Dr Chee Soon Juan as the Red Lantern??

I too like many of you enjoy the creativity of how politicians (mostly oppositions, so far) depicted in the movie poster.

But I draw a line & ought to voice out my objection when I read in Alvinology II post, "Singapore Election Candidates Spoof Movie Posters" (yes, there are many interesting artworks! Heh.) about how the above poster of Dr Chee Soon Juan is said to refer to the Flash. No Sir, he is no the Flash (not a flasher, either! Hur hur.). That poster for sure refers to that of the Green Lantern. The caption of "No evil shall escape my sight"--that's a giveaway as part of the Green Lantern's oath:

In brightest day, in blackest night,
No evil shall escape my sight
Let those who worship evil's might,
Beware my power... Green Lantern's light!

Green Lantern movie - scheduled to release in June this year!

But then, why is Dr Chee Soon Juan shown as the Red Lantern? (Yes, this character does exist. There's even the Red Lantern Corps, in fact.)

But as a Red Lantern, Dr Chee must aware that it is not altogether flattering. Check the oath of this rage-spectrum lantern:

With blood and rage of crimson red,
Ripped from a corpse so freshly dead,
Together with our hellish hate,
We'll burn you all--That is your fate!

Uh-huh. How appropriate if Dr Chee is perceived as a furious politician full of rage. Well, is he? Perception deceives. Just check out the following YouTube clip, "Chee Soon Juan delivers SDP's election message in Hokkien" in which he speaks so calmly. Yeah. Boring. But it has gathered 126,077 views so far. Well, puzzling...

Genting Singapore AGM 2011 ... now a_x is an enlightened shareholder?

Finally attending the Annual General Meeting of Genting Singapore. Heh. It was held this morning (1000 hrs) at West Ballroom, Resorts World Convention Centre, Basement 2, 8 Sentosa Gateway, Resorts World Sentosa. (Phew, that is a surprisingly long address, but it was easily found -- thanks to the well-organised staff readily available and with the clear signboard.)

This being the first AGM I intended to attend, I came early. More than enough time to go to the membership counter & applied a Genting Rewards Cardmember. See, there was this bonus 18 GP (Genting Points) awarded for shareholder. (Last year it was 36 points given--but I was unable to be present during last year AGM & thus the points unacclaimed.)

The Executive Chairman of Genting Singapore Mr. Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay & the Director/President and Chief Operating Officer Mr Tan Hee Teck were the ones who did most of the talk (Darn, they did sound very convincing & assuring! Public speaking IS a must if you're a leader, I reckon) and patiently answered the questions from shareholders.

I must emphasized the word 'patiently'. Some shareholders did ask the questions very much irrelevant. For example somebody complained no parking coupon given (actually there were, but they ought to register first!), another made a fuss about the financial report sent in form of a CD (despite the form also given for the shareholders to choose their report sent in an actual booklet), one joker remarked that shareholders were not given water unlike the directors (There were water bottles outside, you lazy bum!!)

Credits to both Mr Tan-s on how patient they answered the ridiculous questions.

Anyway, thank goodness there were other more intelligent questions raised. A lot to learn, in fact. Heh.

1. See, I told you I came early!!

2. When there were more people seated...

3. Yeah. More.

4. An exhausted me trying to take a photo of the lunch packet provided by Genting.

5. Second attempt. (No third attempt because the guy eating beside me started to look annoyed! Heh. Inside the red paper box were a plastic glass full with assorted cuts of fruits and a big piece of sandwich.)

Undependable independent candidates???

There were supposed to be 7 independent candidates who might have fancied thinking themselves as Seven Samurai (good show, highly recommended!). Alas, in the real world, their earlier expression to contest in the coming GE is proven to be insufficient.

Four independent candidates make it to the news today. But all with the wrong reason. First is Zeng Guo Yuan who torn his nomination form in panic when reminded by a reporter that he had an unpaid fine due to a previous conviction for molesting a woman. Boo!!

Second and third are about Ooi Boon Ewe and Boon Suan Ban involved in frenetic scrambles to find enough assentors to back their bids for Sengkang West and Mountbatten respectively. Poor planning. They should have gone together with assentors & not last minute, running around crying for help! Double Boo!!

Forth is about Ng Teck Siong who because of his timekeeping (or lack of it) has his candidacy (and four others with him) rejected. Thus, residents of Tanjong Pagar GRC have lost their chances to vote.

Sad. It's always endearing to see independent candidates really battling against the giant political parties. We won't see such a battle happen here for sure. No "Davids vs Goliaths" kind of epic shall be witnessed for (again) this year GE. The only thing that the independent candidates might have gained is publicity. Congratulations!!

Independent candidates Ooi Boon Ewe, a 70-year-old former tutor, and Mr Boon Suan Ban, a 53-year-old remisier with OCBC, were involved in frenetic scrambles to find enough assentors to back their bids for Sengkang West and Mountbatten respectively.

A third, Mr Zeng Guo Yuan, turned up in a yellow baju kurung and a songkok. When reminded by a reporter that he had an unpaid fine - from a previous conviction for molesting a woman - that could bar him from running, he tore up an envelope, believed to contain his nomination documents, and stormed off.

Although up to seven Independent candidates had earlier expressed interest in contesting the GE, none made it to the contest in the end, just like in the 2006 GE.

Partially quoted from TODAY, "The drama on nomination day ...".

The team of independent candidates alleged that they were treated unfairly in their attempt to file their nomination papers to contest the Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC) - leading to their disqualification - but the Elections Department declared yesterday that everything was done according to the law.

Socialist Front chairman Ng Teck Siong said he and a team mate, former Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS) secretary-general Nazem Suki, had submitted their nomination forms 5 minutes before the official deadline at noon.

However, the team alleged, they were disqualified on a technicality and for submitting their forms late.

Setting the record straight in a statement issued yesterday evening, an Elections Department spokesperson said: "A group of aspiring candidates turned up at the Nomination Centre at Singapore Chinese Girls' School but they did not deliver their nomination papers with the necessary documentation on time."

The spokesperson cited the Parliamentary Elections Act which states that the papers would be rejected if all procedures such as "every nomination paper and GRC certificates shall be delivered … (by) persons seeking nomination …" are not carried out between 11am and noon.

Mr Ng's five-man team left hastily after a walkover was declared in Tanjong Pagar GRC, which is led by Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

When reporters caught up with them, the team members, who had scrambled to raise funds through social media and by getting help from local actresses, were visibly upset.

"We suffered a loss in terms of our time and effort. I'm sad and disappointed," said Mr Ng.

According to Mr Ng, the team turned up at 11.25am but their seconder, who he claimed had been "threatened", did not turn up.

Upon submitting amended forms, Mr Ng claimed the team was disqualified.

He said the team intends to file a complaint with the Elections Department alleging bias .

Both Mr Ng and Mr Nazem could not be reached for further comments following the Elections Department's response to their allegations.

The two men's unsuccessful bid to stand in Tanjong Pagar GRC - uncontested since 1991 - will also leave Mr Nazem and Mr Ng without any political party membership.

The PKMS confirmed that it had received Mr Nazem's resignation filed yesterday morning.

Earlier, the Socialist Front also said that Mr Ng would have to resign if he chose to contest with another party. Its secretary-general Chia Ti Lik said yesterday that the party has not received any word from Mr Ng.

From TODAY, "Independent team was late with their forms".

This Singaporean lady engineer learnt from porn to save her marriage...

Two words: well done!! So porn films should be legalised in Singapore then? A happy marriage is very likely leading to more children. (Especially if those porn films 'discourage' the use of protection. Heh.)

AN ENGINEER saved her marriage using the 'tricks' she learned from porn films, China Press reported.

The Singaporean woman said she started watching porn films after reading a pornographic magazine sent by her friend from Australia eight years ago.

However, she said, she became addicted to these films about three years ago after her husband started giving her the cold shoulder.

The 32-year-old said she learned many tips sexually and emotionally in managing a relationship from the films, and saved her marriage.

From Straits Times, "Engineer saved her marriage by watching porn".

Who is the stupid guy who declared on the Internet he inteded to burn his voting slip & ballot box on Polling Day?!

Stupid guy. What a waste of resources by the Singapore Police Force to investigate & nab this idiot! Please fine him mercilessly!!

