whether or not it was a prank.

"I was there at the mamak stall with Alviss. His friends could have alerted me then about the comments and his conversations with them."

He denied barring the ex-girlfriend from visiting his son's body last Thursday.

“I'm not angry with his ex-girlfriend. She can come and pay her respects if she wants.”

Noting Alviss had introduced the woman as his girlfriend a few months back, he said: "Why didn't he think about his family as much as he did for a girl he only knew for four months?"

Meanwhile, Alviss' mother had yet to be informed of his death as she is reportedly emotionally weak and the family was waiting for the right time to break the news.

She is currently in Brunei to help care for Chelvin’s newborn daughter and is still under the impression the couple had rushed to KL on an urgent work matter.

Mutual friends of the ex-couple were seen outside the funeral parlour at Jirat Kwong Tong here on Friday night.

“We are all here to show support when his ex-girlfriend arrives. To us, no one is to be blamed here. We don’t want reporters to question her about anything," said one of the friends at the wake.

“Speculation from family, friends and the media stating his ex-girlfriend is the cause of the suicide should end. What has happened was just a breakup, common among youngsters these days," said another friend.

Daphne Iking was indeed 'enticed'...willingly?

Further revelations on Daphne Iking enticement trial: the 3-year-old Isobel Daniella Iking-Chong is not Daphne's ex-hubby, Ryan Chong Yiing Yih's daughter. DNA tests had confirmed so.

There are two conclusions. Firstly, Daphne did have an affair with someone else which led to the creation (for lack of a better word) of Isobel. Though it is not stated whether the DNA test revealed that the father of Isobel is Darren Choy Khin Ming, the man which is in the center of this 'enticement' case.

Secondly, I have no sympathy to Ryan after this revelation. It ought to be kept within the court & not to have the news spread throughout the world. Isobel is not the guilty party here and yet, she's been dragged into the messy turmoil.

Stupid case. Stupid 'enticement' case.

The DNA of Daphne Iking’s three-year-old child does not match that of her ex-husband, a magistrate’s court heard.

Ryan Chong Yiing Yih, 32, claimed that the results of a paternity test stated he was “excluded from being the biological father” of the child.

He was testifying in a private summons against corporate figure Darren Choy Khin Ming, 45, under Section 498 of the Penal Code.

Choy was charged with enticing Iking, knowing that she was a married woman, with the intention of having sexual intercourse.

He allegedly committed the offence at a condominium unit in Taman Tun Dr Ismail here between July 2007 and September last year.

If found guilty, Choy can be jailed up to two years, fined or both.

During examination-in-chief by his lawyer, Wong Kian Kheong, Chong told the court he had his suspicions about his daughter after reading the e-mail correspondence between Iking and Choy spanning from 2007 to 2008.

Chong said he came across the e-mails on his home computer on Aug 10, 2008.

In an excerpt of an online chat between the two, which he read out in court, Iking was alleged to have told Choy: “I want her (the child) to look like you.”

Other excerpts included her allegedly telling Choy that the baby “has your face shape. Not mine, not Ryan’s. You know you have a Bajau face right?”

In taking the stand, Chong read out e-mails in which Choy addressed Iking as “sweetie”, “baby”, “baby girl” and “Your Highness”.

Choy was also alleged to have written: “I’ve found a special someone. One whom I share all my laughter with so willingly. One who has given me a new lease of life.

“As I write this short note, I realise you are more than special. I’m blessed. So blessed. Never a day goes by without me thinking of my baby.”

One of the e-mails also had a list of some 30 hotels where they had stayed together and also an invitation for Iking to join him on a trip to Vienna and London.

Representing Choy were lawyers Datuk Jagjit Singh and Akbardin Abdul Kader.

Earlier, Wong told the court he had subpoenaed Iking as a witness in court.

However, when the court asked if she would turn up, Wong replied: “Man proposes, God disposes. I can only issue the subpoena.”

The hearing before magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah continues on Monday.

From The Star Online, "Iking’s daughter is not ex-hubby’s child, court told". (18/12/10)

The ex-husband of model and TV presenter Daphne Eleanor Iking told the Magistrate's Court Friday that Isobel Daniella Iking-Chong is not his biological child.