The Singapore Police Force have arrested a male Singaporean for declaring on the Internet that he intended to burn his voting slip and ballot box on Polling Day.

Police officers arrested the 32-year-old suspect at his Ang Mo Kio home on April 25 after they received information about him.

Follow-up investigations showed that the suspect had posted comments online about intending to burn his voting slip and ballot box on Polling Day.

He was also believed to have posted a comment that suggested causing hurt to Members of Parliament.

The subject was arrested for the offence of Communicating an Electronic Record Containing Incitements to Violence under the Penal Code.

If found guilty, he can be imprisoned up to 5 years, fined, or both.

A statement released by the police said the force takes threats of violence to the conduct of the electoral process and threats of violence against persons seriously.

Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hoong Wee Teck said those who made such remarks online and think that they can hide behind the Internet's anonymity will be found out.

"Police will investigate such reports and spare no efforts in taking the culprits to task," he said.

From Asiaone, "Man arrested for threatening to burn voting slip and ballot box".

Wei Shu Ya ... an NTU student survived the knife in her head

Wei Shu Ya. Is she another student with the power of rapid cellular regeneration like the TV series Heroes' Claire Bennet? How can she survive the horrible wound due to knife embedded in her head?

A Nanyang Technological University (NTU) student was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon in what is suspected to be an attempted suicide, after she was found in her hostel room with a knife still embedded in her head.

The incident occurred at NTU's Hall of Residence 1, Block 16.

According to a Shin Min Daily report, the Chinese foreign student was found in a bloodied state by her roommate, who returned to the dormitory to find it locked from the inside.

The roommate then peered into the room through the window and was shocked to find Wei Shu Ya, 21, sprawled motionless on her bed, with the knife protruding from her head.

The Henan native was also found with lacerations on her wrist and other injuries.

The roommate immediately informed security and called for an ambulance.

When medics arrived, they found blood streaming down her face, but her eyes remained open and she was still conscious, reported the Chinese Daily.

But the second-year bio-engineering student shouted and struggled when medics tried to lift her onto the stretcher.

Wei was taken National University Hospital (NUH), where she is reported to be in a stable condition.

According to a police statement, a call was received on April 25 at about 1.10pm informing them that a woman was found lying motionless at NTU.

They are still investigating the case.

An excellent student

According to Shin Min, Wei was an outstanding student, who was on the dean's list in her first year at NTU.

She also reportedly graduated from a Finnish university in 2008.

Her roommate has since moved out of the hostel room after the incident, reported the Chinese daily.

From Edvantage, "NTU student found with knife in head".

... and a "Girlfriend"

Yeah. You need a "Girlfriend"! Admit it. (Kind of sexist, really. Just like in the previous post of You need a "Boyfriend"!)

You need a "Boyfriend"...

Lol. I love how sullen the expression of the 'boyfriend'.

Joo Chiat drama: Woman kneels in carpark after car gets clamped (or on bended knee, she saved $100)

The real drama and the song I imagine she was singing while she's kneeling & crying. Heh. Am I evil (of course, I am definitely not going to be one of those good samaritans who'll give her a money to have her car unclamped. Why should I? I'm no car driver, myself. So there!)

Mister...I, I can't explain,
Why did I park this way,
'But it's driving me insane.
And I know I just need one more chance,
To prove I no money.
And if you come back to me,
I'll guarantee,
That I'll still be kneeling here.

Heh. Sorry. The lyrics above are much inspired by this song by BoysII Men, "On Bended Knee".

The second part of her "Cry of Sorrow on Bended Knee (Letting go $100 is a hard thing to do)" would be inspired by "I'm Sailing". So imagine the tune (just go to YouTube, will you?!):

I am crying, I am crying,
Still right here, you can see.
I am crying, really bo chap,
To save money, to be free!!

And the last part of her 'song' can be using the tune of U2's Vertigo:

Hello, Hello (¡Hola!)
I'm at a place called Joo Chiat Road (¿Dónde está?)
It's somewhere I wish I had not parked
Because you clamped my poor car right away,
Sobs...!

THE sign at the private carpark at Joo Chiat Road states clearly that unauthorised cars that park there would be wheel-clamped.

Not only did a woman driver ignore the sign and park her car there for almost three hours, she refused to pay the $100 fee to have her car unclamped when the inevitable happened.

Worse, she started crying and kneeling down in front of the parking attendant, and begged him to let her off the hook.

And she did it for a full 30 minutes until some sympathetic passers-by pooled their money to pay the fee for her.

All these antics came from a woman who can afford to drive a mid-range continental car and employ a domestic helper - just to escape paying $100 for something she did wrong in the first place.

Her actions have resulted in the 58-year-old attendant, who wanted to be known only as Mr Teng, being labelled as uncompassionate and heartless - for doing his job.

Mr Teng does not dispute the claims that he was unmoved by her tears and had even watched her cry as she knelt in front of him.

He said he was annoyed with the woman because she refused to give him the $100 to unclamp her car.

He said he had no sympathy because he believed it was just all an act from her, since she had initially held out two $50 notes but refused to give it to him.

The woman, whom he said looked to be in her 30s, had tried to pull her "pitiful" act even before she started kneeling, he said.

Mr Teng told The New Paper in Mandarin: "She was crying for a long time."

He said that even if he felt sorry for her, he could not unclamp the wheel without charging her since he had already issued the notice.

If he had let her off, he would have had to account for the $100 feeand pay it out of hisownpocket.

Only residents and patrons of the row of shophouses along the carpark are allowed to park there.

It began at 7.10pm on Sunday when Mr Teng noticed a car with an unfamiliar licence plate in the carpark managed by Bronsan Inters-furni Contracts & Services.

At the car park's entrance and the exit are signs stating: "Unauthorised parking will be wheel clamped without prior notice."

The signs also clearly state that the carpark is private property, and that the release fee for the wheel clamp is $100.

After checking that the car did not belong to a customer of any of the shops there, including the I Love U KTV Pub, he placed a warning notice under a windshield wiper.

He returned about 15 minutes later and found the car still parked.

Protocol

According to protocol, Mr Teng is required to give a 15-minute grace period before clamping an illegally parked vehicle. He must also take a photograph (with a time stamp) to showthe time he clamped the vehicle.

In the woman's case, the photo showed that it was 7.29pm. He then went about his duties and received a call from the woman at 9.06pm.

She had called the number written on the notice.

When he returned to the carpark, he told the womanwhyhehad clamped her car.

Mr Teng claimed that the woman acknowledged her mistake and hewrote out a receipt for the $100 fee.

She held out two $50 notes but refused to release her grip whe nhe tried to take them.

Not wanting to create a scene, he let go of the notes.

"I told her that I had no time to play because I needed to patrol the other places," Mr Teng said.

He is required to patrol four carparks in the area so heis always on the move, he said.

He warned her that the management had the authority to tow away her car if she left it there for more than three hours, and that she would have to bear the cost.

Mr Teng claimed that he spoke politely to her throughout their encounter.

While speaking to her, he said he noticed three boys and a girl playing with the wheel clamp as a domestic helper stood nearby.

After he told her that her car could be towed away, he heard the woman tell her maid to take the children home.

What happened next shocked him. As soon the children and maid were out of sight, the woman started crying.

After a short while, Mr Teng decided to go about his duties.

"When I came back after about 20 minutes, she was still there crying. Then she started kneeling.

"So I sat on a chair outside the KTV and watched her. You can't expectmeto be moved by her tears. I am only doing my job. If I help her, who's going to help me if I lose my job?"

Mr YH Lim, who is in charge of the estate management committee, confirmed the management would find out if Mr Teng had released a vehicle without collecting the $100 penalty.

This is because warning notices and receipts are numbered in sequence.

But some regulars at the KTV pub felt sorry for the woman.

Mr Daniel Goh, 42, who works in sales, was in the pub when his friend, who arrived at about 9.45pm, told him about a woman kneeling on the road.

After the pub staff told him she had been kneeling for half an hour, he went out to check on her.

Said Mr Goh: "It was a pitiful sight. She was begging the attendant to unclamp her wheel but he didn't care."

The sight of her tears as she knelt beside her dark blue Opel Vectra GTS touched Mr Goh and his four friends so much that they chipped in to pay the $100 fee.

"Initially, the carpark attendant did not want to accept our money. But after one of my friends told him off, he agreed.

"If anyone else saw it, I think they would have helped her too," said Mr Goh.

Shocked that she had money

He said the woman offered to return the money to him another day, but they told her it wasn't necessary and asked her to get up and leave.

When TNP told Mr Goh about Mr Teng's claim that the woman had the $100 to pay the fee, he was shocked.

He said: "If she had money in the first place, why did she want to kneel there and look like a stupid fool?"

He did not want to comment on whether he would still have helped her.

After Shin Min Daily News reported on the incident on Monday, readers called to claim that Mr Teng was notorious for being mean.

Mr Goh also said he had heard stories that Mr Teng was unreasonable.

Staff from the pub said that Mr Teng would "hide" inside the pub - sitting at a table behind a one-way glass pane that gave a view of the carpark - so he could pounce on illegally parked cars.

They also claimed that he is fierce and does not give offenders a second chance.

When told of the accusations, Mr Teng became upset and reiterated that he is merely doing his job.

Contrary to what some pub workers and regulars had told TNP, he said that he earns a fixed wage as a part-time worker and does not get commission from clamping people's wheels.

He claimed: "They (Mr Goh and his friends) are unhappy that I clamped one of their cars before."

The estate management said the shophouses would go en bloc at the end of May, so only a few residents are still living there.

'You want to park, be prepared to pay'

HER tears may have persuaded five men to pool their money to pay the $100 fine to get her car unclamped.

But all 11 people The New Paper spoke to wouldn't be quite so easily swayed.

While none of them said that they would give her money, some said that they might offer her tissue paper to wipe away her tears or a mobile phone to call someone to bring her the cash.

Some laughed when told of the situation, and one even criticised her for crying.

The consensus was that the woman deserved to have her car wheel clamped.

Said full-time national serviceman Mr Davis Koh, 22: "I think the gentlemen did their part, but as for the lady, crying by the road and hoping for something to happen is childish."

He added that he would not give her any money as he did not believe that she could not afford to pay the $100 fine.

Real estate agent Michael Arriola, 48, agreed, and said: "Looking at the car she drives and the fact that she employs a domestic helper, I don't think she has trouble affording it.

"She knew the consequences. So she should pay for it herself."

Mr Arriola felt that if the woman had been driving a less expensive car, he might be inclined to help.

Bank officer Cynthia Wee, 47, felt that the woman should have been more mature about the situation.

She said: "Knowing that it is private property, why park there?

"If you want to park, be prepared to pay. We can't have mercy for such people.

"The attendant was just doing his job."

Equally unsympathetic was university student Wayne Chua, 24.

He said: "I got wheel-clamped before, and I had left my wallet in the office.

"So I just called my friends to bring me money."

Mentos the Freshmaker ... a killer ad!!

When I said 'killer', I meant it literally. Heh. Next time, do watch out when you run to a watercooler & hit on someone who may soon consume a Mentos & hit you silly to the death with a Joker-like grin. Haha!

Such a simple lyric of the classic advertisement of Mentos. Endearing, though.

'Doo doo doo doo, doo-doo, do-Wah!'
It doesn't matter what comes, fresh goes better in life, and Mentos is fresh and full of life.

Nothing gets to you, staying fresh staying cool, with Mentos, fresh and full of life.

Fresh goes better, Mentos freshness, fresh goes better with Mentos, fresh and full of life!

Zeng Guoyan ... an independent candidate who once went to jail for 3 months, instead of paying $3,000 fine for misusing banners of Mas Selamat??

Zeng Guoyan or to be precise 'Professor' Zeng Guoyan (Like many others, I'm interested to learn from which university he earned his title) is making to the top story with his intention to be an independent candidate for the coming General Election.

A lot of aura of mystery about him, alright. When I seek to google 'zeng guoyan' to find out more about him, I came across this rather unflattering article about him.

The title is "Ex-WP candidate fined $3000" and here's the excerpt:

A BUSINESSMAN who put up banners of escaped Jemaah Islamiah detainee Mas Selamat Kastari without permission was fined a total of $3,000 yesterday.

But Zeng Guoyan chose to go to jail for three weeks instead of paying the fine of $1,000, the maximum, on each of the three charges.

The 56-year-old was convicted by District Judge Jasbendar Kaur after a six-day trial.

He was found guilty of having put up a notice which had a picture of Mas Selamat and the word 'DEAD' on the wall outside a shop in Tai Thong Crescent on March 20 last year. Mas Selamat escaped from detention at the Whitley Road Detention Centre in February.

Zeng did not have the permission of United Premas, the occupier of the building, for his act.

On Dec 22, while under police investigation for that offence, Zeng hung a banner with a picture of the detainee in the common corridor outside his shop selling hair products at Block 69, Lorong 4 Toa Payoh.

A week later, he attached another banner, together with a charge sheet from the prosecutor against him, to a pillar at the same building.

A Workers' Party candidate in the 1991 elections, Zeng claimed he was not the person who put up the banners, and that he did not know who had done it.

At first, he said that the police were trying to frame him.

He also claimed he was entitled to a quarter share of the $1 million reward for the capture of Mas Selamat, now in detention in Malaysia after being caught in Johor on April 1.

Pressed by the court on who he suspected had put up the banners, Zeng claimed he had many enemies, and that someone was trying to be 'funny' with him.

In his closing arguments, Deputy Public Prosecutor Eugene Lee said the man was clearly a witness of little credit, levelling numerous unfounded allegations against the police and other witnesses from the prosecution.

He also argued that Zeng was 'constantly shifting his evidence' and showed a blatant disregard for the truth.

Zeng, who was unrepresented, has claimed trial to three other charges of failing to turn up at Tanglin Police Division for interviews between August and September last year over the Tai Thong Crescent incident.

A pre-trial conference has been set for Dec 23.

He has past convictions for outrage of modesty in 1988 and 1996, criminal intimidation and causing hurt.

Interesting if the article is indeed true, can one who had such criminal convictions in the past be running for a post of MP? I don't know. Of course there's a possibility the article is incorrect.

So let's google for 'zeng guoyan molest'. There's one result catches my eyes. It's from one work by Jack Tsen-Ta Lee from Singapore Management University. The article published in January 1999 is titled, "Workplace Sexual Harassment in Singapore: The Legal Challenge".

The name 'zeng guoyan' appeared twice in the footnote of page 71 (footnotes 188 & 190).

From footnote 188:
Chandresh Patel, supra n 186, affirmed in Lee Kwang Peng v Private Prosecutor [1997] 3 SLR 278 (HC) and Zeng Guoyan v Public Prosecutor [1997] 3 SLR 321 (HC). Caning will only be ordered where the act of molest involves the complainant’s private parts: Zeng Guoyan, ibid. In the latter case, the defendant was sentenced to 3 strokes of the cane for touching the complainant’s breast, and another 4 strokes for touching her groin.

From footnote 190:
Zeng Guoyan, supra n 188 (the conduct of defendant, who represented himself during the trial, was characterised by the court as “reprehensible” — among other things, he alleged the complainant was a “willing partner” although his defence was one of denial, humiliated the complainant on the witness stand, asked her irrelevant questions, and badgered her to such an extent that she broke down on two occasions)

The fair question we need to ask is whether this is the same Zeng Guoyan? Of course there may be different Zeng Guoyan. And yes, we should be learning more about him (in fact about all the candidates) without any prejudice.

So who can answer the above question then? Anyone? Mainstream media?

RETIRED acupuncturist Zeng Guoyuan, 57, who had announced his plans to contest the May 7 elections as an independent candidate said that he would vote for the People's Action Party (PAP) in his own ward, in Toa Payoh Central.

Mr Zeng who greeted the PAP MPs of Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC during their walkabout on Friday morning told Dr Ng Eng Hen that he would be probably be contesting in Mountbatten. But in Toa Payoh, the PAP will have his vote.

Later he told reporters that he supports the PAP team as it had done a good job in the Bishan-Toa Payoh constituency.

'Mr Wong Kan Seng had done a good job. He had looked after the people well,' he said, with one of his pet parrots perched on his shoulder.