Ryan Chong Yiing Yih said that DNA tests had confirmed that Isobel is not his daughter.

Chong said he decided to get tests done after reading e-mail exchanges between former Adidas managing director Darren Choy Khin Ming and Iking.

He said that his suspicions grew when an e-mail from Iking to Choy stated: "Her (Isobel's) face resembles u more."

He then took Isobel to a clinic in Petaling Jaya which sent a specimen to Australia to find out who Isobel's biological father was.

Chong said that blood tests on himself and Iking showed they both had Type O blood while Isobel had Type A.

He was giving a statement in his private summons against 45-year-old Choy for enticing 31-year-old Iking, with the intent of having sexual intercourse at The Plaza condominium, Jalan Wan Kadir, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, between July 2007 and September 2008.

Iking wed Chong on Jan 27, 2009 in Bali, Indonesia. They divorced in 2009.

If convicted under Section 498 of the Penal Code, Choy faces up to two years in jail, or a fine, or both.

Choy is represented by lawyers Datuk Jagjit Singh and Akberdin Abdul Kader.

Chong told the court that there were many romantic e-mails between Choy and Iking, as well as interactions on Google Chat which he discovered in his former wife's computer.

He said the e-mails and chats between the two started on Sept 13, 2006, which was before he married Iking..

"I have proof that Choy had the intention of enticing my ex-wife for sexual intercourse," he said when asked by his lawyer, Wong Kian Kheong Chong.

Chong, 32, said it was through the e-mails and chats that he knew Iking and Choy planned to holiday together at the Banyan Tree Bintan Resort, Indonesia.

The hearing before Magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah continues on Monday.

From Bernama, "Isobel Is Not My Child - Chong". (17/12/10)

The former husband of TV personality Daphne Iking had once tried to surprise the actress by turning up at the KL International Airport (KLIA) to meet her when she arrived from London two years ago.

Instead, he was shocked when he saw Darren Choy Khin Ming, the man accused of enticing Iking, kissing her on the cheek, a magistrate’s court heard yesterday.

Ryan Chong Yiing Yih testified yesterday that he saw Choy, 45, with Iking at the arrival hall of KLIA on July 5, 2008.

The two had arrived on the same flight from London, he added.

“The accused (Choy) had his right hand over my (former) wife’s shoulder and kissed her cheek near the ear,” Chong said.

The 32-year-old businessman is the first witness in the high-profile enticement trial.

Chong recounted that he had arrived from Shanghai at about 3.30pm the same day and knew that Iking, 31, was also flying in from London around the same time.

Upon his arrival, he asked the information counter for the arrival gate of Iking’s flight and decided to surprise her.

He added that he was shocked to see Choy with Iking because the latter had not mentioned the accused was on the same flight.

Choy said the two did not notice him and he witnessed the kiss on the cheek.

Chong finally confronted them more than three hours later at the airport and both denied having an affair.

To a question by his lawyer Wong Kian Kheong, Chong said that he decided to commence the private summons because he “did not want the accused to break other families”.

He added that he wanted to prevent the accused from using his position as the managing director of a multi-national company.

“He had used his position to entice my wife, destroyed my marriage and ruined lives,” he added.

Chong also testified that he had accidentally discovered e-mail correspondence between Iking and Choy on his home computer on Aug 10, 2008.

He said he did not confront Iking about the e-mails because he wanted to speak to his close friend Harold Tan about the matter.

The hearing continues before magistrate Engku Ahmad Rashdi Engku Abdillah on Dec 17 and 20.

Chong had initiated a private summons against Choy under Section 498 of the Penal Code for enticing or taking away or detaining with criminal intent a married woman.

Choy was charged with enticing Iking, knowing that she was a married woman, with the intention of having sexual intercourse.

He allegedly committed the offence at a condominium unit in Taman Tun Dr Ismail between July 2007 and September last year.

If found guilty, he can be jailed up to two years, fined or both.

From The Star Online, "Iking’s ex tells of kiss on cheek".

Chiam See Tong on ISA: "very dangerous and arbitrary"

It's an interesting remark that I highlighted from what discussed at a political forum. ISA is "very dangerous and arbitrary", huh, Mr. Chiam? More importantly, is ISA effective? If yes (and I believe so), it is justified to be what Mr. Chiam perceives as "very dangerous and arbitrary".