Mr Zeng, who was a Workers' Party candidate in Bukit Timah in 1991, said he will stand in Mountbatten as long as there are no more than three candidates standing there.

The father of two was last in the news in December 2009, when he was fined $3,000 for putting up banners - featuring a picture of terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari - without approval. He said the banners were sunshades to protect his shops.

From Straits Times, "Independent candidate wants to vote for PAP".

With his grand master-like appearance, Professor Zeng Guoyan exuded an aura of mystery when he appeared at the Elections Department to pick up his nomination form on Thursday.

The owner of a chain of medical shops called Prof. Zeng Medical Centre, Zeng revealed that he will be contesting as an independent candidate come May 7.

"It is better for me to run single. I do not need anybody behind me. I can stand alone on my own feet," said the 57-year-old.

Zeng, who is apparently a retired professor from the Open International University, is not new to Singapore politics. He contested in the Bukit Timah ward in the 1991 General Election under the Workers' Party (WP).

When asked why he left WP, Zeng gave a cryptic response, "Put it this way, in politics, all the crows are black.

"You either run a party for yourself, or for the people. You can only serve one master, not two. A lot of politicians, at the end of the day, end up serving themselves," he added, before clarifying that he was not referring to the people from WP.

Keeping his cards close to his chest, Zeng declined to reveal which constituency he wants to contest, only replying "we will see".

"The opportunity this time is very good. People know an opposition is required. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

He told reporters that Singapore's high property prices is the main issue he would like to champion.

"Housing is unaffordable. I pity the young people who are unable to buy their own flat. Now, all you can do is 'rent' a flat from the government for 99 years, and that is too much.

"Last time, whatever we touched turned to gold. But now, what you touch, like your COE, ends up being worth zero after a few years," said Zeng.

He indicated that he will behave like a "philosopher" if voted into Parliament, where he will "say one thing and stick to it regardless of time", as opposed to being a "politician" who makes different promises to different people.

From Yahoo! News, "Medical shop owner to contest in SMC?".

Sasha Grey is going to Indonesia...Not?!

US Porn Star Sasha Grey to Visit Indonesia This Month? Right...

The news published on 20 April 2011 was quickly debunked by Sasha Grey herself.

Check out this facebook page of hers: "A production company reported to local Indonesian news that I'll be visiting the country; this is false. I was never asked to attend any events, thanks to the fans for addressing this!"

American porn queen Sasha Grey is scheduled to land in Jakarta later this month to attend the release of the latest Indonesian horror movie featuring foreign porn stars.

Sasha stars in K2K Production's “Pocong Mandi Goyang Pinggul” (“Shrouded Corpse Bathing While Hip-Shaking”).

The movie's producer KK Dheraj told Tempointeraktif.com that Sasha will arrive on April 28, and will stay in the country for five days.

“Yes, she will come. She will come and be escorted by six bodyguards,” Dheraj said on Tuesday, adding that the production house would hire about 50 people to guard the porn starlet.

Hard-liner group the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) had previously stated that it disapproved of Sasha's stepping foot in the country. In the past, the FPI had threatened to blockade the arrival of foreign porn stars such as Japanese starlet Maria Ozama aka Miyabi, who was also featured in a local horror movie.

The movie is the latest in a growing list of Indonesian productions employing foreign porn stars to generate box-office hype. Previous cameos have been done by Miyabi, Rin Sakuragi and Sora Aoi, as well as US porn queen Tera Patrick.

From Jakarta Globe, "US Porn Star Sasha Grey to Visit Indonesia This Month".

Petite American ex-porn star Sasha Grey is scheduled to land in Jakarta on 28 April to attend the launch of K2K Production's Indonesian horror movie "Pocong Mandi Goyang Pinggul" (translated as "Shrouded Corpse Bathing While Hip-Shaking").

Movie producer KK Dheraj was quoted as saying Sasha will stay in the country for five days. "Yes, she will come. She will be escorted by six bodyguards from her side and we ourselves will hire about 50 people to guard the porn starlet."

"She's here to promote the movie together with co-stars Sheza Idris, Annisa Bahar and Baby Margaretha."

The movie is the latest in a growing list of Indonesian productions employing foreign porn stars to generate box-office hype.

Previous appearances, cameos or otherwise, have been done by Maria Ozawa, Rin Sakuragi and Sora Aoi, as well as US porn queen Tera Patrick, for movies such as "Hantu Tanah Kusir", "Menculik Miyabi" and "Suster Keramas".

Maria Ozawa especially, was at the centre of controversy for her run-in with religious authorities in the world's most populous Islamic nation, who were intent on barring her entry. Known in AV circles as a passionate performer who is unusually intelligent, Sasha has won numerous industry awards between 2007 and 2010.

It is learned that this is the first time the 23-year-old AV actress is visiting the Asian continent, notwithstanding Australia.

Born Marina Ann Hantzis on 14 March 1988, Sasha has recently turned to mainstream acting, modelling and music.

After her mainstream feature film debut as the lead in Steven Soderbergh's 2009 experimental drama "The Girlfriend Experience", she shifted her focus to acting, starring in the black comedy - horror film "Smash Cut" as April Carson, as well as having a supporting role in season 7 of HBO's "Entourage".

She has also appeared in independent films "Quit", "The Girl From The Naked Eye" and Mark Pellington's "I Melt With You".

On 8 April 2011, she officially announced her retirement from adult films on social media site Facebook.

Singtel "Amateur Housewives" ... the solution to Singapore's declining birthrate?!

To answer that question, we need to know the game first hand. But alas, Singtel has removed the game from its website game content.

Singtel has taken off from its website game content which a member of the public has called "sexually explicit".

These games, which were listed right next to the categories labeled Disney and Kids, required neither username nor password for download.

This meant that any member of the public, including the under-aged, had access to these games, according to Ms Karen Lim who alerted reporters.

In an email statement to Mediacorp, Ms Lim highlighted that she saw "pages of naughty games with sexual, lesbian connotations."

Ms Lim also provided webpage screenshots depicting scantly clad women with titles such as "Amateur Housewives".

Descriptions of the downloadable games included "real housewives with naughty fantasies" and "if you have the nerve you will be able to catch them cheating".

"I was taken aback", said Ms Lim, "on a respectable site, this is terribly shocking with suggestive pictures".

Ms Lim said the response by Singtel had been dissatisfactory when she raised the issue with the customer service department.

She has written to the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS) about the content which she sees as inappropriate.

A SingTel spokesperson said, "recently, some mobile gaming content was not presented in the best possible way and this caused concern for a customer. We have taken that feedback seriously and removed the content. We can assure our customers that this was not explicit adult content."

Seperately, M1 has also removed games from its website which Ms Lim complained about.

The content of the games, while not sexually explicit, conveyed a sexy theme.

In an email statement from M1, Mr Ivan Lim, Deputy Director for Corporate Communications & Investor Relations, said that it was "an isolated incident and strict investigations are currently undergoing to ascertain how the contents slipped through our filtering system."

From Channel NewsAsia, "Singtel removes "sexually explicit" game content from website".

Many Singaporeans support the Budget Statement to raise productivity but there's one topic creating a buzz online.

The country's declining birth rate was a top concern during a webchat with Community Development Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

This is part of the government's feedback channel, REACH's move to find out what people think of this year's Budget initiatives.

Despite the government's slew of measures including longer maternity leave and cash incentives, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) plummeted from 1.6 in 2000 to 1.23 last year, a far cry from the 2.1 needed for the population to replace itself.

In fact, the ministry's target this year is to raise the TFR from 1.23 to 1.29.

During the webchat, it was clear that some felt Singaporeans have to take it upon themselves to set up families. Others feel the government should provide more incentives.

Dr Balakrishnan said: "A major factor for that fall was that the economy went into a tailspin last year. So we shouldn't over-react to that. We've just enhanced the package a year ago, so I'd rather wait to see how things pan out in this year, with the economic recovery. And then later on if need be, we'd consider making enhancements."

Another issue raised during the webchat was that there were some who felt that the middle-income households were left out.

Dr Balakrishnan said: "The overall restructuring of our economy will change the tenor of our society and ultimately change productive capacity of Singaporeans.

"Unfortunately these are long-term things and you won't see instant results. But if we can sustain this course, the overall impact on our society in the next five to 10 years, will actually be very major."