Housing, income inequality, the Internal Security Act (ISA) and National Service (NS) issues were the order of the day at a political forum where a number of possible opposition election candidates aired their views.

The four topics dominated the session held Thursday night and organised by socio-political website The Online Citizen, which was broadly divided into economic and social policies, civil liberties and political topics.

Referring to a population increase brought about by immigration, Worker's Party's Gerald Giam said: "An immediate solution is to increase supply of new HDB flats to reduce pressure on demand".

"We believe that HDB flats are affordable ... only for those stretching out loans for 30 years. But that is way too long to be paying off a housing loan. Perhaps it should be reduced to 20 years such that it is the benchmark for affordability," he said.

Potong Pasir MP Chiam See Tong from the Singapore People's Party also weighed in on the housing issue, and claimed that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) was "losing touch with the people".

Singapore Democratic Party's Chee Soon Juan -- who said the opposition should engage the media more -- felt there should be greater transparency in terms of the labour and land costs which go into the building of HDB flats.

To further tackle housing affordability issues, Mr Giam also suggested prices of new HDB flats be pegged to the median income of Singaporeans, instead of the current policy of being pegged to surrounding resale flat prices.

A more radical suggestion from National Solidarity Party secretary-general Goh Meng Seng was to do away with grants for young couples to buy resale flats.

"It's actually not a good idea because when you pump in money, the demand goes up and prices (go) higher ... It's distorting the market, which is supposed to be a free market," said Mr Goh, who added Singaporeans should discard the idea of public housing as an investment.

On tackling the problem of rising income inequality, Mr Giam suggested increasing the Workfare supplement for low-wage workers, which he concurred is a good policy to mitigate the plight of the poor.

"But if you look at the numbers, a typical person on Workfare only gets about S$80 more a month, hardly enough to sustain a decent lifestyle for someone that's not earning enough," he said.

When asked by a member of the floor about the possibility of doing away with NS, all the panellists disagreed with the suggestion - with the exception of Reform Party secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam, who felt that two years was too long.

"We would like to reduce NS to one year and review it later on and see if it can be shortened further," he said, using the example of Taiwan, "with their imminent threat of invasion" and still able to reduce it to six months.

On the issue of the ISA, the panellists were unanimous: Abolish it, although both WP's Mr Giam and RP's Mr Jeyaretnam said a fundamental human right of not being detained without trial should be balanced with the real need to deal with terrorism risks.

Mr Chiam described the ISA as "very dangerous and arbitrary".

Mr Giam suggested having a dedicated anti-terrorism taskforce that allows a certain form of preventive detention but with necessary checks and balances to ensure those detained have legal access and be released in the absence of evidence.

The sixth panellist at the forum -- which was attended by about 350 people -- was Socialist Front's Chia Ti Lik.

There was no representative from the PAP which, according to the organisers, was also invited.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Oppositions' views aired at forum".

BUS STOP DISTANCE CORRECTIONS: refund starts today

Many have voiced out their unhappiness about how some who travelled along the affected bus stops between 3 July 2010 and 25 November 2010 will need to get a full refund. I don't really know what to say to those ignoramuses who whined how troublesome it can be. They just are darn too lazy to read & find out how easy the refund process. (Bus operators will donate any unclaimed amount after the refund period which starts from today to June 17 next year! That's not enough time to find out how?!).

For those who sniggered on the apparent ineffectiveness of Distance Fares Calculator, well think about it this way: if there's no such service offered perhaps there will be more to refund or we may not aware that there're discrepancies in the first place. The bus operators are being honest, I'd say. So give them a chance, will you?!

PS. In this Public Transport@SG page, you can even check online for your refund amount. You just need to key in your 16-digit CEPAS card number which can be found on the back of your CEPAS card.

FROM Dec 18 to June 17, 2011, commuters affected by overcharging as a result of the bus stop distance corrections can get a full refund on the spot through the following channels:

i) Any TransitLink Add Value Machine (AVM - a purple machine), by placing their CEPAS card on the card reader and selecting the 'Bus Stop Distance Refund' icon on the screen. The system will automatically check and credit the total eligible refund amount into the card.

ii) Any TransitLink Ticket Office/Concession Card Replacement Office, by presenting their CEPAS card to the officer who will check and credit the total eligible refund amount into the card.