From Channel NewsAsia, "Singapore's declining birth rate one of people's top concerns".

Heineken Commercial 2011 - The Asteroids Galaxy Tour

Tune Hotels IPO

Check out the website of Tune Hotels at www.tunehotels.com. I like the simplicity of the website. The thrill of choosing your own 'add on-s' is evident when you try to book for a room & given a selection of the 'enhancements' such as: air conditioning, towel rental (?!), entertainment package (no, not that kind of entertainment! They refer to 32-inch LCD TV with 11 channels), wireless internet access, hair dryer, breakfast set, hotel insurance, coaches to Resort World Sentosa/Marina Bay Sands.

(KUALA LUMPUR) Tune Hotels Regional Services Sdn, the budget hotel chain owned by Tony Fernandes, head of South-east Asia's biggest low-cost carrier, may go public in early 2013 to expand its hospitality network, its chief executive officer said.

Tune Hotels, a unit of investment company Tune Group led by Mr Fernandes, aims to have as many as 60 hotels across 10 countries including the UK and India by the end of 2012, said Mark Lankester, CEO of the hospitality group. The goal is to operate 100 by 2014, he said in an interview in Petaling Jaya, outside Kuala Lumpur.

'We need to raise more capital to invest and continue the brand-growing,' Mr Lankester said in an interview on Tuesday. 'For us to continue growing, the cheapest capital is always going to be public capital. Securing public capital through an IPO (initial public offering) makes a lot of sense.'

Mr Fernandes, 46, is aiming to repeat his success with AirAsia Bhd, which was listed in 2004 and overtook national carrier Malaysian Airline System Bhd (MAS) last year to become the country's biggest airline by market value. AirAsia's shares have doubled in the past year, while MAS has fallen 18 per cent.

AirAsia has said that it intends to spin off and list its Thai and Indonesian units this year, while its long-haul associate AirAsia X Sdn may sell shares in Europe and Asia in 2012.

Tune Group, which Mr Fernandes co-founded with AirAsia's deputy CEO Kamarudin Meranun, invested in businesses ranging from hotels, prepaid mobile phone services to online financial products.

Petaling Jaya-based Tune Hotels, which is profitable, has been reinvesting its income to grow the business, Mr Lankester said, without disclosing its earnings. The company is preparing itself for an IPO and has yet to decide which stock exchange it would be listed on.

Tune Hotels adopts a so-called 'demand-driven' pricing model similar to AirAsia's, which encourages guests to book ahead in order to secure cheaper room rates.

While international hotel operators including France's Accor SA have set up economy brands such as Ibis and All Seasons targeting the budget-conscious travellers, they do not compete directly in the bargain-bucket segment targeted by Tune Hotels, said Malaysian Association of Hotels vice-president Ivo Nekvapil.

'It's absolutely a good idea because they are basically a one-star hotel concept,' Mr Nekvapil said in a phone interview yesterday. 'There's not much competition in that space.'

Tune Hotels has expanded to 12 properties in Malaysia, Indonesia and the UK since the opening of its first hotel in downtown Kuala Lumpur four years ago. Development deals are signed to add another 90 assets in South-east Asia, Australia, London and India, Mr Lankester said.

While the company owns most of the hotels currently under operation, it has accelerated the expansion through partnerships and franchise arrangements, he said. Tune Hotels teamed up with UK-based investment company Queensway Group Ltd last year to develop and run 15 properties in the Greater London area by 2017, and it is working with Apodis Hospitality Group to invest in 20 Indian hotels, he said.

Mr Fernandes entered the airline business by mortgaging his home and digging into savings to buy then AirAsia for RM1 in 2001, assuming its debts and two ageing Boeing Co planes. He now has a net worth of US$470 million, according to Forbes magazine, and is also principal of the Lotus F1 Racing team.

From Business Times, "Tune Hotels may IPO in early 2013".

Ms Jiang Lai (Only date ACSi boys!) should be featured by Opposition!!

Indeed, Ms Jiang Lai (msjianglai.wordpress.com) should consider joining politics. Opposition Parties should have started to woo her to joining their ranks! She can be their answer to PAP's youngest (and much spoken about) candidate Ms Tin Pei Ling. At the very least, there's no online petition against Ms Jiang Lai yet.

So what's the great deal about this Ms Jiang Lai? She had created a buzz when her blog post was featured by STOMP in "Only date ACSi boys, says relief teacher. Chinese High and RI guys are 'ugly'".

Hard 'truth'? Well, let's not go into that discussion.

She for sure is entitled with her opinion.

For many anonymous out there (yours truly, inclusive), you need to learn the kind of 'dare' like that of hers. Just take a look at her 'Contact Me' page:

Are you an NBA scout?

Are you an incredibly rich handsome capable faithful guy who has fallen in love with me and doesn’t care that I’m in love with someone else?

Are you a visually and mentally challenged imbecile who hates me to the core and wants to challenge me to an argument on the Finer Points of Inner Beauty?

If the answer is yes, please contact me at

Featuring her handphone no. Fearless. A trait that any decent Opposition will need, no?

Yet another blogger has expressed the view that boys from Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) make great boyfriends.

This time, there is extra interest as the blogger herself is a relief teacher at a local primary school.

According to a netizen who stumbled upon her blog: "I came across this blog created by a relief teacher in Singapore."

"She compared boys from all-boys schools, and described boys from Chinese High and Raffles Institution as being 'ugly' and that St Andrews boys are 'imitated goods of ACS(I)'.

The netizen was appalled by her conclusion that only ACS(I) boys were 'worth dating'.

"She described ACS(I) boys as being 'rich, spoilt, pampered, arrogant players, but NEVER ugly, cowardly, disloyal, stupid, dumb', comparing the traits of ACS boys to those from other schools.

In an email to STOMP, the netizen says "This relief teacher he even has a checklist for people who hate her -- asking them if their PSLE score is above 260, or if they have been scouted by countless modelling agencies, among others.

"She may be smart, but why must she think so highly of herself?

"I think there will always be someone smarter than you, no matter how intelligent you think you are. But you'll never be wise until you've learnt about humility."

Partially quoted from Edvantage, "Only ACS boys worth dating, says teacher".

Lesson learnt from depositing adBrite cheque

Remember the joy when I received this adBrite cheque amount of US$103.76? Well, it's kinda short lived. I use DBS to get the money & alas, there are the following charges applicable:
- Commission S$10.00
- Postage S$4.00
- Agent Charges US$5.00 (= S$6.33)

Altogether I was deducted S$20.33. So with the cheque valued at $129.63, I easily lost almost 1/6 of the original amount. Heh. Bitter.

Wang Shiuan protested with the assist of bikini girls?!?!

Wang Shiuan asked fellow protectors to wear bikini to show that she has nothing to hide. What an irony! Considering she herself was not wearing bikini!! Just take a look at the photo above--from Asiaone--of her (wearing black) and the 8 bikini girls aka fellow protesters. So Wang Shiuan did have something to hide then...

A socialite led a number of young women dressed in bikini yesterday in holding a protest at the Hsinchu Science Park over a dog-walking dispute. Not often seen in public places, the bikini girls caused a stir in the science park and resulted in minor traffic jam as well as a car accident, according to local media reports yesterday.

The 40-year-old Wang Shiuan, daughter of Donald Wang, founder of the Micropore, Inc., together with several ladies in bikini, held banners to accuse the administration of suppression.

Wang, who lives in a rented apartment in the science park, said she had repeatedly received warnings from the administration, reminding her that pets are not allowed in the science park. "I am not the only one who is raising dogs in the science park," she said.

Wang claimed that the administration's action was unfair and apparently done to favor Pai Lien-pin, who also lives in the neighborhood.

Wang and Pai are currently engaged in a legal suit over a dog-walking dispute that happened last year.

Wang added that she asked fellow protectors to wear bikini to show that she has nothing to hide.

She urged the administration to stop intervening in the legal suit.

Pai, wife of ZyXEL's president, filed a suit against Wang last September after Pai's housekeeper was bitten by Wang's dog as the latter was walking it.

In retaliation, the 56-year-old Pai later used a walking stick to hit Wang's dog. She also assaulted Wang with the same stick after the latter came to stop her from attacking the animal.

Wang later filed a lawsuit against Pai. Pai's housekeeper subsequently sued Wang over the dog bite.

Life of Din ... or How I survived 9 days without food or water in a container accompanied by a dead co-worker

Reading about how 2 Bangladeshi men found in a container (one dead, one barely alive) at Singapore Pasir Panjang Port Terminal, the first book comes to my mind is "Life of Pi".

It's a story of survival. Of a sole survivor.

In this real life odyssey, the sole survivor after being trapped in a container after nine days (no thanks to smoking marijuana!) is Din Islam. His co-worker, Alamgir died after 7 days.

His is the only source of information of the ordeal. Nine days of surviving without water & food is just an incredible feat. Unlike in the book "Life of Pi", there was no animal involved, though.

Din Islam should consider writing a book about his experience. It will be very educational as a warning for workers not to smoke marijuana during working hours.

Two Bangladeshi port workers who slept off in a container at Chittagong port ended up in Singapore via Malaysia - having gone without food and water for nine days. One of them died, a media report said Friday.

Din Islam, 30, said he and co-worker Alamgir got trapped while resting in the container April 1. They had nothing but a pack of cigarettes between them.

Singapore police said Din Islam and the body of Alamgir were discovered last Sunday by workers at Pasir Panjong Container Terminal in Singapore after they heard loud banging in the container.

Authorities in Singapore are treating this as a genuine case.

Singapore police said they do not believe that foul play was involved. However, some people think the men could have got into the container with an intent to seek employment abroad.

Earlier, fortune-seekers took risky journeys from Cox's Bazar in southeastern Bangladesh to Malaysia, and many have died on the way, The Daily Star of Dhaka said.

The New Paper and the Straits Times of Singapore reported the incident.

The container was carried from Chittagong Port to Singapore by cargo ship Hansa Caledo, which sailed from Chittagong April 2.

The two men had completed their cleaning chores at Chittagong Port when they popped into the empty container to take a nap, Din Islam told Singapore police, reported The Straits Times Tuesday.

Din Islam said they shouted and banged on the walls of the container to attract attention before it was being shipped. But no help came.

"Then we just slept and we didn't know that the container had been picked up and transported onto the ship. By the time we woke up, we were probably already on the ship," Din told The New Paper.

He said his colleague, estimated to be 40 years old, collapsed and died after a few days in the container.

"I really didn't know what to do. I was very scared... I cried and I prayed to god for a miracle to happen. I prayed for my life," he added.

The Hansa Caledo made a five-day journey from Chittagong to Singapore.

After arrival in Singapore, the container was moved to the port's yard.

On Sunday, as the container was being moved to a trailer so it could be reloaded onto another ship bound for Vietnam, dock workers heard banging from inside.

When they opened the door, they found Din Islam with the decomposing corpse of his co-worker with no travel document.

Alamgir's corpse was taken to Singapore General Hospital, while police have handed over Din Islam to Transient Workers Count Too (TWC), a charity for migrants in Singapore.

He will be under TWC's care until he is fully fit to return home, said Bangladeshi A.K.M. Mohsin, who is the editor of Banglar Kantha, a Bangla newspaper published from Singapore.

"Details of the two men could not be known yet," Bangladesh High Commission First Secretary Zahid Hossain in Singapore told The Daily Star over the phone.

From NDTV, "Two shipped to Singapore, they fell asleep in container".

The two Bangladeshis, who were discovered in a cargo container shipped from Chittagong to Singapore, had smoked marijuana in the container before being locked in.

"For some time, we forgot that we were in a container," said port worker Din Islam, who was lucky to survive after being trapped in the container for nine days without food or water, but his colleague Alamgir died after seven days.

The container was on board a ship, Hansa Caledo, which left Chittagong Port on April 2.

After five days of journey the ship reached Singapore, and the container was left for another four days in Pasir Panjong Container Terminal, with Din Islam and the decomposing body of Alamgir inside.

Workers in that terminal discovered Din Islam and Alamgir's body on April 10, responding to Din's banging on the container wall when it was being reloaded onto a trailer for shipment to another Vietnam-bound ship.

Alamgir's body is now in Singapore General Hospital, while Din Islam, after treatment from Alexandra Hospital, is now under the care of Transient Workers Count Too, a charity for migrants in Singapore.

Din talked to The Daily Star over the phone with the help of local Bangladeshi journalist AKM Mohsin. Din hails from Biswa Colony of Kancha Bazar in Pahartali of Chittagong.

He and his friend Alamgir entered the container around 11:00pm with a pack of marijuana worth Tk 20 on April 1.

"We were smoking ganja, and could not remember where we were, but after sometime realised that the container we entered was locked," Din said.

None heard them when they shouted and hit the wall of the container with a small piece of rod after a few hours. They realised that they were on the ship, but could not understand that it was already sailing.

"When we realised that the ship was moving, we just prayed to Allah. We were yelling, but got tired," Din said, adding that they were able to breathe because some air was coming in through the cracks of the container's screw holes, but the air inside was dank and stale, and it was dark.

He said days of starvation emaciated them, and his friend breathed his last saying, "I'm gone,'' only two days before they were discovered by the terminal workers in Singapore.

"From then on, my suffering was acute. It was like fire inside the container. My breath was almost at the last," Din said adding, when he was in the Singapore port, he could hear people walking around. He banged on the container wall, but in vain.

"I was asking myself why Allah does not take me like my friend," he said.

Now he finds himself in a strange world, and he simply wants to return home, said AKM Mohsin.

The Singapore authorities, who were initially looking into possible charge of illegal entry, have not charged Din yet.

Din said he is now alright, but is worrying about his family. His wife Beauty left him and took their 18-month-old son with her to her parent's house at Mohammadpur in Laksam.

Some nights Din would not return home out of frustration, he said adding that he occasionally smokes marijuana but his friend Alamgir was a habitual smoker.

Din is illiterate and could not provide any mobile phone number of his relatives.

"I want to return home and meet my family," he pleaded.

Mohsin said Din has to go through some legal process in Singapore. First the authorities in Bangladesh have to identify his home address, then the Bangladesh high commission in Singapore has to issue a temporary passport for him. He will also need money for an air ticket. "It hasn't been decided yet who will manage the money," Mohsin said.

From the Daily Star, "Pot smoking was a factor".

FEW men, if any, have gone through the kind of hell he has suffered.

Trapped in a metal container without food and water for nine days.

Stuck with the decaying body of his dead friend for several of those days.

All the while not knowing where they were, where they were headed and when the door to the container would be opened.

And without any certainty of being saved.

Mr Din Islam, a 30-year-old Bangladeshi, has stared death in the face and come out of it alive.

He and his fellow countryman, whose name Mr Din gave as Mr Alamgir, who was about 40 years old, had not been smuggled into Singapore. Nor were they trying to enter the country illegally, he said.

"I didn't even know I was in Singapore," he told The New Paper in Bengali.

"We were not trying to come here to look for a job. It was just by chance that we went into the container and this happened."

Mr Din was found in a container with the decomposing body of Mr Alamgir at Pasir Panjang Terminal on Sunday night.

Yesterday, from his hospital bed, looking frail and thin, Mr Din spoke of his terrible ordeal for the first time.

Since he was trapped, he has not spoken to his wife, with whom he has a one-year-old child,

Mr Din, who works as a sweeper at the port at Chittagong - in south-eastern Bangladesh - had been working the night shift on April 1 with his colleague, now dead.

"We went for dinner and decided to go for a smoke. After that, we wanted to take a nap, so we just slipped into the container to sleep," he said.

They were in the middle of their 12-hour shift at that time.

Unaware

"Then we just slept and we didn't know that the container had been picked up and transported onto the ship. By the time we woke up, we were probably already on the ship," he said.

They tried to get out but the container, which was almost pitch-dark, was locked.

"So we looked around the container and shouted for help," he said.

But no help came.

"Nobody knew we were inside," he said.

The New Paper understands that the container left Chittagong on April 2 and arrived in Singapore four days later.

Except for a pack of cigarettes and the clothes on their back, they had nothing on them when they entered the container, Mr Din said.

There were no goods in the container. Nor was there anything they could live on.

"We had no food and water. We were very hungry and we had been shouting for help for two days," he said.