The AVMs, Ticket Offices and Concession Card Replacement Offices are located at most bus interchanges, MRT stations and selected bus stops. Commuters can check the list of locations at www.publictransport.sg.

Commuters can also check if they are eligible for a refund by keying in their 16-digit CEPAS card number at www.publictransport.sg or via an automated voice response system by calling the TransitLink Hotline at 1800 2255 663.

Bus operators will donate any unclaimed amount after the refund period - to the Public Transport Fund, which will benefit needy families.

Jayne Goh aka eastcoastlife aka president (?) of the Association (?) of Bloggers (Singapore) apologized for defamation

Boo to Jayne Goh aka eastcoastlife! And boo for Edvantage for putting across the fact that she's the so-called president of the Association of Bloggers (Singapore). When she's being sued for defamation (and admitted her mistake later on & thus apologized), she did so in her position as a mere blogger. Not to represent the organization--no matter how much credibility it lacks. (Just refer to "Association of Bloggers (Singapore) -- And soon there were none?!")

A blogger who was taken to court by an ex-teacher for defamation over an online post has apologised.

According to the Straits Times, blogger Jayne Goh, who was taken to court by retired teacher Mrs Janet Wong, posted an apology on her website and retracted her allegations.

The apology is seemingly part of the settlement of a suit that had been brought against her by Wong.

Goh, 43, an educational consultant who is president of the Association of Bloggers (Singapore), has admitted that she was wrong in claiming that Mrs Wong had been sacked and lost her retirement benefits.

She wrote on her blog: 'I accept that I was wrong when I made this allegation and I very much regret making it.

'I also made statements that could be construed as Janet Wong having personally received cash for placing students in the school.

'I regret making such statements that could have been construed in this way as it was not my intention to do so and I accept that they are untrue.'

In her blog post in 2008, Goh claimed Wong had personally received cash of about $3,000 for each foreign student she placed in the school. She further claimed that the entrance tests were rigged and that despite the sacking, no further investigation was conducted.

The blogger even pointed out an instance where a student had failed the test but was still given a place in the school.

Wong, now an education consultant, said the suit was brought about because Goh portrayed her to be corrupt, and in turn defamed her.

She also insisted that she had suffered considerable damage to her reputation and her request to Goh to take down the post down in 2008 was ignored.

Ms Goh had earlier insisted that her post was not about the former teacher but rather about the school system.

From Edvantage, "Blogger apologises to ex-teacher; retracts allegations". (17/12/10)

A FORMER teacher and a blogger are headed for a showdown in the courts in a defamation case.

When the teacher, Mrs Janet Wong, came across a blog by Madam Jayne Goh alleging that she took bribes from parents and guardians in return for places for their children in her school, she sued the blogger for defamation. Madam Goh also alleged that Mrs Wong was sacked for what she did.

Mrs Wong had sought a summary judgment from the High Court, which would have granted her a victory without the case going to trial, but Justice Steven Chong saw justification for a trial, which would blow open the web of online allegations and how 'reasonable readers' could be expected to have interpreted them.

This is believed to be the first case of alleged defamation by a blogger that will go to trial.

A trial means witnesses will be examined, evidence taken and submissions made; a summary judgment would have kept the matter in the judge's chambers, where lawyers fight the case based on claims made and documents admitted.

Mrs Wong, in her 50s and a retiree, says Madam Goh, 43, defamed her by alleging she had demanded $3,000 for each student placed in the secondary school, which was not named in court papers.

Boo-Boo Bear kills Yogi Bear - Adult Parody ending

In this adult parody ending of the movie, Yogi Bear, Boo-Boo Bear is shown killing Yogi Bear not without regret. Tragedy, perhaps. For the murdered bear for sure. Check out the clip, "Yogi Bear Parody: "Booboo Kills Yogi" here.

Ironic considering that Boo-Boo Bear is supposed to act as Yogi Bear's conscience. Well, at least that's what Wikipedia article said about this anthropomorphic bear cub.