Fear, fatigue and the lack of nourishment took a heavy toll on them. Especially on Mr Din's friend.

Then the worst happened.

"He was weak and sick, and after what seemed like a few days, he suddenly collapsed and died," Mr Din said.

"I really didn't know what to do. I was very scared.

"I cried and I prayed to God for a miracle to happen. I prayed for my life."

His prayers were answered on the ninth day of his nightmare.

"When it felt like the container was being moved, I tried shouting for help again," recalled Mr Din.

"I managed to find a metal rod and a big magnet and I used them to hit the container walls."

Earlier media reports had described how a trailer driver had heard loud banging noises coming from the container when it was sitting on a berth at the terminal.

The driver was about to move the container onto a trailer so it could be reloaded onto a ship bound for Vietnam.

Alerted

Alarmed at the strange sounds, he alerted his employer and then called the police.

When the container was opened, the sight that greeted all who were present was an astonishing one.

In the container were a naked Mr Din, who had stripped off all his clothes due to the oppressive heat, and the slightly decomposing body of his dead colleague.

Mr Din was said to have been severely dehydrated.

Earlier reports described how the stench was so strong that port workers who were at the scene gave the container a wide berth.

Yesterday, a police spokesman said they received a call about the incident at about 8.30pm on Sunday.

"One man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at about 8.50pm," she said.

Mr Din, who was taken to Alexandra Hospital where he remains warded, is assisting police with investigations.

"Investigations indicate that both men are believed to be port workers from Bangladesh who were trapped inside the container by accident while they were taking a rest," added the spokesman.

Doctors told The New Paper that an average person can survive without food for as long as eight weeks but cannot do without water for too long.

An average person can go without water for between two and seven days. The length of time also depends on the individual's age, health, fitness level and the conditions he is found in.

For example, dehydration sets in faster and the person may have difficulty breathing in a place with higher temperature.

Severe dehydration means that the body does not have enough water to carry out its normal functions and this can cause kidney failure and even death.

But there have been previous accounts of miracles such as Mr Din's.

A 97-year-old Iranian grandmother spent eight days trapped - without a drop of water - under the rubble of an earthquake that levelled Bam in 1994 and lived to tell the tale.

"God kept me alive," she had said after being pulled out of the wreckage, reported Canadian news website, CTV News.

That, too, would likely have been Mr Din's exact thoughts.

From Asiaone, "'Nobody knew we were inside'".

Dr Oh Soon Hock 'cleared' of 4 molest charges?? Define 'cleared'!!

The 3 news articles use the word 'cleared' or 'withdrawn' concerning the 4 molestation charges against Dr Oh Soon Hock. (The 52-year-old Dr Oh had been accused of molesting a 21-year-old victim four times at the Mandai Lake Road premises between January and March 2009.)

What piques my curiosity is that "the charges were compounded for a sum of S$15,000 paid to the victim, which the prosecution did not object to."

In other words, the charges to be compounded for a global sum of $15,000.

And Dr Oh Soon Hock was then granted "a discharge amounting to an acquittal".

Now what the hell does that mean? That he's innocent? That the charges were false? If so, why the need to pay the money? And nowhere in the articles did it mention that the money was considered a fine. There must be a distinct difference between a 'fine' and this 'compounded moolah'.

What annoyed me too is upon reading this part of the article. "The woman, who has received the amount, was in court and seen wiping her tears."

She cried because she actually objected the case was settled this way? Well, it's possible. It will be nice if there is a further follow-up article with the victim being interviewed by the newspaper. Has she really moved on...empowered by a mere $15,000? Now no one knows.

A FORMER senior veterinarian with the Singapore Zoo was acquitted of four molestation charges on Friday after compounding the matter.

Dr Oh Soon Hock, 52, was granted a discharge amounting to an acquittal, for molesting a 21-year-old woman four times at the Mandai Lake Road premises between January and March 2009.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Agnes Chan said the prosecution had no objections for the charges to be compounded for a global sum of $15,000.

The woman, who has received the amount, was in court and seen wiping her tears.

Trained in Taiwan in veterinary science, Dr Oh was is known for using Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to treat animals. Lawyer Shashi Nathan told reporters that his client was very relieved that the matter had been resolved privately between the parties.

The maximum penalty for outrage of modesty is a jail term of up to two years, a fine or caning or any combination of such punishments.

From Straits Times, "Ex-Singapore zoo senior vet cleared of 4 molest charges".

All four molest charges against former Singapore Zoo vet Dr Oh Soon Hock were withdrawn Friday.

The 52-year-old had earlier been accused of molesting a 21-year-old victim four times at the Mandai Lake Road premises between January and March 2009.

The charges were compounded for a sum of S$15,000 paid to the victim, which the prosecution did not object to.

Dr Oh's lawyer said the vet is relieved the whole experience is over and wants to move on.

He added that Dr Oh, who is known for using Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat animals, misses his work at the Zoo and hopes for a chance to return to work with animals.

From Channel NewsAsia, "Molest charges against former Zoo vet withdrawn".

All four molestation charges against former Singapore Zoo veterinarian Oh Soon Hock were withdrawn on Friday, after the charges were compounded for a sum of S$15,000.

The 52-year-old had been accused previously of molesting a 21-year-old victim four times at the Mandai Lake Road attraction between January and March 2009. He has since paid the compounded sum to the victim and the prosecution did not object.

Dr Oh's lawyer said the vet is relieved that the whole ordeal is over and wants to move on.

He added that his client, who is known for using Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat animals, misses his work at the zoo and hopes for a chance to return to work with animals.

From Today, "Molestation charges against vet withdrawn".

UNIVERSAL Studios Singapore (USS) will celebrate its Grand Opening with a bang on Saturday, May 28, with Hollywood and Asian celebrities scheduled to make appearances at South-east Asia's No.1 theme park.

The launch will kick off with a movie-themed Grand Opening ceremony at the signature 21m tall arch entrance of Universal Studios Singapore. The action and entertainment opportunities for USS guests continue to grow with the soon-to-be-announced premiere of the world's first Madagascar-themed ride, Madagascar: A Crate Adventure. Yet another blockbuster ride is scheduled for later this year, the much-anticipated Transformers attraction, based on the popular box-office-hit movie series.

The ride was stopped after a failure in one of its seats during routine checks a few weeks after its soft opening in March last year.

The theme park has already welcomed more than two million guests since then.

Guests can also look forward to two new movie-themed rides in the future, based on the animated film Madagascar and box-office hit movie Transformers.

The grand opening will also showcase some of the park's biggest resident stars.

The real 'chicken rice war'...but without chicken rice

The saga involves 'noodles'. The family terrorised due to the customer 'taking an extra portion of anchovies'. Well, if this deadly 'source-of-quarrel' ingredient wasn't meant to be taken, surely the container must not be placed outside the hawker stall, right?

Dangerous thinking. Especially if this act was combined with taking photos of the food from the stall? I can understand the outrage of the stall owner, it's a provocation...somewhat. The clever thing is for him to take the photo of the customer also, but please get real...do you really expect stall owners equip themselves with a camera to document (and later on send to STOMP) of their encounter with greedy, ugly customers?!?!

A Singaporean family was assaulted by a hawker couple at Food Loft along Clementi Ave 3 yesterday.

STOMP contributor Julia recalled that she had taken an extra portion of anchovies from a container placed outside the hawker stall after paying for her noodles, when the female stall holder, who according to Julia was from China, raised her voice and said, "You Singaporeans who are paying so little money want to have so much of everything".

After raising her voice at Julia, the female store holder continued to mumble and complain to passers-by about the same matter and also complained to her husband. Her husband then attacked Julia's family of three, causing them to run away in defence.

The male stall holder did not stop his pursuit even after the family got into their car, and continued to kick and bang on the car. The woman stood in front of Julia's car to prevent them from driving away, allowing her husband to continue abusing the car from behind.

Julia had sustained injuries on her back and head after falling while trying to stop her husband from retaliating during the attack. Both her husband's eyes were swollen and her son also suffered a bruised eye. The family sought treatment at Singapore General Hospital and chalked up $180 in medical bills. They also made a police report on the same night.

Julia's husband later revealed that they had decided to take photos of the food from the stall as they had wanted to make a report to National Environment Agency as the food did not seem clean. The male hawker left his stall and shouted at him, demanding to know why he was taking pictures, and started to assault Julia's husband.