Check out also what Wikipedia says about Yogi Bear that he "would often try to steal picnic". A thief bear, and I wonder why I once LOVED watching this show last time!

A PARODY ending of the upcoming Yogi Bear movie making its rounds on the internet is safe - for now.

A spokesman for Warner Brothers, which is releasing the movie, said that the studio won't be trying to take the clip down despite the considerably darker nature of the parody video, according to a New York Times blog posting.

The video, which was posted on YouTube on Monday morning, seems to be rendered in the same 3-D style as Yogi Bear, an animated feature starring Dan Aykroyd and Justin Timberlake, which will be released in the US on Friday.

The key difference is that the parody, which takes its cues from the 2007 Western ?The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,? ends with Boo Boo blasting Yogi with a shotgun (the violence is implied but not depicted on screen) and turning him into a bearskin rug.

At first, the video had viewers wondering if it was the handiwork of members of the Yogi Bear film team, due to the 'painstaking accuracy' of the satire, as well as the closing credits that named Yogi Bear director Eric Brevig, and producers Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt.

However, the clip now carries a disclaimer graphic at the beginning of the video that says the video is 'an independently made parody' by Edmund Earle, with no association to Warner Brothers or the producers, directors and actors of the 2010 Yogi Bear film'.

From Straits Times, "Yogi Bear parody safe for now".

A video parody of “Yogi Bear” that’s much darker than your average episode of that vintage Hanna-Barbera cartoon – not to mention the coming Warner Brothers film adaptation – isn’t a viral marketing campaign gone awry. But the studio said on Monday that it wouldn’t try to take down the Web satire, either.

The video, which was posted Monday morning on YouTube, appears to be rendered in the same 3-D style as “Yogi Bear,” an animated feature starring Dan Aykroyd (as the voice of Yogi) and Justin Timberlake (as his sidekick, Boo Boo) that Warner Brothers will release on Friday. The key difference is that the parody, which takes its cues from the 2007 Western “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” ends with Boo Boo blasting Yogi with a rifle (the violence is implied but not depicted on screen) and turning him into a bearskin rug.

The painstaking accuracy of the satire – as well as closing credits that named the “Yogi Bear” director, Eric Brevig, and producers, Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt – had some viewers wondering if it was the handiwork of members of the “Yogi Bear” film team, perhaps trying to win over some grown-up moviegoers before its release, or possibly protesting the dumbed-down content of their own movie.

But as a graphic added to the video now states, the video is “an independently made parody by Edmund Earle with no association to Warner Brothers or the producers, directors and actors of the 2010 ‘Yogi Bear’ film.”

A spokeswoman for Warner Brothers said on Monday evening that the studio had been in contact with Mr. Earle, a 25-year-old animator and graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, who was willing to add the disclaimer to his work. The studio said the video was likely a protected work of parody and it would have required an excessive amount of legal work to have it pulled from YouTube, if that were even possible. Warner Brother said YouTube turned down a request to have viewers input their age before playing the video (to keep impressionable young viewers from seeing it) but that YouTube would monitor the situation.

From the New York Times, "Warner Brothers Won’t Fight ‘Yogi Bear’ Video Parody".

Never say no to Panda!

Never say no to Panda! Check out this hilariously cool (and cruel) Panda getting violent when one says No to Panda! Haha!! 4.6 million viewers have been entertained by the clip. Are you one of them? ;)

Singapore WikiLeaks: Ties won't be affected?!?! Yeah right...

The Sydney Morning Herald published the article with a condemning title, "Top Singapore officials trash the neighbours". Singapore's Straits Times then printed a follow-up article with an optimistic title, "Leaks won't affect ties". Today, it's proven how wrong the view with Asiaone had an article, "Malaysia summons Singaporean diplomat over WikiLeaks".

MALAYSIA'S ''dangerous'' decline is fuelled by incompetent politicians, Thailand is dogged by corruption and a ''very erratic'' crown prince, Japan is a ''big fat loser'' and India is ''stupid''.

So say some of Singapore's highest-ranking officials, according to leaked US State Department cables that are likely to spark intense political controversy in the region.

The cables, leaked exclusively to The Sunday Age by WikiLeaks, detail the content of separate meetings between senior US officials and Singapore's foreign affairs chiefs Peter Ho, Bilahari Kausikan and Tommy Koh.