Julia's husband went to ask the female hawker why she made such a big fuss out of an extra portion of anchovies. He held up the plastic container of anchovies while asking her, and female stall holder slammed the container onto the table, sparking off the assault.

The couple then started to punch Julia's family, and her 14 year-old son got hurt while trying to defend his father. The male hawker also hit Julia's husband's head with an object.

Julia's husband could not retaliate because Julia and the coffeeshop owner had prevented him from doing so.

The coffeeshop owner later revealed that the hawker couple they encountered were known for their bad temper.

When AsiaOne checked with the police, we were told that a report has been lodged against the hawkers and that they have classified it as mischief and voluntarily causing hurt. The police are currently looking into the matter.

Catholic church leaders: "I'm lovin' it...Not!"

Aww...I personally find the McDonald's ad endearing. Check out this clip, "McDonalds Commercial Philippines" & see if you disagree. You may not understand Tagalog, but the children's body language is simply universal. Haha.

US FAST-FOOD chain McDonald's said on Wednesday it had scrapped a television commercial in the devoutly Catholic Philippines after facing a barrage of criticism from church leaders.

'We recognise and respect the stand of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and have stopped airing the said commercial across all television stations,' McDonald's said in a statement.

In the commercial, a girl who looks to be only five or six years old asks a boy of the same age if she can be his girlfriend. The boy curtly rejects her, complaining that girlfriends are too demanding.

But after the girl says all she wants are some french fries from McDonald's, the boy's face lights up and the commercial finishes with the pair walking side by side, almost holding hands.

Catholic church leaders had called for the commercial to be pulled, complaining it sent the wrong message to children.

Bishop Deogracias Yniguez, a senior member of the Catholic Bishops Conference, said concerns had centred on having very young children doing such an adult-themed commercial.

From Straits Times, "McDonald's pulls Philippine ad amid church anger".

Chopsticks and a tragedy of two lovers...

First of all, let's not blame the chopsticks. Just because the boy (Tan Teck Soon) did not bring her girlfriend (Chong Kar Yin) a pair of chopsticks, he eventually--much later on, albeit in the same night--pushed her to her death and then jumped himself to test the irresistible gravity himself. Gravity rejected him. He survived. And that is what I'd call a tragedy!!

They had been going steady for less than half a year when tragedy struck.

It all started with a tiff over a pair of chopsticks, but then 19-year-old Tan Teck Soon thought girlfriend Chong Kar Yin wanted to break up with him.

Agitated, he pushed her off 12 storeys and then jumped down to follow her in death. Although seriously injured, he survived the plunge and was originally charged with her murder.

However, in court earlier today, Tan escaped the gallows after the charge was amended to culpable homicide, reported Shin Min Daily News and Lianhe Wanbao. Both Malaysians worked in Singapore.

What happened]
Details revealed in court mentioned that the tragedy happened on March 7 in 2009 at 1.53 am along the 12th-storey corridor of Block 565 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3.

Tan, a welder, met then 20-year-old Chong through a friend, Cai Weilun. After a month's acquaintance, the couple went steady.

On the evening of the tragedy, the couple met at a Bedok hawker centre at about 11.30pm. Ms Chong ordered a bowl of fishballs and asked her boyfriend to bring her a pair of chopsticks. Tan, however, refused to help her and Ms Chong was unhappy.

They had a tiff over this and ignored each other. However, they made up later when Tan fed Ms Chong the fishballs and she got over her anger.

During the meal, Ms Chong was constantly on her mobile talking and texting, which irritated Tan.

They left soon after and Tan took Ms Chong home on his motorcycle.

After they parked at the carpark of Block 565 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3, the couple's chat degenerated into a quarrel when they started to talk about the incident at the Bedok hawker centre.

Ms Chong evetually suggested they go upstairs to resolve the unhappiness and they continued quarrelling when they reached the 12th storey corridor.

It was then that Ms Chong told Tan that they would never be able to change their quick temper.

Tan, however, though Ms Chong wanted to break up and decided to die with Ms Chong. He used both hands and pushed Ms Chong until she toppled over the wall and fell to her death.

Then Tan took a few steps back and rushed towards the wall and fell over it to plunge down the flat.

However, the flat was undergoing some upgrading and his fall was broken by the scaffolding. Although he landed near Ms Chong, he survived.

Creatures comforts - Being a bird

Creatures comforts - Being a bird. Great clip! Heh. "Bird's stay in the air by magic". LOL.

The murderer of Agnes Kharisma is ... her MOTHER?!?!

The murder of Agnes Kharisma is solved. The killer is her own mother, Milly Patti. The motive? The victim apparently treated her badly. So much for the Indonesian saying, "Cinta ibu sepanjang jalan; cinta anak sepanjang gala". (In English, it can be taken as "a mother's love is timeless, her kid's love is...NOT".

Police investigators working on the gruesome murder of a 19-year-old teenager on Saturday re-enacted how the suspects — the victim's mother, stepbrother and a friend — dumped her body.

The body of 19-year-old Agnes Kharisma was found in a gutter in Jagakasara, South Jakarta, on Feb. 13. At first, the police focused their investigations on Agnes’s foreign boyfriends, but their suspicion later shifted to the victim’s mother, Milly Patti.

Saturday's re-enactment was conducted at the murder scene, Agnes's rented house at Jalan Sirsak, Jagakarsa.

Milly was escorted by the police along with the two other suspects, her stepson Sonny and his friend Warto. Police say Milly has confessed to paying her stepson and his friend Rp 2 million ($230) to take part in the murder.

Milly smiled to crowd upon arriving at the scene.

“How could you smile? You're heartless!” one of the spectators shouted.

The re-enactment also showed that Milly and her stepson transported Agnes's body using the victim's own motorbike to dispose her body in a nearby gutter. The location was picked because the gutter was covered by tall grass and the street itself is relatively quiet.

Police believe Agnes was strangled and bludgeoned to death on Feb. 7 at her home, before her body was dumped three days later. Her body was found semi-naked with marks around her neck on Feb. 13.

Police said Milly has confessed that she organized the murder because she had been treated badly by her daughter.

“She admitted that she was kicked out of Agnes’ house and she was upset at being treated like that by her own daughter,” South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Gatot Eddy Pramono said.

Agnes's friend and neighbor, Iin, said that a week before she was murdered, Agnes had a fight with her mother.

"It was very loud and the neighbors could hear them shouting. It was not the first fight she had with her mother but they would usually resolve it and it's usually about minor things," Iin said, as quoted by news portal Detik.com.

From Jakarta Globe, "Re-enactment Shows How Mother Dumped Daughter's Body".

Jakarta Police Psychology Division head Arif Nurchayo said his side found that MT, who allegedly arranged the murder of her own daughter, 19-year-old Agnes Kharisma, was mentally healthy.

“MT showed no indication of a mental problem during our examination yesterday,” Arif said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

He said MT killed her daughter not for economic reasons, “but there is a deeper reason that we will investigate further”.

Agnes’ body was found in a South Jakarta gutter in early February. An autopsy revealed that Agnes had been strangled three days before her body was found.

MT was arrested with two other men who allegedly acted as executors for the premeditated murder.

From Jakarta Post, "Murder suspect mentally healthy: Police".

South Jakarta Police say they believe they have solved the mystery of who murdered attractive teenager Agnes Kharisma — the victim’s own mother.

In the early stages of the investigation, police announced they were wanting to speak to three people of interest, including two foreign boyfriends.

On Wednesday, however, South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Gatot Eddy Pramono said Agnes’ mother, identified only as ‘M,’ her stepson, 27, and his friend, 31, had been arrested.

“Her testimony kept changing. In the end, she confessed that she killed [Agnes],” Gatot said.

He said M told police that she had been treated badly by her daughter and murdered her.

“She admitted that she was kicked out of Agnes’ house and she was upset at being treated like that by her own daughter.”

Agnes was found dead and semi-naked in a gutter on Jalan Joe in Jagakarsa on Feb. 13. She had marks around her neck.

Gatot said the accused had admitted to undressing the victim to make it appear that she had been raped.

The mother, M, allegedly paid her stepson and his friend Rp 2 million to take part in the murder.