The trio, who at the time of the 2008 and 2009 cables occupied some of the most senior positions in Singapore's Foreign Affairs Ministry, all give US officials damning assessments of Malaysia.

According to one cable detailing a meeting in September 2008, Mr Kausikan told US Deputy Secretary of Defence for East Asia David Sedney that ''the situation in neighbouring Malaysia is confused and dangerous'', fuelled by a ''distinct possibility of racial conflict'' that could see ethnic Chinese ''flee'' Malaysia and ''overwhelm'' Singapore.

''A lack of competent leadership is a real problem for Malaysia,'' Mr Kausikan said, citing the need for Najib Razak - now Malaysia's Prime Minister - to ''prevail politically in order to avoid prosecution'' in connection with a 2006 murder investigation linked to one of Mr Razak's aides.

''Najib Razak has his neck on the line in connection with a high-profile murder case,'' Mr Kausikan said.

Mr Ho's March 2008 assessment of Malaysia, given to another US official, is also unflattering, and includes claims that former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been ''throwing stones'' at his replacement, Abdullah Badawi.

''The political knives will be out for Abdullah's son-in-law, United Malays National Organisation politician Khairy Jamaluddin, whom nobody likes because he got where he is through family ties,'' the cable records Mr Ho saying. ''As for … Najib Razak, he is an opportunist. Although he has not been critical of Singapore, he will not hesitate to go in that direction if it is expedient for him to do so. Najib's political fortunes continue to be haunted by the … murder scandal.''

In his September 2008 meeting with Mr Sedney, Mr Kausikan savages Thailand's political elite, labelling Thaksin Shinawatra as ''corrupt'' along with ''everyone else, including the opposition''.

Mr Kausikan is also critical of Thaksin's relationship with the Thai crown prince, stating that Thaksin ''made a mistake in pursuing a relationship with the crown prince by paying off the crown prince's gambling debts''.

''Kausikan said the crown prince was 'very erratic, and easily subject to influence','' the cable states, while also saying that Mr Kausikan warned of continued instability in Thailand.

In a September 2009 meeting with US officials, senior Singaporean foreign affairs official Tommy Koh savages Japan and India in relation to the impact on both countries of China's increasing regional might.

''Koh described Japan as 'the big fat loser' in the context of improving ties between China and ASEAN. He attributed the relative decline of Japan's stature in the region to Japan's 'stupidity, bad leadership, and lack of vision','' the cable says.

''He was equally merciless towards India, describing his 'stupid Indian friends' as 'half in, half out' of ASEAN.''

Other notable comments about regional affairs made by Mr Kausikan in September 2008 include his reported claims that:

■ Burma's neighbours, including China and India, are ''more concerned with stability than justice'' and they feared the Burmese junta's demise could produce ''an Asian reprise of the breakup of Yugoslavia''.

■ He would be ''more comfortable with a nuclear-capable North Korea, than a nuclear-capable Iran''.

■ Russia's economy is ''Third World'', its health system a shambles and its demographic challenges almost insurmountable.

Mr Koh is recorded praising China's ''investment and intelligent diplomacy in the region''.

''I don't fear China. I don't fear being assimilated by China,'' the cable states that Mr Koh said, while he pointed to China's decision to invest in Africa ''without lecturing them about human rights and democracy as the West does''.

From the Sydney Morning Herald, "Top Singapore officials trash the neighbours".

THE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) indicated on Monday that Singapore's relations with its neighbours will not be affected by the controversial WikiLeaks disclosures, as these relations are robust and built on strong foundations.

Responding to media queries, an MFA spokesman said: 'Singapore has longstanding, robust and positive relationships with all countries in our region.

'These relationships are built on a strong foundation of shared interests and mutually beneficial cooperation in many areas. Countries base relationships on their own interests, and not hearsay or gossip.'

The leaks in question contain barbed comments allegedly made by three senior Singapore diplomats. They took aim at several countries in the region and were released to the Australian media by the whistle-blowing website.

Echoing remarks made by Foreign Minister George Yeo on Sunday, the MFA spokesman noted that the Australian press reports were 'based on American interpretations of confidential conversations'.

They 'did not provide the full context and, in some cases, were from third party sources', the MFA spokesman said.

From Straits Times, "Leaks won't affect ties".

Malaysia on Tuesday summoned Singapore's ambassador to hand over a protest over "unjustified" remarks made by officials of the city-state and revealed by WikiLeaks.

Confidential diplomatic notes given by the whistle-blower website to Australia's Fairfax media group contained unflattering Singaporean assessments of its Asian allies, among them its neighbour Malaysia.

They reportedly included senior officials saying Kuala Lumpur lacked competent leadership and as a result, "the situation in neighbouring Malaysia is confused and dangerous".

Malaysian Foreign Minister Anifah Aman summoned T. Jasudasen, Singapore's high commissioner, and handed him a protest note over the "unjustified comments" made by Singaporean diplomats, the ministry said in a statement.

"The foreign minister also conveyed Malaysia's deep concern and displeasure over the comments as revealed by WikiLeaks and subsequently reported in the media," it added.

Singapore Monday expressed confidence that the WikiLeaks revelations would not hurt its "robust" ties with Malaysia, Thailand, India and Japan, all of which were the subjects of scathing comments by its officials.

According to a reported cable dated September 2008, Singaporean diplomats have said there is a "distinct possibility of racial conflict" in Malaysia which would see ethnic Chinese "flee" the country and "overwhelm" Singapore.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was reportedly described as "an opportunist" who "would not hesitate" to be critical of Singapore if "it is expedient for him to do so".

Singapore leaders also believe Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had sex with a male aide in a honey trap set by his enemies, a charge which Anwar has vehemently denied.

Anwar's supporters Tuesday handed a letter to Singapore's mission denouncing the remarks.

...Government action against corruption ineffective

As what said by 31 per cent of the 1,000 respondents here. Ouch. That hurts. Sure overall, Singapore was placed in the second-best tier of countries when it came to prevalence of petty bribery. Then again...

Singapore has done relatively well in the latest annual bellwether survey on anti-corruption by global civil society organisation Transparency International but some results of the survey, which was conducted online here, raised eyebrows among those whom MediaCorp contacted.

The 2010 Global Corruption Barometer - a public opinion survey done in 86 countries - found that overall, Singapore was placed in the second-best tier of countries when it came to prevalence of petty bribery.

Just nine per cent of those polled here said they had experienced such incidents.

But when asked to assess government action against corruption, 31 per cent of the 1,000 respondents here said these actions were ineffective, 40 per cent were undecided and 29 per cent said they were effective.

Commenting on the survey, Institute of Policy Studies senior research fellow Gillian Koh noted that citizens in some Western developed countries had a higher belief in the effectiveness of their governments' actions.

"While we do read about cases being prosecuted, perhaps the public might benefit from having more information on how the cases were uncovered in the first place," she said.

When contacted, GPC deputy chairman (Home Affairs and Law) Hri Kumar Nair reiterated that the majority of Singaporeans do think that government actions against corruption are successful and that the online survey may not paint an accurate picture.

Among 11 institutions picked for the poll, the media here were perceived to be the most affected by corruption.

But Singapore Management University law lecturer Eugene Tan said he felt that the difference in scores between institutions was too small to be meaningful and that the poll did not explain why the media was ranked lower.

GPC deputy chairman (Information, Communications and the Arts) Baey Yam Keng added: "The online survey might have attracted certain profiles, perhaps people who do not rely on the mainstream media (for news) ... that could be something when digesting this information."

Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Angry Birds Peace Treaty. Check out the hilarious clip. Heh.

ANGRY Birds, the extremely popular smart phone app, is a pop culture sensation, addicting mobile users at a rate nearly as impressive as the body count that its animated slingshot birds are racking up against their swine enemy.

Some 12 million copies of the 99-cent version of Angry Birds have been downloaded, with another 30 million downloads of its free app, which makes money through advertising. Peter Vesterbacka, head of development in North America for Rovio, the Finnish maker of Angry Birds, says the iPhone version of the game accounts for 65 million minutes of playtime every day - a total, he notes, that rivals the daily US prime-time TV audience.

On Saturday, the Angry Birds flock will be palpable. The one-year anniversary of the game's debut has been dubbed 'Angry Birds Day.' Around the world, hundreds of people are planning to congregate to celebrate their fondness for a silly diversion where birds do ceaseless battle with pigs.

More than 2.3 million people have watched the YouTube video Angry Birds Peace Treaty, a live-action sketch where a lawyer tries to broker a truce between the birds and the pigs, whose antagonism is based on the pigs stealing the birds' eggs.

Following a seasonal Halloween version of the game, a Christmas Angry Birds has been released, with each level opened like a day on an advent calendar. An Angry Birds 2 is due soon. It's moving to consoles like the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Rovio is also looking into making it available on Windows, the Chrome browser and Facebook. Plush toys of the birds have been released and are selling months ahead of inventory. Rovio now has 40 employees and is hiring more.

Rovio is also contemplating expansion into TV and film. Hed says he's spent a large amount of time 'exploring these areas.' 'There's a lot more Angry Birds,' he says.

From Straits Times, "Angry Birds keeps thriving".

Donate blood--not money!!

Singapore Red Cross Society, why can't you just concentrate on blood donation drives?

The latest news has the Red Cross lodged a police report against a admin assistant allegedly 'misappropriated' about $90.000! The Commissioner of Charities (COC) has advised the Singapore Red Cross not to conduct any fundraising activity.

However, upon checking the website of Singapore Red Cross Society, its page on "Financial Contribution | Make a donation to our local humanitarian services" is still available. Hmm...stubborn, huh? Or is it the word 'advise' taken a tad lightly?

Anyway, it may be an isolated case (No, we don't fancy to hear more cases of misappropriation of any admin assistants--how many do they have anyway?--in this Society). We don't want this noble Society to bleed to death, do we? Ha! Bad pun. Never mind. Just donate blood. You can do that every 3 months & you jolly well know that there's no such thing as 'blood being misappropriated'. Heh.

The Commissioner of Charities (COC) has advised the Singapore Red Cross not to conduct any fundraising activity until its internal investigation is completed and additional safeguards are put in place.

The advice came a day after the Red Cross issued a statement saying it had lodged a police report against a woman administrative assistant with the finance department who had allegedly misappropriated about $90,000.

The Red Cross said the problems were uncovered during internal checks on its accounts on 1 December. The discrepancies date back to February.

The COC also revealed that the Red Cross had earlier been selected to undergo a governance review in 2011.

This is an initiative to help charities and Institutions of Public Character (IPCs) to identify their governance gaps and to develop plans to address them.

The COC said this governance review on the Red Cross will be brought forward.

It reminded charities that they need to put in place proper internal controls and conduct regular checks to prevent misappropriation or misuse of funds.

Observers however said it is too early to judge if the case reveals a systemic fault or a one-off lapse.

Speaking to MediaCorp, corporate governance expert Mak Yuen Teen noted that such incident might occur "even in the best systems".

Dr Mak is an Associate Professor with the NUS Business School. He also sits on the board of the Charity Council.

He said: "The Red Cross is a fairly big organisation, so I guess we would expect them to have some basic controls or adequate internal controls in place. But having said that, even if you have those controls in place, sometimes they can be circumvented and so on. I think it's too early to tell, but at least the fact that this (alleged misappropriation) was picked up during an internal review tells me that part of that process is working."

From Channel NewsAsia, "Singapore Red Cross told to stop fundraising activity".

Update on 08/12: The Commissioner of Charities has clarified that the Singapore Red Cross is not prevented from receiving donations from its well-wishers and supporters. Ah. So that explains the still-functional link of the 'Financial Contribution' (screenshot above).

THE Singapore Red Cross Society has clarified that it can continue to receive donations from the public.

However, it has been advised against actively raising funds, for example in the form of direct mailers, charity bazaars and flag days.

This comes after a meeting between the society and the Commissioner of Charities (COC) yesterday.

The latter had earlier advised the Red Cross to stop all active fund-raising after an internal audit by the society last week revealed that an employee had allegedly misappropriated about $90,000 since February this year.

Red Cross, which is Singapore's lead relief agency, has since lodged a police report about the employee, who has been suspended from her duties.

It is also conducting internal investigations and reviews, and expects to submit a detailed report to the COC in the next two weeks.

From Straits Times, "Donations still allowed".
